Students in a Virginia school district will soon be allowed to take a day off in order to participate in protests in a novel new policy. The school board of Fairfax County has confirmed it will formerly allow the children to skip a day of class in order to exercise their civil rights. It comes amid a wave of student activism across the country which has seen thousands of young people take to the streets to call for change, from stricter gun laws to action on climate change. (Photo) At 188,000 students, Fairfax County Public Schools is one of the country's biggest school districts and the largest in Virginia.

How about a day off to do something constructive, like volunteering in a soup kitchen.

It is a good thing. The children learn about the first amendment. They should be given a day off to practice the 2nd amendment too.

If you are under the legal voting age. are unemployed, are living in someone's home for free, other than the rights given to you by caretaker(s), you HAVE only one civil right. That is your right to a free education courtesy of the state of residence. So sit your butt down in the school room and pretend to learn something.

What could go wrong? Who is the arbiter of worthy civil rights protests. I want to skip school to protest the age limit on smoking and drinking. I want to skip school to protest the ratings on movies and video games. I want to protest to make public nudity and copulation legal. Aren't these worthy causes?

Let them protest during the summer, on their own time.

admirable, but, what happens if the child or children are hurt or killed or beaten - who is responsible then - the school for letting them go to a protest or the parent? Most demonstrations are civil, some are not, especially, if antifa is present - has anyone thought this through - or is it just a "feel good" movement.

We should own this opportunity. Republican/conservative families should encourage their children to help get out the vote next year.

I can imagine my parents‘ reactions had I informed them of my intent to ‘protest’ anything, much less take off a day from school (parochial, which my parents paid for!). Ha! Yeah, that would have been a laugh riot!

OK, deduct a day's pay from "teachers" and staff. Seems only fair.

How about a day off to actually learn something. Cause they certainly aren't learning much IN school.

Odds are the Fascist Pigs who run the Fairfax School system will not tolerate any student demonstrating on behalf of Christianity, Pro-Life, Free Speech, Republican party, Donald Trump, or Constitutional Carry.
This is just another way to get attention for the favorite projects or objectives of Leftwing Lunatics!

The question is does the school district still get paid the daily money from the feds for their generosity?

When I was a HS senior, I took advantage of senior skip day. My parents found out and were not amused, to put it mildly. IIRC, I was grounded for the final two weeks of school until my graduation day. At 17 years of age. My parents didn't cotton to farting away a good education.

My ancestors are rolling in their graves. In reading journals about early life in VA, everyone, including black children, were required to not only attend school, but church. PC has ruined this country. Who knew VA would be right there with liberal carpetbaggers.

Something tells me this being one of the nation's biggest school districts isn't because parents are choosing to get their kids educated there.
