A record-breaking veteran climber fell 600-feet to his death off a steep Mexico mountain after failing to tie a knot in his rappel rope. Brad Gobright, 31, had been rappelling down El Sendero Luminoso at El Potrero Chico on Wednesday with climbing partner Aiden Jacobson, 26. Gobright and Jacobson met each other for the first time on the day of the climb. The night before, the veteran climber had posted to Instagram asking whether anyone wanted to join him. Jacobson, from Phoenix, answered the post, and the pair met up the next morning. The pair used a 260ft rope

I climbed mountains for about 6 or 7 years. I never thought that free climbing was sane, never did it, always roped. However, these guys had a rappel point pop on them....that is just an error in setting the rappel point up, most likely, not properly secured seems to be the root cause. Some of these guys are truly amazing on the rocks, neat to watch, but climbing is a dangerous sport. RIP climber. Off belay.

Sadly, one can still make mistakes regardless of skill and experience, and rock climbing provides little leeway. Too bad.

Not a climber, but rode various bikes for many years. You get comfortable with tools and ways of using them, to the point where you can overlook fundamentals. Focus on the wrong things or the next thing instead of the last thing and all of a sudden it is all out of control. A shame to die for a small oversight, but life does that. We are often inches and a second away from a sudden ending.

#5 and #7, hard to add to it. I rode bikes - hard, in NYC - for a long time. I stopped because I was getting too comfortable with things that would come back at me during the week when I thought about them and started worrying that I was in a comfort zone that didn't justify comfort. Just what these guys were doing even had they tied the knots at the end of the ropes - obviously they enjoy risk, and the risk came to pass. I feel badly about that. There is still a lot of joy in that kind of thrill.

This is why pilots have a written checklist for their standard procedures - and must memorize emergency procedures. People can get careless doing the same thing over and over.

Rock climbing, especially the vertical kind requiring great technical skill and courage risks blunt force trauma. Like certain types of water, air, and land motor racing, rock climbing is inherently dangerous, one major reason for the attraction. Every time you get all the way up and back down safely, you've cheated death again, until .... FTA: "In October 2017 he set a speed record for ascending the Nose route of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, one of the world's most technical and dangerous verticals. Gobright and climbing partner Jim Reynolds raced up the nearly 90-degree, 2,900-foot precipice in just two hours and 19 minutes (emphasis added). The pair, from California, broke the previous record set in 2012 by four minutes. That record was set by Alex Honnold - the only person to free solo El Capitan." Totally amazing achievements. Many of us acrophobic lovers of mountainscapes admire those who conquer their fear of heights, something we'll never do, preferring to watch NatGeo's shows on mountaineering. (Heck, I got a bit antsy in 2017 when the commercial 737 between Tampa and Music City climbed to an announced 41,000 feet, pretty close to that jet's ceiling. I looked down and my stomach turned half a knot. Oooh, that's a loooooong way to earth.) Free solo, incidentally, means no pitons, no ropes, no net, no nothing. Just the climber, unaided, the rock face, and a lot of empty air below. Gonadinal and mentulate for certain. Rest in peace, Brad.

The article I read implied they forgot to tie a knot. Now a life is gone. Never understood the thrill-seeking types. Those Wallendas would walk tightropes between skyscrapers without a safety rope or net (no use at several hundred feet up). I believe later on, they did use some safety devices, after the father fell.

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday launched his “No Malarkey” bus tour in Iowa, part of a bid to regain momentum among the state’s voters ahead of the nation’s first presidential caucuses. The frontrunner’s eight-day bus tour is part of an effort to sharpen his pitch before the Feb. 3 caucuses as polls have shown Biden slipping in the first-in-the-nation state. The tour will cover 18 counties and is a play on one of Biden’s most well-known phrases. Perhaps most notably it was used in his 2012 vice-presidential debate with then GOP VP hopeful Paul Ryan, when he told his rival that his criticism of the Obama administration’s foreign policy

And that market has grown more than 4 percent between 2014 and 2019, according to IBISWorld analysts. Chains like Pizza Hut have been revamping older sitdown restaurants in favor of smaller, faster delivery- and takeout–oriented locations. With all that money on the line, it’s not hard to see why convenience-focused chains would want to have many locations available to their customers.Every year, QSR Magazine looks at how many locations each fast-food brand has

Justice Clarence Thomas remains a controversial figure. H was confirmed with one of the slimmest margins in history, whose confirmation battle devolved into a nasty fight when Anita Hill lobbed sexual misconduct allegations at him. Justice Brett Kavanaugh would face the same dirty Democratic tricks. The GOP blessedly held firm for this eminently qualified man who was the subject to the nastiest character assassination attempt since Thomas. Kavanaugh’s confirmation was extra sweet in that Republicans had long last avenged the failed nomination of Robert Bork. And in today’s politics, no matter what the Democrats say, your default position should be to be against it.
