A new blood test could detect breast cancer in patients five years before a lump or other physical symptoms appear, says a new study out of the UK.
The information out of Nottingham University, reported in the Sunday Times of London, says the test would look for antibodies that signal tumor growth before a mass becomes visible.
Earlier detection means earlier treatment, which could possibly save thousands of lives.

Well, I hope this is accurate, and this all works out. Great news if true.

It's a study. How long before the test is available in this country ? We put a man on the moon so long ago. You would think we could cure cancer.

There's more information at breastcancer.org: https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/testing/types/blood_marker
"While breast cancer blood marker tests are promising, they're not absolutely conclusive. When a breast cancer blood marker test comes back negative, it doesn't necessarily mean you're free and clear of breast cancer. And a positive result doesn't always mean that the cancer is growing. These tests may help with diagnosis, but using cancer marker tests to find metastatic breast cancer hasn't helped improve survival yet."

Not just women. Although I know it's rare, ~ one percent of all breast cancer cases develop in men.
So good news all the way around.

RE #7:
I've always said the if men had to get a prostate exam the same way women need to get breast exams, they'd quickly come up with a different method! Or a cure!

I have a blood test done once a year. I'm a twenty five year colon cancer survivor and always wondered why this wasn't looked for in all other cancers. The cancer could maybe have been found sooner and less invasive from what I had to go through. This should be voluntarily done by women and men but I'm sure the search is more detailed than a blood test but it helps.

Not so fast: follow the links and searches to get to the real story...
https://news.sky.com/story/amp/blood-test-could-detect-breast-cancer-five-years-before-clinical-signs-11852901
“Their research found the more panels of TAAs they used the higher the accuracy for detecting cancer, with a panel of nine antigens correctly detecting breast cancer in 37% of the samples from cancer patients and correctly identifying 79% of the control samples as being cancer-free.”
In other words, it failed to identify cancer in 63% of patients already clinically in treatment, and told 21% of cancer-free subjects that they had cancer. So, it’s progress, but no ready for use yet.

#2, one of the problems with the "cure cancer" bumper sticker deal is that "cancer" is several thousand different diseases, with dozens and dozens of very different manifestations, and probably thousands of causes, many of which are flaws in our individual immune systems.
A biochemistry/cellular biology professor friend of mine pointed out years ago that "the average person probably gets cancer about two or three times a week", but our immune systems recognize the runaway cells and destroys them, or they destroy themselves (apoptosis) . It is the rare case where these runaway cells are not able to be identified by our immune system, for various reasons and the cancer continues to grow. A friend's cancer was caused by a missing P53 tumor suppression antigen which most of us have. His cancer eventually killed him.
My point is that "curing cancer" is entirely, totally unlike "curing smallpox" or "curing polio". They are single diseases, and can be focused on and handled. Cancer is a thousand different diseases or more. And some, like a few forms of leukemia are very much curable these days. I have two coworkers who had leukemia and are still healthy 25-35 years later, fully cured, but they were VERY sick for a few years while being treated.

The test is at least 5 years away. Has only been tried on 90 subjects. Now working with a larger group of 800 and hoping for more accuracy. There is more information here (article just posted)

If only the medical and media corporations put as much effort into finding a cure for prostate cancer. It won't happen of course, because men are expendable and really don't count anymore.

Somehow I can envision the cost of healthcare skyrocketing as more women do the Angelina Jolie thing based on a possible event 5 or more years away!
