Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a myth, according to an expert who said that social conditioning in Western society makes women falsely attribute their emotions to their hormones. Speaking on the Clue Hormonal podcast, Jane Usher, a professor of women’s health psychology at Western Sydney University, said that women from other cultures do not report many emotional signs of PMS. She said that a long-standing 'pathologising discourse'—dating back to the 20th century—is the reason many women believe they're having symptoms.(Snip) She explained that PMS first entered discourse in North America in 1931, when women were diagnosed with 'hysteria',

If I knew a stranger would randomly appear on my doorstep each month and kick me in the crotch, I would be increasingly angry/miserable in the preceding days or weeks. Now, multiply that by 100 and you have a small glimpse into how the fairer sex might feel.

How many read the Daily Mail? It is a tabloid in the UK, devoted to clickbait headlines, lots of photos, and the Kardashians… Why it shows up so much here is beyond me.

This is gospel...until the next expert shows up and decides PMS is the cause of all human suffering.
Welcome to science, where nothing is settled and truth is as fluid as whatever is stylish this week.

PMS is related to changes in hormone levels. It is a medical issue, not a psychological one.

I looked her up on her bio from the University:
She has received research funding from the ESRC & NHS (UK), ARC, PCFA, NSW Cancer Council, NBCF, CanTeen, and Family Planning NSW, amongst others. Her current funded projects include an ARC Linkage project on LGBTIQ+ experiences of cancer; an ANROWS funded project on sexual violence and transgender women; sexual health of migrant and refugee women; and and ANROWS funded project on nthe impact of complex sexual abuse on women.
Of course prior to looking her up, I thought this is her way of saying that transgender men, really can be women because REAL women don't really have PMS. I say BS on that. I know that occasionally, in conjunction with my period, I was bat-s=it crazy, and normally and most of the time I'm not. It was worse in my 20-30's.

One time I tried to describe my symptoms of PMS. One of the things I told my Dr. was that my brain felt too large for my head. He, of course...he, looked a little startled. Then recently I read an article that talked about brain swelling during PMS. Wow. Who knew??? I think I did. But too late now; I've long passed through that state of my life. About 35-40 and didn't get a lot of relief from the the GYN Drs of the time.

In response to #3:
The reason The Daily Mail shows up so much in this forum is that they are the only ones who always have a really good spread of Melania's outfits.
And for that reason alone they are worth it. It's not as if she's been given any Vogue covers, like Mrs. Wookie.
The mainstream press doesn't want anyone to find out she is poised, elegant and beautiful - they don't want to concede any such thing to the Republicans.

So, if PMS is real and it really does make women unable to control their emotions at certain times of the month shouldn't women not be allowed to operate heavy equipment or supervise small children? PMS has been used as an excuse for truly horrible behavior by women for as long as I can remember. It's a free pass to not act like an adult. Feminists supposedly want equality, but still want to be unaccountable for their behavior. Note that if a man is in pain he does have the right to take out his frustration on the people around, but somehow women do.
No one deserves equal rights if they won't accept equal responsibilities.

I tend to agree with Usher. My lady love generally has PMS, M, PMS. Pre menstrual syndrome, M, and post menstrual syndrome. The latter's duration runs up and nudges for former. Kind of like if everything's racist, nothing's racist.

I have PRS (Post Retirement Syndrome), and I am cranky, refuse to listen to progressives and have a carry permit to protect myself (and annoy progressives and Michael Bloomberg) from those who would do me harm. Do I have a mental problem or just a reasoned way to look at today's world?

Men suffer from hormonal changes too. Instead of becoming mean and angry, they buy sports cars, boats and motorcycles! It's all in how a person responds to the hormone changes. Women have been conditioned to believe they must become harridans, shrews, and horrible company for other people. ''It's not their fault...'' I do know that women suffer hot flashes, but beyond that...

I once bragged that I never had PMS and my husband said “Not cyclically, that is.” He got a little smack for that.

No opinion on the topic. The love of my life was relatively level headed all the time, as far as I could tell. And that is one reason she is the love of my life.

My wife tells me that PMS is a woman's excuse to act for one week a month the way a man acts 24/7. :) When I read the article to her, she flipped off the "expert".

Most women who are arrested have onset of their period during the first night of arrest. Of course it's a coincidence.

Anger is a choice, like any emotion. Pain and suffering can make the choice more tempting, requiring additional effort to make a different choice. Other cultures don't indulge angry women as readily as America.

Maybe the reason PMS seems a peculiar affliction of the West is that we are culturally conditioned not to beat it into submission any more. Men were once obliged to keep their women in line and well-mannered, with use of force if necessary. Now even a harsh word could bring legal action. While Muslim cultures still broadly endorse (even mandate in some cases) forcing women to submit to male authority.

This might be the cruelest trick yet of The Patriarchy, doing all it can to keep women angry. The author of the study notes that women in healthy relationships are less likely to report such symptoms. Good thing she's a woman or angry women would have her tarred and feathered for multilevel heresy.
