They are called “decepticons” for a reason. McConnell is king, and Cornyn, Thune and Barasso are his praetorian guards. (Snip)
Senator John Cornyn (TX), a key member of the Senate GOP leadership; and a member of the Senate Judiciary and Intelligence committees; warns the White House that a vote to immediately dismiss articles of impeachment and avoid a trial won’t work.“There’s some people talking about trying to stop the bill, dismiss charges basically as soon as they get over here. I think that’s not going to happen. (Snip) “I think it would be hard to find 51 votes to cut the case off before the evidence is presented.”

FTA:
One of the problems in the Senate trial is the participation of the SSCI within the network of interests working to eliminate candidate Trump and then President Trump from office.
SSCI Chairman Richard Burr doesn’t go on an political targeting expedition like that without the approval of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Yes, it really is that simple.
To remind ourselves how Minority and Majority Senator McConnell took down the threat of the Tea Party revisit these old articles: CNN Part I and CNN Part II both showcase how McConnell works. Then do some research on how McConnell worked with Haley Barbour in Mississippi [SEE HERE].

We know where the Democrats stand. They are all marching in lockstep, just like they did in the Obama years following far left leadership.
The ones to watch are the Republicans. There can be no impeachment without Republican assistance. Without Republican assistance, all the Democrats have is a clown show. Have to guess the Republicans are waiting to see what will be offered them for turning on Trump, and how much of a voting backlash they will face.
The Democrats are lawless tyrants. The Republicans are backstabbing assassins.

McConnell, Burr, Cronyn, Thune, Murkowski, all want Trump gone, and they are not even Mormons. I wonder if this resistance is a Freemason thing. I only donate to Donaldjtrump.com.
Do the ingrate senators not have 401ks? There is nothing to impeach.

Be careful what you wish for, RINOs. I doubt Pres Trump and his team are going to play by your milquetoast rules during a Senate trial. There's a lot of dirty laundry that needs to be hung out to dry and at least a couple baskets are Republican deep staters, too.
I'm disappointed with Sen Coryn. I get emails from him all the time telling me he supports Pres Trump. Wish we had a decent primary opponent for him next year.

I have never been on the second civil war bandwagon despite seeing the parallels. We are different people with comfortable lives, largely, and are intermingled without clear geographic lines of separation. We wouldn't be leaving a hardscrabble life to go to a hardscrabble war, we'd be leaving our lazyboys and Netflix to go get shot at.
But if this impeachment were to go through based on what we have seen as the predicate, I think we could be at a breaking point. What we are experiencing is nothing more than the refusal to accept the 2016 election results and the policies that resulted. That's all they have. In the process of that "resistance" the former democrat party, Obama, Clinton, Brennan, Comey, etc. have been outed for having turned the power of the federal government against their political opponents while engaging foreign governments in the process.

I see a different angle to the issue. A Senate trial would allow Republicans to be in charge, and would result in many subpoenas for witness testimony (whistleblower), document production, ancillary issues (Biden Jr.), transcripts, and all the other things that House democrats currently avoid.
By the way, Eric Ciaramella could be called as a ''person of interest'' rather than whistleblower. Then, under oath, he could be convinced to admit that he is the WB, and that he colluded with Schiff and staff.
Not to mention the containment of democrats who would rather be out campaigning, rather than sitting through devastating, embarrassing trial proceedings. Key democrats, such as Schiff, would be exposed as the liars they are- so that even democrat voters could no longer deny it!
I think it would be a much more entertaining event than anything the democrats do in the House. Pass the popcorn!

This is NOT about impeachment. It's a lengthy smear job on the public dime, and the Dems and GOPe UNIPARTY will see this out for a long as they can. Why? If offers them the opportunity to showcase all the dirt over the next months leading into '20 the primary season. The UNIPARTY OBJECT is to get rid of Trump however possible at whatever juncture presents itself before January 2021. Undermine his campaign...run a "legit" challenger...besmirch his family...indict a family member...ruin the convention...withhold support...damn with faint praise...accuse him of other malfeasance and criminality...whatever combination suits the purpose.
And if PDT wins re-election, these past four years will only prove prelude to the next four of unrelenting attacks. Don't kid yourself into thinking otherwise. And don't think any Washington politician of any political stripe is ultimately on his side, either.

