Parents were shocked when they obtained a video from their son's Illinois school showing him detained inside a window-less, cell-like 'seclusion room' used for timeouts. Staley Sandy-Ester is seen in the April 30 footage at the Gages Lake School, a therapeutic, public school in Lake County. The video triggered a massive state investigation into the controversial practice. The boy appears upset and is prevented from leaving the room by a female school aide. When Staley, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, kicks the woman,

Ok. So what should schools be expected to do with unruly, violent or disruptive students? The parents drop them off every morning and go about their day. If the school complains about their child the parents are outraged. Yet they do not offer a solution. The taxpayer funded schools are expected to just deal with it. Anybody have a better idea?

Sorry folks, in many cases a kid needs secluded like this because he may hurt another child, or an adult. And if you scoff at this notion, you need to volunteer at an elementary school.

This appears to be a school for kids that cant function in regular schools. There is video surveillance in the room and a live person at the open door. They are in no danger. It says the kids sometimes scratch at walls, poop on the floor and other unpleasant things. What is a school supposed to do? Pat them on the head and say "nice Johnny?"

Happened to my daughter. I was talked out of withdrawing my daughter by family members. I also remember the principal of her elementary school berating mothers for driving their children to school instead of taking the bus when Id heard several reports of children getting left on the bus or being attacked on the bus.
I hate public schools.

This kid just needs a Good Spanking for showing aggression against the teachers. Next time, just call the parents to pick up their spoiled kid and let them deal with their brat.

The demonrat teacher union is just showing the country what they would do to people they don't like or can't use mind control on once they control everything again.

This isn't shocking to me. Kids with real ADHD have some real problems, especially with over-stimulation. A windowless room can help.
That said, the attitude of those monitoring him is critical. The intent is not to frighten but calm and reassure . There is more to this story than the knee-jerk reaction they're trying for.

The teacher's hands are tied. One disruptive child ruins the whole day for a classroom of kids. The teacher has to have a solution to the problem and isolation sounds like a good one. As a last resort, the child should be banned from the school. Homeschool your little terrorist.

Public schools have taken on doing too much in schools to control children and parents to build a socialist society. Some places have schools now that serve only four and five year olds. Why is that? Most people are not aware that parents are putting their three-year-old babies in a school setting! I was reluctant to let mine start kindergarten at age five, and they only had to attend half day. When I was growing up, we went to kindergarten in the summer to prepare us for first grade. And, my parents insisted that we learn how to read before we started school. They said we would not "embarrass them, not knowing how to read." Now we have high percentages of fifth graders, eighth graders, high school seniors who can barely read. What a shame!

It sounds like the room is designed to lower the outside stimulation that triggers the kids who have this condition. I applaud the schools for at least trying something other than abandoning the student. I have known parents who have kids with this problem of over stimulation, and it is not easy to deal with without resorting to physical restraint. Maybe the parents of the other students should think about what the lad is going through instead of being triggered by a kid in a room designed to help lower his anxiety levels. People who have no clue can usually wind up causing more damage to kids by interfering rather than going knee jerk.
Don't get me wrong, I am not for abusing that room by over using it. But if the child is causing serious problems in the classroom, amybe they need a time out to cool down.

So it isn't just Trump that reporters lie about. As usual, the video evidence completely undermines the story line they're trying to peddle The only shocking thing in the video is the statement that the aide later committed suicide. I hope the reaction to this incident didn't drive her to it. It's a tough world for people who don't have a hard shell.
