Heavy fog and an ice-slickened highway contributed to a massive pre-Christmas 69-vehicle pileup in eastern Virginia on Sunday that left more than 50 people injured, two in critical condition, authorities said.
The chain-reaction crash happened just before 8 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 near Williamsburg, Virginia, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said during a news conference Sunday afternoon.
"We do not know the cause of the initial accident, but we do know that fog and the icy road conditions were causative factors in this multi-vehicle crash," Anaya said.

The dramatic presentation by abc news makes it sound like all those independent events are somehow related. I kept waiting for them to tie it all to Trump, somehow. Especially the high-rise ice in NYC.

The cause of the initial accident, speaking as a long time police officer, is usually a stupid move by a stupid driver...

Re #2.
Ice, fog, and clueless drivers that don't adjust their driving accordingly. Slow down!

As a million mile driver I have to agree with #2. I do note the further east I traveled the shorter the following distances became. Weather was never a factor in choice. Out west the diminished, but nothing like the east coast.

Anxiously awaiting Greta's pronouncement that this accident was caused by Climate Change.

As usual, anything that causes someone to slow down, or stop, causes a chain reaction for a simple reason: People follow too closely! If the car in front of you had to slam on brakes for some reason, could you stop? Weather doesn't seem to matter to a lot of drivers, they don't make allowances for wet or icy roads.
Not only that, but tailgating has become a for of bullying. Tailgating to try forcing someone to speed up or get out of the way causes many accidents.

Virginia spends so much money on paying the five different layers of traffic cops that they apparently didn't have enough left over to salt a road. This is a busy Interstate and you can rest assured that the radar was set up every few miles.

I've driven this highway many times. The speed limit is 70, but the highway looks like it was built for speeds of around 50 to 55.

Now wait for the communist Governor to demand massive Federal funds to prevent weather from ever again causing a pile-up. The magic elixir for all problems is taxpayer money.

#7 is correct about bullying tailgaters. Just last week a car going about 70 was in the process of passing me. Another car came up behind him doing at least 90 or more riding his bumper very aggressively until the driver passing me turned into the right hand lane in front of me. In order to avoid getting hit he had to get back into my lane so quickly that I nearly hit him myself. That bully very nearly caused an accident but I doubt he even gave it a thought. It was more important to shave a few minutes off his trip, I guess.

Too many drivers are clueless. They have no idea what hydroplaning is, what ice on pavement will do or much distance it takes to come to a stop from 70 miles an hour. I raced sports cars for 8 years and felt safer at 120 miles per hour on a racetrack than I do on a modern interstate at 70.

The snow melts and during the night freezes over. People should know to drive slower and keep a distance. Years ago when you got a ticket and had to go to a class, FHP were the instructors. I will never forget the officer who said "Most accidents are caused by greed" I wish I knew his name.

Fog, ice & following toooo close. The old rule of one car length per 10mph went out the window years ago with the invention of air bags, disc brakes & stupid behavior. Now the aggressive drivers are on your bumper as soon s pull out of your drive way.
