Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell briefed Republicans in a closed-door session about how they would conduct a Senate trial if the House sends over articles of impeachment.
Senate Republicans believe it is becoming increasingly likely, if not inevitable, that House Democrats will pass articles of impeachment against President Trump in the coming weeks. McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, on Wednesday gave fellow GOP lawmakers a tutorial on how to conduct a trial based on how the process proceeded in the past.
“Every indication is that articles will be coming our way, eventually,” Sen. Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican, said after the meeting.

I also want an investigation of McConnell's wife, and her family's China connection.

I hope Mitch & company make up new rules and give the Republican House members an opportunity to conduct an thorough investigation of the charges that has thus far been denied them by the House Speaker. They need to interview witnesses, cross examine those already interviewed and have an opportunity to present 'the other side" of the story.

Impeachment has been a joke from Day 1. And now these dopes are going to turn it into something legit? Sheeesh. Drain it all. Let's keep the building and laws, and repopulate the House and Senate.

So McConnell wants to conduct a Senate trial "based on how the process proceeded in the past". My question is why? The Dems from the getgo have chosen to ignore that very thing. But isn't that the problem? The Repubs play by the rules, the Dems don't; for which the Repubs never get credit I might add. Same song, different verse. (sigh)

The House completely changed their rules on Impeachment to Get Trump.
The Senate should do the same thing. They should grant themselves the opportunity
to call witnesses under oath.

Unlike the House the Senate needs 67 votes to change the rules. So IMO, Mitch is playing it well by not dying on that hill. If the impeachment does arrive (which, frankly, I doubt at this time) it will be totally, harshly partisan based on the thinnest reed. Any Democrat/RINO Senator from one of the 30 states carried by Trump (and a few more leaning to him for 2020) will think twice. The voters will skin them alive.

Don't sell Senator McConnell short. He isn't going to preside over a Senate conviction. If it comes to the Senate, he will follow Senate rules, but he will squeeze, condense and overrule as necessary to make it short and unsuccessful. Wait and see.

The best way to have a trial for Trump is to put the dims on trial. Ignore Trump and simply do a public exposé of all the dims corruption that led up to the so-called impeachment. Then say, all in favor of acquittal blink your eyes. NOT GUILTY! (gavel slam)

I like this play. Send a message that the Rebublicans are going to play the wussy they usual play. By the old rules and such. He isn't tipping his hand and can change. I think it is essential to blind side Dems with rule changes allowing full investigation and start subpoena Dem House lawmakers and their staff. Drag this thing on right up until the election and leak all the stuff just like the Dems. Then, right before the election, dismiss the chagre as baseless.

This should be simple.
First tell Pelousy, Shifty, and the rest of the lefty tyrants (both parties) to FOAD.
Second, tell the Senate there will be no hearing. There is no proof of a crime, and therefore, no need for a hearing.
End it.
Sadly, this won't happen. Washington is corrupt. If they cannot beat Trump at the voting booth, they may well try an illegal impeachment and follow through on it if they receive enough money. Don't doubt it for a second. These people have a price.

Up until now I did not think that Pelosi would be stupid enough to follow through on formal impeachment but now she might do it out of sheer vindictiveness for being called a "third grade politician" and prove the President's point.

I expect Nasty Nancy and her band of tolalitarians to continue their "impeachment circus" as long as they can, perhaps never voting out articles of impeachment. If they do, their best one is to catch him for tearing the "Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Federal Law" tags off his hotel mattresses.
What Turtle Mc Connell and the GOP Senate should do if and when the House sends their phony articles over is to recieve them and quickly hold a vote to dismiss the charges without a "trial" or hearing. Which is what they won't do, of coursed.

Ah yes, the Stupid Party prepares to "follow the rules". This is complete and utter nonsense. The Senate needs to summarily dismiss the impeachment articles as baseless and fraudulent. There are no "high crimes and misdemeanors" and to proceed as if everyone is going to pretend there are just makes a mockery of the entire process.
The Democrat Party has refused to accept the will of the American people and their legal election of the President. They have sabotaged him at every turn, illegally surveiled him and his officers, and brought forth completely false charges. Those charges should NOT be treated as legitimate.
The Senate should end this farce and constitutional outrage by simply refusing to accept the baseless articles so no future House would be tempted to do so again.

I agree with posters # 8 & 12, and believe # 18 is on to it. What "Articles" could the 'Rats draft up which would not make them look absurd and dangerous to most of the country? Better for them to keep the pot boiling and their idiot voter base on edge.

I get the feeling that what President Trump did to Nancy Pelosi yesterday in the meeting on Syria and Mitch McConnell they are tugging at the democrats to make a move. You always prepare for war but hoping there would not be one. Let the leadership in Congress along with Adam the liar Schiff hang themselves with their own rope. You can't impeach someone because you just plain don't like them 'high crimes and misdemeanors' do apply.

The Impeachment process has become a joke. President Trump should start using the Impeachment as a badge of honor since it is no longer about crimes and misdemeanors but simply because the other side does not like what is being done to their power.
Hey, when I can get the other side to Impeach me, then I must be doing my job right. Is that the way it is going to be from here on out?

I hope McConnell does better than Graham . Graham promised to do numerous investigations as soon as he took the leadership job on judiciary committee in January ....It's October not one investigation.

OP provided an aspect I hadn't thought of... the Senate can investigate EVERYTHING the House did and refused to make public... i.e. all the perfidy, lying, obfuscation and COLLUSION. The dems, should they pass articles of impeachment, are in for a very rough ride. My question is, are they that stupid? I know Nadler is... certainly Schiff appears to be as well. We'll see. I hope Senator Graham grows back a pair.

Poster #6 - The point is for the Senate to establish rules for the Senate process to meet the Republican agenda. Mitch can simply set the rules for Impeachment Inquiry by decree or a majority and establish rules that allow the House Republicans the opportunity to conduct the investigation they have been denied by the Speaker of the House. Heck, why not make Impeachment require a unanimous vote of the Senate while they are at it? The House has made a mockery of the process, so why should the Senate allow them to get away with it?

#24, Graham and the rest of the cowardly Republicans are waiting for the IG Report to come out. Depending on what it finds, they will then decide what they want to do. If it is had news for the democrats, they will muster a little courage and fight back on behalf of this President. If it is ambivalent or finds no wrongdoing, they will abandon whatever little support they have shown for the President. They will vote for impeachment in a New York minute. These are, after all, politicians and it is all about themselves and protecting the status quo. A bunch of more scurrilous backstabbers you will not find anywhere.
