Longtime NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw came on CBS’s The Late Show Monday to talk about his new Watergate book and compare the impeachment inquiry of Richard Nixon to the current impeachment of President Trump. While he was there, he also boasted how journalists in his day could be counted on to report accurately; but today, people got their news from social media which couldn’t be trusted. While comparing his time covering Watergate to the current impeachment proceedings, Brokaw told host Stephen Colbert how journalists used to be considered trustworthy, because they had plenty of time to do their own sourcing and could control what was reported:

"Journalists" did it to themselves when they threw their lot in with the most extreme elements of the Democrat party.

Nope. Social media exposed the bias and corruption of mainstream journalists, Tom.

Wrong. MSM reported false and misleading news, in many cases giving opinion as fact.
Social media was the only way of learning what really happened.
5 Pinocchios for him!

No, Brokaw, in your day you and Cronkite, among other anchors, lied on the nightly news and there was no one to call you on it. Now we have talk radio and some of the social media to hold networks accountable for reporting, and they STILL lie.

I am thankful for the Internet. We can see and hear what they say and how they say it. And have a copy to throw back at them when they say " I never said that". You guys are busted. And NOT trusted.

When media consisted of a few TV networks and a single hometown newspaper, the "journalists" were the ONLY source of the news and they created the "truth" and were trusted by their viewers and/or readers.
The internet provided the people an opportunity to be exposed to information that enjoyed a much more diverse set of information without being filtered by the established media "journalists." Remember that the established media refused to report on Bill Clinton's behavior until the Drudge Report provided valid information and the established media was then forced to follow suit.
Social media is a mostly unfiltered source which places a bigger burden on readers to exercise some critical thinking skills (which many people lack) before accepting the information and forming their own beliefs.
If "journalists" wish to regain the trust they lost, they need to do some honest introspection and change their behavior by providing OBJECTIVE reporting of FACT-BASED information so readers/viewers can decide what they believe after being exposed to ALL sides of an issue.
If course there is a place for OPINION articles or programs but they must be separate from NEWS articles or programs.

One could fill a set of encyclopedias with all the false stories propagated by the media. My favorite is 'Donald Trump has no path to 270' Not until his electoral count topped 300 did they admit he won.

Social media correctly changed all of that by proving that the vast majority of so called "journalists" are just leftist propaganda artists.

For me, the penny dropped back in the 80's. It was just the simple thing of seeing in a glossy magazine, Vanity Fair or Town & Country, news anchors yucking it up in Martha's Vineyard with people they report on.

No, journalists ruined that. Social media only pointed out how dishonest journalists were.
I've distrusted journalists for about 55 years, when I had a series of 'trusted newsmen' lie through their teeth and try to harm my father, lie about the vietnam war, and lie about elections... Actually, I rarely DIDN'T find journalists lying, when it would serve the agendas of their owners.
We just didnt have social media then to spread the word.

Back then there were only three TV media peas in the pod without anyone to show they they were actually politicized talking heads, who falsely professed to be experts in every field imaginable. But for the last three years President Trump has successfully blown those media talking heads clear out of their saddles by way of his continuous “fake news” announcements.

The internet allows direct access to source information and for unfiltered sources, he means.
Journalist have always been lying scum.
We just know what I first believed when Walter Cronkite took off his glasses and lied about Vietnam.

No, you all did it to yourselves. Lying daily/nightly to the nation since the Vietnam war. You got away with that stuff because there was no internet to double check your newscasts. Don't be blaming social media for exposing your lies and lack of clothing, ummkay? Stop backing the democrats and start being the nation's watchdog again. Trust and respect are earned, not just given. Especially not to your profession.

Utter nonsense. I am now 70. It was when I was around 20 that I began to see what a stinking pile was the "Evening News". It was my increasing skepticism that caused me to drift to more and more conservative views from my "educated" (ie politically correct ) view of the world as a product of the public school system.

I used to yell at the nightly news and think I was crazy. Rush, the Internet and Lucianne saved my sanity! Tom just misses the stranglehold they used to have on information.

Saying the public used to trust the mainstream media isn't actually a glowing assertion. Trusted and being trustworthy are two different things. They were trusted because America couldnt even begin to believe they were being lied to.

No Tom, it is leftist so-called journalists, like you that spread Democrat propaganda. I hate to break the news to you Tom but the media in this country cannot, and will not be trusted by anyone with an IQ higher than a box of rocks.
