I am freelancing this article. Doing so means that I work from home, set my own schedule and have most days of the week free to write books. While books provide the bulk of my income, freelancing provides substantial extra money that my family and I have come to expect. Barring any unforeseen change in circumstances, over the next year I’ll freelance dozens of articles at a rate of one or occasionally two a week. If I did that in California, I’d be opening up my employers to legal penalties. Bill AB-5, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, has just passed, limiting California freelancers

This should be opposed as being anti- woman, anti- disabled, ageist, sexist, etc. Also, anti-environment because now the may to drive to an office.

Many freelance writers do not want to be tied to an employer. Then you are subject to being 'on the clock' every day, writing about topics you may have no interest or expertise in, and adhering to a long list of company policies. Perhaps those writers who lean left politically will suddenly 'get woke' to the dangers of government's heavy hand.

California's socialist legislature provides yet another incentive for productive Americans to move out of California.

My beautiful state is run by two bit-tinhorn tyrants. This doesn't affect me, but come for the free-lance journalists, come for the stay-at-home "you name its". Government by a thousand cuts.
Sad. Leaving this state ASAP to bring my red state values to another blue state since Cali is a lost cause.

Freelancers in California need to stay there and work to correct the "liberalism" that is destroying the state.

An observation - most of the ridiculous bills coming out of Sacramento are written and sponsored by one of the many Hispanic members of the legislature.
This is not a 'racist' statement in that I don't know the race of the legislator. It is only an observation.

It ain’t right and it ain’t American. I’m sick of California. Born and raised here and lived here my whole life. I’m 69 years old and I’m ready to bail out of here. It just keeps getting worse and worse. The result of democrats having taken control of the entire state from top to bottom front to back.

As they say reap what you sow. Reporters, notoriously liberal will now feel the wrath of the untethered bureaucrat. Next designers, techies, etc. think about it. You are all for these people controlling other people's lives now let's see how that shoe fits on your foot.

Some of these slugs that protest the hands that feed them( Uber, etc.) are less intelligent than their brothers from the auto factories in the last century.

To repeat - TOO DAMN BAD. You voted for these legislators and judges. You can live with your choices. Don't come to Texas whining about California because You screwed it up.

Nobody ever seems to ask where the state gets the authority to do something like that. They never demand that these petty little dictators show where the state or federal constitutions gave the legislature this power. Never accept the initial premise of any commie aka socialist aka leftard; invariably it is false.

No one is safe when the legislature is in session. The problem is that politicians always feel as though they have to "do" something to pretend to care about us. Also, the problem is not full-time or free-lance writers. It is full-time legislators.

Very worrisome......the left is very pro union....if at some point they require writers to belong to a union to publish, that would mean the left can control what's published....I fear this is a setup to all writers have to belong to the writers union and if you dont you dont publish.

The IRS already does what this bill attempts to remedy. If the IRS perceives that a contractor, i.e. a 1099 worker, is technically an employee of the employer based on certain criteria, the IRS will will so determine and come back on the employer for FICA and Medicare and FUTA taxes plus penalties. That's why less than scrupulous employers will pay casual labor in cash, under the table and off the books.
