It's no secret that technology plays an important role in our lives. Almost every single aspect of our life is ruled by technology, from smart phones to computers and the internet. That's why it's not surprising to know that Google and Facebook are keeping tabs on gun owners' firearms.
According to The Firearms Blog (TFB), the two tech giants are scanning users' pictures to look for serial numbers. They're then creating an index of every person's firearms based on the image scans. If you've posted a picture of your firearm on a social networking site and didn't smear out the serial number, chances are it's indexed on Google images.

Blurring with a computer program may not be effective. The government unblurred a face that was blurred in that swirl pattern

Why does anyone display their weapons anyway? Isn't that sort of like exposing your "junk"?
But if you must, then maybe put some opaque tape over the numbers. Perhaps you should also make sure that there are no fingerprints on the items

Fortunately, I sold all my firearms except for the one old broken shotgun, about two years ago.
And I never put any images on the web, back when I had some.

Frankly taking pictures of your weapons and then plastering them on any social media is a dumb idea. Would you take pictures of your gold and silver coins? Don't think so.

The backstory here is the The Firearm Blog only discovered this because of an article on Jalopnik about Google and Facebook doing OCR on car license plates in online photos. So it's firearms and cars.

If you own any sort of self defense weapon including knives...you should not be on Social Media! What are you thinking? It is the sewer of the current generation. I'm not on one Social Media platform and never will be! I was on Facebook and deleted my account 7 years ago...and I know that that data is still out there somewhere for anyone to get to!!! NOTHING is EVER truly deleted when it comes to DATA! EVER! Why do you think we are moving to Pedabyte Storage in large corporations? Terabyte was the far distant never to be reached in my lifetime when I was 40 in IT Management at a large bank. They are out of disc and buying more every day...because NOTHING is ever deleted! Be careful what you are doing out there!

Never post anything of value to you on the web. Do not post your children or your guns. No one really cares and there are too many predators out there. I think you will find that true techies never ever post their children's pictures or information anywhere if they can help it.

I always kept my gun ownership a secret except with like-minded friends and family. I would never have posed with any weapon, but just once, in a old-timey gag photo, holding a prop. Good luck looking for a serial number, Google!

If you want to know whom the biggest communist businesses are in the USA, look no further than lying Facebook and Google. Pals of Soros, Barry and the Butcher no doubt.

If I had any weapons, I wouldn't brag about it anywhere.

I have done this more than once. Its unlikely little tiny serial numbers were visible, but who cares? When I bought the new ones I filled out the yellow form, so the info is available to the ATF. I have a CC permit and that shows up any time a cop runs my license plate. The info is out there no matter how hard I kight try to hide it. We aren't fooling anyone.
What we do by hiding our gun ownership is to make people think it isn't common, and to make it look like something shameful. In my area, everyone owns and shoots guns regularly. Even the libs. It is as much a part of daily life as going to work or playing with the grandkids. You want mine you will have to go through me, my whole family and my neighborhood. If you survive that, the local cops like guns too. This aint the east coast. We do free here.

A great rule is, if there ain't a pic of your firearm, it got lost overboard in a boating accident...and cover the camera on your PC/laptop, and pull the gutz out of Alexa and Echo because they spy on you as well...conspiracy?? I think not....truth...

Makes sense to me.
Facebook is undressing oneself in public. A lot of folks like to do that apparently.
