President Trump has opted against pressuring Senate Republicans to immediately dismiss articles of impeachment, sparing the party the prospect of a clash at the outset of an election year. White House counsel Pat Cipollone signaled during a Thursday meeting with key Senate Republicans that Trump has concluded he has more to gain politically from presenting a detailed defense at trial than from no trial at all, said GOP sources familiar with the discussion. That decision should shield Senate Republicans from the damaging backlash from the conservative base that might ensue — at the onset of GOP primary season —

Senate Republicans should send the impeachment back to the House for them to allow Republican witnesses. The Senate should not take this matter up without a referral based on a fair process, and a legitimate process that is done through the House Judiciary Committee. When the House has done that, then the Senate can take this up. If the Senate does otherwise, the Senate will have legitimized this process forever and allowed our constitution to be shredded.

The idea that all 53 senators do not stand behind the President given the complete BS and the traitors should be rooted out and kicked out of the party-that means you Mittens and Murk and Collins. LEAVE THE PARTY AND BE HONEST AT THE VERY LEAST.

No faith in congressional or senate republicans. Faith is gone. They are too compromised by self interest to believe in something bigger than themselves.

I think it ironic that the party of victimology and identity politics would want to push this impeachment process into the heart of an election year where it is demonstrated by the Democrats what a victim our President is by their totally unfair process. The Democrats are poking the tiger. Just wait till the tiger is awaken.

If those insane pukes in the House are stupid enough to vote for impeachment, the Republicans in the Senate need to watch their butts. If there is the slightest hint of funny stuff, ANY hesitation in supporting Trump, that Senator is toast.

I think #1 makes a good point. Short of that, though, the Senate Republicans have an opportunity to conduct the trial the way the “inquiry” should have been conducted, thus showing which party really has fairness and constitutionality at heart.

Yes a trial would allow the Republicans to call up Lisa Page, Peter, Comey, Brennan, Clapper, Biden, Hunter, Bruce Ohr, Nelli, McCabe, Rod Ro, Obama, Hillary, Bill, the Podesta's, Rice, Lynch and countless more.

I believe there is a special impeachment rule that says senators must be available to vote on impeachment on a moments notice. That means the senators running for the presidential nomination can not campaign and must remain in DC. This also applies to democratic senators. I could be wrong but no rush on impeachment proceedings could be part of McConnell's strategy.
At least this better be his strategy for GOP's, since they have always lacked a spine when it is needed most.

I like the idea of bringing it to the Senate. The very first person called to testify should be the Whistleblower. After they get through tearing him down to little bitty pieces, they should announce they are going to call a vote. Then any Senator who votes for Impeachment will darn sure lose his/her Seat next when their term is up! Could all be over in a few days!

If the Democrats want to impeach and want a trial, give it to them. Draw it out very long. Re-interview every witness the Democrats brought in, this time telling them that heresay is not allowed. Ask them what they know first hand. Supoena Ciarmella. Ask him who he talked to and why his gossip and feelings mean anything. Since he was the first Ciarmella contacted, and since he prepared the original complaint for the so-called whistle-blower, supoena Schiff. Put him under oath. Ask him why the rules were changed for Ciarmella. Ask him why Democrat congressmen were allowed to protest in front of a witness' hotel and why that is not witness tampering. Ask him why Republicans were not allowed to supoena witnesses and had to use his line of questioning. Ask him if the Bidens should get a pass because they are in politics. Ask him if the Steele dossier was manufactured evidence, who paid for it, and why Hillary hiring Russians, Ukranians, Australians, Italians and Brits to manufacture entrapment does not constitute foreign meddling. Ask him if spying on political rivals should get you sent to jail. Keep it up until the Democrats beg for mercy, then go longer 'just to be fair to hearing their charges'. Ask Schiff if he has 'secret evidence'. Ask him for it. Bring in Biden. That would be a show I would pay to see.

If this fiasco ever gets to the Senate, the Republicans should make it the biggest and long drawn out deal as possible, including calling every Democrat on down from Obama to Schiff himself to testify so at the conclusion the American people will know much more about what has been going on in Ukraine, corruption and all, then the Ukrainians themselves. The Democrats made the one sided rules for their impeachment inquisition in the House of Representatives, but the Republicans should make the rules fair in the Senate and make sure that the true story comes out, as the Democrats and their “Deep State” spies have been attempting to limit the President’s constitutional discretion to the point where any future action taken by any Republican President that the Democrats disagree with will subject that President to another Democrat impeachment inquisition, it’s up to the Republicans to see that does not happen.

Geez, exactly how many RINOs who got installed by Soros are there in the Senate? Are they also of the Jim Jones mentality type that the subversive putz Mittens can influence? This article seems to imply that the Senate will have its own star chamber.

While I understand wantIng this to play out in the Senate to thoroughly expose the democrats’ crimes, I am worried about the Senate Republicans who have greatly benefited from the Deep State for decades. Can we honestly believe their loyalty is to the country and not the status quo? This is a fiasco of epic proportions. If Barr and Durham would get their evidence out there before the vote by the House, this could be a moot issue if the democrats are shown to be the ones who put this seditious act into place and that it was being run out of the White House. What good is exposing these criminals if they manage to remove the President who has been a victim of their crimes before they are rightly punished for this coup. If timing is everything, then Barr and Dirham are going to need to step up their game. Maybe the IG’s report will put the fear of God unto them, but I’ll be surprised if it is what is going to be needed to expose and punish an ongoing coup d'etat. If the Republic survives this it will be because of divine intervention. There is just too much corruption embedded in our government for it to police itself.

Senate rules don’t allow hearsay evidence so this is dead on arrival. Although Romney will side with the Democrats and vote to convict.

Do the trial and drag it out for months - subpoena anything with a pulse. Heck, I’d even subpoena Creepy Joes new illegitimate grandchild - I’m sure the kid must knows something about 8arisma.

Some of you are forgetting that the Senate can change the rules just as easily as the House can. Yeah, that means they can have their own kangeroo court and impeach Trump, who, by the way, CANNOT be re-elected. Then what?

This may be a ploy to let the Demonrats know that not only are the NOT going to get rid of Trump, but they are going to provide a big, wonderful stage for the exposition of LOTS of Deep State dirty laundry and ALL of it pointing towards Dems.
This may be an effort to get Dems to rethink whether they really want to open this can of Democrat Worm Blowback, especially with NO Trump removal on the real menu.