I thought i read a couple of weeks ago that there were 51 votes for a resolution which would set out the due process minimum requirements for any articles from the house to be entitled to consideration by the senate. The article was less than clear and the proposition was not covered much at all. And lindsey graham is less than clear.
That said, a trial in the senate which brings out bi.den activities, schiff shenanigans and other dim corruptions, and that goes on for months during the primary season might be interesting even humorous.

McConnell is getting Trump's judges confirmed but that is about it. I don't trust McConnell with a wife as Secretary of Transportation who Chinese family owns a shipping company in China - yeah - no conflicts of interests there. I think McConnell made a deal with Trump - I'll get your judges through but otherwise, I do nothing to help you or your polices or defend you from impeachment.

Why warn Trump??? He did not say anything about the "dismissal". It was other Senate Republicans. The ones with balls.

This is exactly why we stopped giving money to the spineless, useless Republi-can't Party years ago!!!
We still give money directly to good conservative Republican candidates. But this party is about as useless as.. well, I can't think of anything more useless than the Republi-can't Party to even compare it to!!!

Why are we so sure the GOP's in the senate will automatically dismiss any impeachment charges against Trump?
How many Romneys are lurking in the Senate.?

It's just barely possible that McConnell is simply setting up a way to drag this mess into election season and thoroughly educate everyone how lawless the democrats are...
But it's far more likely he's merely been biding his time till he could get Trump under his thumb.
Just dont trust them, not after how they treated the Tea Party.

Ummmm . . . this is ALL about impeachment--or, I should say, taking over our government while making it LOOK legitimate. If you choose to bury your head in the sand and say it's not, then you're not doing yourself any favors.

I'd like to think a Senate trial during Democrat primary season, featuring all the witnesses Schiff has vetoed and featuring what the IG and Durham have found (assuming any of that is available even by then /s) would all blow back on the Democrats. As a minimum, it would neuter every D senator running for president, leaving Biden, Bloomberg, Buttigieg, and a couple of others on their own. Most of the lefty senators would be left quietly stewing in the Senate. In other words, Democrat moderates (such as they are) would be on their own, leading toward a repeat of Chicago 1968 at their convention. That's a vision we might like to see.

I'm with #7 on this. Hold the senate trial, and bring in those witnesses being blocked by Schiff Head. If there were a preliminary vote to reject the House Impeachment articles, the Dimocrats would use that to come back with another set of impeachment articles.

Trump should absolutely file a motion to dismiss any House Article of Impeachment.
Force the scummy GOP bastids to take a stand.
The House conducted their charade under rules of evidence, questioning, witnesses, etc., that totally stripped any Due Process for the President. And those rules were approved by NO Republicans.
It will be a farce if McConnellallows this to get off the ground.
If an actual trial takes place in the Senate, whatever the vote, the GOP IS DEAD, DONE. They are now owned by the Democrats , Soros, and Tom Donahue. I and millions of Trump supporters will live the Republican Party right before the election. We will figuratively burn down the Capitol Building .

To try or not to try. I dunno'....I can appreciate both sides of this conundrum. And I certainly value the eloquence of posters above (#6, you're on fire!).
Right now, I tend to lean toward Senate non-dismissal; I can already hear the 'demedia' (love it!) crying foul a thousand times over if the Senate were to dismiss out-of-hand. And it can be said that a trial might actually present a unique PR opportunity.....

I agree with #7 and #19. McConnell is obligated to address the Articles of Impeachment if forwarded by the House. Simply swiping them away will bring screams of coverup. McConnell is too smart to give the media that ammo. Holding a trial not only gives the GOP a chance to take their own shots at the Pelosi clown show, but an opportunity to drag it all out and cramp the time the Dem Senate primary candidates have to get out and campaign.
My own opinion is that Pelosi is not going to send actual Articles of Impeachment, but instead some kind of limp noodle censure statement. If so, swipe it away with a wide smile, Senator McConnell.
