Former Vice President Joe Biden was denied communion at a Catholic Church in South Carolina Sunday because of his staunch position in favor of abortion.
Biden, who earlier this year reversed course on his long held stance in favor of the Hyde Amendment, was attending a worship service at Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Florence, South Carolina, when he attempted to receive the sacrament. The former vice president, however, was rebuffed by the church’s pastor, Father Robert E. Morey, because of his support for abortion.

Is the VP formally excommunicated? He should be, but that's a Bishop's decision.
I am a Eucharistic minister for many year and I have never refused anyone in the Communion line no matter who the person is or what I know about their private life, bc I don't know if they just went to Confession before the Mass, and I'm not allowed to judge.
At a funeral or a wedding many people come up to receive who are not in a state of grace. You think I refuse people?
In the Communion line, no one is loathsome. Sorry. Only he Bishop can excommunicate. A priest shouldn't let the Bishop off the hook.

I find it necessary to correct you on several points, #4. First, unless you are ordained you are an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. So yes, it is probably not your place to be denying Communion to anyone. However if someone who is engaged in obvious and overt sinfulness, i.e. open support of abortion, were to regularly come to receive Communion you might want to discuss this with your pastor to decide the best way to handle that situation. At a wedding or a funeral it should be made clear to those who are not in full communion with the Church that they should not receive Communion. This isn't the place to delve into the reasons why, but you and anyone one else who is interested might want to check that out as well. Finally, denial of the Eucharist is not excommunication. I think some further instruction might be helpful.
The Church must stand for something or much of what it teaches is meaningless not mean. Many public figures who are a scandal (a word with particular meaning) must be called out. This case with Biden is a start albeit a small one.

Bravo! And it IS about time! Wish I’d been there.
Once, when I lived in Virginia, we had a visiting priest from Maryland who bragged during the homily about having given the Eucharist to Barbara Mikulski - a lesbian “Catholic” congresswoman from Maryland. When it was time to receive communion, I made sure to get in line with one of the Eucharistic Ministers and not that priest.
IIRC, Pope JPII gave Pelosi an earful on her abortion support but she still recieves communion despite not changing her stance. I would love to be a fly on the wall when she has her final conference with God.

The great Alinsky told his 'true believers'' to make people live up to their own standards. The priest was just helping Biden do that. However, if it is a sacrament, then it is The Lord's Table, not the table of the Catholic church or any other denomination. For by Grace we are saved and not that of ourselves.

#4, if you were acting as distributor of Holy Communion (you should use that term, #4) and Old Jo Biden was standing in line, pants unzipped, masturbating (not that uncommon for elderly men who are losing their filters because of dementia) would you still give him the host? (At least, not give it to him, in his hand?)
Old Jo's position makes him a baby killing Catholic. He is loud and proud about it. Nearly every Democrat House and Senate member, is a baby killing Catholic, including my own senator, the dimwitted Bobby Casey, who pretends that he is his father.
Baby killing members of Congress used to have a standard line - abortion should be safe, legal, and rare. They no longer talk about rare. They talk, approvingly, about killing the baby after it is born.
I salute the priest. It took courage to do that, and my former faith has not displayed much courage lately.

I was raised in a devout Catholic family. Twelve years of parochial school, mass every week.
The Sunday after Obama was elected the first time the priest stepped off the altar during the homily and thanked God for Bathouse Barry winning. I sat there in shock and cried.
The only time since that I’ve set foot in a Church was for my father’s funeral.
Needless to say, I’m thrilled to hear this. Next up, Stretchface Pelosi.

