Des Moines, Iowa—A top Iowa aide to businessman Tom Steyer has resigned a day after The Associated Press revealed he had privately offered campaign contributions to local politicians in exchange for endorsing Steyer’s White House bid. Steyer’s Democratic presidential campaign announced Patrick Murphy’s resignation in a statement late Friday. In a statement Thursday, the former Iowa House speaker apologized for but did not deny the interactions and said the concerns expressed by his former colleagues about his overtures were the result of a “miscommunication.” He didn’t immediately respond to messages from the AP seeking comment Friday. Murphy’s departure leaves Steyer

Handing out packs of Newports to voters in the hoods of Philly or a bit of walking-around money to those in Newark is met with a wink and a nod among Democrats, whose campaigning ethics are so nuanced and complex that only the most cerebral can grasp them.

The only reason Steyer is still on the debate stage is because he is paying people off. I just want to know if he is paying off the DNC as well.

I’m trying to remember. I think Pat Murphy was a Democrat state representative from Dubuque. I seem to remember that this guy has always been shady if he’s the guy that I’m thinking of. I’m just shocked that he would do something like this... or maybe not.

Proponents of a plan that would allow undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses in New Jersey say now is the time to get it done. With the election over, state lawmakers will be back in Trenton for a lame-duck session in the coming weeks and there’s a renewed push to send a bill to the desk of Gov. Phil Murphy, who long has supported the measure. “It’s vitally important,” said state Sen. Teresa Ruiz, one of the prime sponsors of the bill (S3229). She argued these licenses are long overdue "because we know these families contribute to the economic development and vibrancy

Mastercard says it’s one step closer to “unconditional acceptance” of LGBTQ community with the addition of a “True Name” feature on cards. Transgender and nonbinary Mastercard customers will no longer have to explain discrepancies between their legal name and their “true” name. The move was applauded this week by GLAAD. “The implementation of Mastercard’s True Name feature is a crucial step forward in helping to reduce these risks by allowing trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people to have financial products that accurately reflect who they are,” said Scott Turner Schofield, a trainer with the group’s Media Institute, PYMTS.com reported Friday.

They clearly state to potential lovers what they are looking for in terms of life and romance, according to the findings. They also value family and friendships higher than liberals and have a smaller, more intimate group of friends. By contrast, liberals tend to thrive in larger social groups. Oxford professor Nicola Gardini urges people to read and study Latin. He believes that Latin is the antidote for the modern age, which seems transfixed by the spontaneous, the easy, and the ephemeral. His new book, Long Live Latin: The Pleasures of a Useless Language, argues that Latin combines truth and beauty with the timelessness of art. People should study Latin for all the reasons people should read literature. In his Confessions, St. Augustine (354–430 C.E.) “placed the learning of Latin under God’s purview,” Gardini writes. Augustine believed Latin drew a child closer to God, “the truest truth.” Gardini argues that Latin contains the logic and precision of math
