A recent article in the Associated Press is now getting roundly mocked for featuring an etiquette expert who suggested that people hosting Thanksgiving provide an actual safe space for people to discuss the current political issues. The article by Dan Sewell, titled “On the Thanksgiving menu: Turkey, with a side of impeachment,” argued that politics are just too polarizing in today’s America and will surely be a topic around the dinner table come Thursday’s holiday. Rather than skirt the issue, Sewell suggests people should discuss politics both openly and safely. After quoting several individuals who fear how politics could cloud the day, Sewell employed Elaine Swann, “a Los Angeles-based etiquette coach,”

I would prefer to enjoy the day than discuss politics resulting in some strained emotions and potentially hurt feelings. Thanksgiving is like church for me. Leave the politics at the door. Enjoy the time with your family and friends. You won't have family members and friends forever this side of eternity.
That said, it can be hard to hold one's tongue when someone is foisting their views in your face. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem . . . and your Thanksgiving gathering!

What the hey!!! - the host is supposed to muzzle them and only allow a discussion in a separate room - according to the 'etiquette' coach! No free speech ! FTA: After quoting several individuals who fear how politics could cloud the day, Sewell employed Elaine Swann, “a Los Angeles-based etiquette coach,” who argued that hosts should sequester the debates to a segment of the house. “I do think it’s healthy for people to express themselves and to have those conversations,” said Swann. “My advice is to take a route to allow some sort of platform, but with guidelines.”

Politics are never discussed at our Thanksgiving dinners. We're too busy talking about relatives that are no longer with us or who are too far away to visit. Add in looking at pictures and home movies from our past, and we're always surprised by how time passes so quickly.

It is so bad that I had to ask my wife to talk with her 95 year old father to cool it with me about politics. He watches CNN and spouts all their talking points. My views are not even considered as serious so I won't have the discussions anymore.

What's to debate?
Leftards are ignorant.
As a poster once said, we know everything they know, and they know nothing that we know; given their utter gullibility and dependence on the propaganda media. They wouldn't know a fact if it fell out of the sky, landed on their head and wiggled.

After making Thanksgiving dinner for the family the past forty three years we are actually going to be "guests" in the home of one of our daughters.
Our son-in-law is a big Bernie fan. (He's also school principal on the fast track for district superintendent) We love him but we obviously don't see eye to eye on things political. Because we are guests in their home I refuse to discuss anything political. If the subject is brought up I will bite my tongue. I know I can hold my own in a debate but I won't be a party to disrupting our family dinner or have an argument in front of my little grandchildren
We just have to bide our time and hope that this very smart Millennial will see the light eventually.

We have a large family (3...going into 4 generations) we never ever discuss politics...ever. We all know how each other feels about certain *political* things. We just decided decades ago not to let politics enter into our family group. If you try......it works well. And don't always try to be the one family member to insist on the "last word".....it truly might be the last time your family even bothers to listen to you.....

We had a metrosexual liberal relative a while back. You know the type. Rachel Maddow without the testosterone.
He annoyed the hell out of us.
He disappeared.
Tragic.

I remember one Thanksgiving about 20 years ago...my aunt just staring at me with her mouth ajar (and full of turkey). She said "you sound like a Republican". Still, she remembered me in her will. RIP Aunt Betty.

We don't do a lot of politics over Thanksgiving, and most of our family is strongly conservative. Not so certain about a new grand neice-in-law, she's a teacher and may be buying the NEA Kool Aid. I have NO intention of having a fight with beloved family members over Thanksgiving. Not happening, if I can do anything to stop it. We'll talk about other things....like kids and grand kids and great grand kids and fun things that all did and places we have been.

Just a suggestion. Don't aggravate your host while they're carving the turkey.