It is important to understand why someone is denied communion. If they take communion in an ungodly state, they are bringing condemnation onto themselves by taking communion. The Pastor is PROTECTING Biden from eternal damnation, at least for that moment. Communion is a means of grace. Jesus gave us communion so we can draw close to Him and enjoy the comfort and knowledge of His sacrifice for us. We do this in remembrance of Him. When someone who is not a believer or is in an overt sinful state - such as Biden who supports abortion - if he takes communion, he is blaspheming God and the Holy Spirit - he is telling God His rules are not relevant or applicable to him/ How well do you think that will go for him at the eternal judgment? In his current condition, Biden is toast in eternity, along with Pelosi, Schiff and many others. What this tells you is they are not believers and are in for a very huge surprise at the final judgment. Pray for their souls.

I am not Catholic and also uninformed about Catholic practices and procedures. My question is how did the newspaper find out that Biden was denied? I would hope the information didn't spring from the Church.

From what I have seen in my Parish, most Catholics no longer go to Confession or Penance.
It isn't just Funerals and Weddings where people receive Communion outside a State of Grace.
Things are not what they used to be.

Thank you, #6.
Good old St. Anthony! My parish is a St. Anthony also, where I am an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and also a Lector. We are a small parish of only 150 families in a small town of 5,000 people, so I know just about everyone in the Communion line. We are a tourist destination and get a lot of summer people who are warmly welcomed to our little community. (A good sign that a stranger takes the Faith seriously is that they come to Mass while on vacation.) During weddings and funerals where guests come from many faiths, or no faith, I heighten my awareness. At every such special Mass the priest usually explains that non Catholics are welcome in line to receive a blessing, indicated by the person placing crossed hands on their shoulders. There have been many times where I have presented the Host and it is obvious the person has no clue. I simply put the Host back into the Communion Bowl and bless the person with a sign of the cross on their forehead.
As #22 explained, the Eucharist is the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. St. Paul warned those who receive unworthily, without believing in the eternal Real Presence, are damning themselves. The Catholic Church has protected the Sacredness of the Eucharist for 2,000 years while still welcoming everyone to the Table of the Lord. The Church teaches that Spiritual Communion is possible for those not yet catechized, still in formation or outside the Church, through the blessing of the Priest, Eucharistic Minister or through their own internal desire.
I fully support Fr. Morey's actions, and I think St. Anthony does also for he lived in a time of dwindling faith. In one of the legends of St. Anthony, the Great Preacher, a challenge was made that a donkey has more reverence for the Eucharist than the local people. One man stepped forward to accept and for three days he overfed his donkey, while St. Anthony fasted. On the third day the man placed his donkey on one end of the town square and St. Anthony was on the other. St. Anthony lifted the Host and to the stunned amazement of the crowd the donkey crossed the square, knelt down and bowed his head before the Blessed Sacrament. Truth or legend? I choose Truth.
As to our current Pope; the Church survived the Borgias, we will survive Francis.

What about Pelosi, was Ted Kennedy able to take communion? Or did he just avoid church altogether?
There are many Catholics in government and I'l will to bet a good portion should be allowed communion, just because of their stance on abortion.

God bless that priest for holding the Most Blessed Sacrament holy and inviolable. The Eurachrist is for those who are in Communion with God and with the rest of the world. Abortionists and their supporters are not welcome until (or unless) they get right with God.

#37 - We can never presume the state of life of any person. Was she "refused" or did she abstain for her own reasons? We cannot know. If the situation was prior to Vatican II (early to mid 1960's) the Church's position against divorce often led people to believe that if they were divorced they could not receive. After Vatican II the Church clarified that if a Catholic divorced (for serious reasons such as abuse) and they remain chaste and do not remarry, they can receive Holy Communion. Without a Church annulment they are still considered sacramentally married.
It is the remarriage without an annulment, which is considered an adulterous relationship, that is the issue. The Sacrament of Matrimony is dependent on full consent. The annulment investigation centers on whether or not any part of that consent was fraudulent. For example; both parties consent to being open to children during the exchange of vows, but should one of the parties refuse to have children then an annulment is granted.

I am not a Catholic. This was an act between Joe and the Church. Joe isn't talking about is, so the information came from the Father. I have a problem with that, no matter what a horse's behind Joe is. Which one will be at odds with G-d?
