My wife and I celebrate our eighth wedding anniversary this week. By millennial standards, we have officially gained Old Married Couple status. To mark this new phase of our journey, I have started wearing Hawaiian shirts and fanny packs. I am far from a relationship guru — if such a thing even exists — but I have learned a few things after eight years and four kids. I probably need another few years under my belt (or in my fanny pack, as the case may be) before I start dispensing marriage tips, but I can at least point out the bad ones. So, to celebrate eight years of matrimony,

Eight years of marriage and Matt is an expert. OK...I guess. Maybe I was the only one who laughed out loud.

I was married 44 years before my wife died. I wrote a book up on Amazon about our relationship that is also on Audible. My Father taught me so much about how to 'be married,' and time and again, I heard him talking to me (long after his death), telling me that it just wasn't worth being angry over. He was always right. It's titled 'I Remember Judy - A Love Story.' The title references her advancing dementia. When she couldn't remember something, I would tell her, 'I remember, Judy.'

Better advice: Buy supermarket flowers once a week. Even if you get divorced down the road, you have set the standard for the next spouse. "You know xxxx brought home flowers every week" Tough act to follow.

I agree with all his "points". Eight years and four kids...this guy's on the right track. The Bible says children are a blessing from the Lord.

I've been married 55 years, my parents & in-laws were married until death did them us part. My Dad always said the greatest gift you can give your children is to love & respect the Mother of your children. All my friends who divorced said they wished they had stayed with their first. Life is very complicated, so it's hard to say what works. I think it's the values parents teach & the example they set & value of self worth.

Is Why You Got Trump

For all of Trump’s flaws, real or perceived, the one thing that can always be counted on with him is that he’s going to say what he thinks. He’s unfiltered and that can lead to some awkward moments, but also some gratifying moments because he’s willing to say what other Republicans won’t. He’s willing to fight battles the party formerly refused to fight. This propensity has led to plenty of spittle flinging rants about decorum, but the lesson shouldn’t go unlearned by the GOP. One of the reasons voters got so frustrated prior to Trump was the constant fake, high-minded tripe that passed for political speech throughout the Obama years.

Washington has grown accustomed to the unexpected, the unusual and even the bizarre during the presidency of Donald Trump. But is it ready for John Bolton, hero of the “Resistance”? It’s a question increasingly on the minds of lawmakers, U.S. diplomats and possibly Trump himself as the House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry forges ahead. A key revelation so far: Bolton, while serving as Trump’s national security adviser, raised alarms about the politically questionable role informal actors were playing in shaping U.S. foreign policy toward Ukraine.

CNN military analyst and retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling criticized former Secretary of Defense James Mattis for making jokes about President Trump during the Al Smith Memorial Foundation dinner. Mattis joked about how Trump called him the "world's most overrated general." "So I'm honored to be considered that by Donald Trump because he also called Meryl Streep an overrated actress. So I guess I'm the Meryl Streep of generals, and frankly that sounds pretty good to me," he said on Thursday.

President Donald Trump called former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis “the world’s most overrated general” during a tense White House meeting Wednesday with lawmakers over the growing Syria/Turkey conflict, according to sources familiar with the meeting. The incident wasn’t the first time Trump has attacked the popular former Marine Corps general, once one of his most highly praised Cabinet officials. But since Mattis announced his resignation from the top Defense Department job last December, the president’s view of Mattis has increasingly soured.

This is interesting on the merits but also interesting in that two of the most powerful platforms in right-wing media are promoting it. I suppose one could argue that Trump handing the G7 to his own business isn’t a textbook emolument since it doesn’t really function as a bribe, which is what the constitutional ban is all about. We don’t want the president receiving fat envelopes from foreign dignitaries for fear that that’ll influence his views on foreign policy.

As The Hill notes, Planned Parenthood is planning to make a major investment in the 2020 election. The abortion conglomerate’s super PAC announced that it would be spending upwards of $45 million to unseat Republican politicians and replace them with Democrats. More from The Hill: The investment will fund a “large-scale” grassroots organization and canvass, digital, television, radio and mail programs. “The stakes are higher than ever, and we’re coming out more powerfully than ever with the largest investment we’ve ever made,” said Kelley Robinson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes, in an interview with The Hill. …

He failed miserably and even placed third in total votes in his own state of Utah.

At best, they regard his wife with pity, as the prisoner of a loveless marriage. “Inside the Trump marriage: Melanie’s burden,” “The Sad Truth,” “Dark Secrets” are typical headlines. “#SaveMelania” memes trended online as Vanity Fair fantasized she would divorce her husband and become a feminist icon.

Catholic bishops have a history of telling politicians who support abortion, like Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, that they should not receive communion at Catholic masses.
