"Think with a scarcity mindset." That was the advice Lilliann M. Paine of UW-Extension Milwaukee County gave participants in a poverty simulation workshop, "Just Neighbors." Paine and Amanda Kostman of UW-Extension Walworth County arranged the workshop to help participants understand the challenges of poverty. The workshop was one of several opportunities participants had to see how poverty and trauma interacted at the two-day 2019 Summit on Poverty and SWIM Conference, hosted by the Social Development Commission, Marquette University and Scaling Wellness in Milwaukee (SWIM).

Comments:

Think with a scarcity mindset gets the play, but here's the truth: "It made me realize you can come out of poverty; it's more of a mindset than a choice."

It's kinda hard to think with a "scarcity mindset" when all the so-called impoverished Americans you see are all running around wearing $200 Nikes and Facetiming on their free Obamaphones.

Poverty is a problem in this country only if you have all the trimmings that got your family into that situation in the first place like obesity, drug addiction, alcoholism, stupidity and no sense of honor. Children of the "poor" in most places receive three free meals a day, free memberships to places like the YMCA that the rest of their neighbors can no longer afford, free housing or rent subsidies, free medical care, free college and everything else free that the Uncle Sugar Safety Net provides. How many "poor" people do you see on the street not carrying a smart phone or a pack of cigarettes or wearing $100-plus athletic shoes? The concept is just another democrat myth.

Scarcity? - I see too many (well one tattoo is one too many) tattoos and piercing on poor people. I an afford a tattoo but don't choose to get one. And poor people in this country have it pretty darn good compared to real poor people in Third World countries.

With our roaring economy that lifts all boats that want lifting, with few exceptions, we have to listen to scarcity drivel. Like talking down the economy, liberals are trying to talk down Americans' view of their own prosperity. They want us to believe that while WE may be just fine, millions and millions, gazillions even, are in poverty. That's one more liberal narrative we can afford to dismiss.

Who is paying these people to come up with this nonsense? If there really were any poverty - - these chumps would have to go out and do some real work.

As the skinny-bones African said, when asked why he wanted to emigrate to the US, "I would like to live in a country where the poor people are fat."

There is ABSOLUTELY NO "poverty " in this country, unless you choose to live that way. Not buying this line of BS.

The White House announced late Sunday that Turkey will soon move forward with a planned military operation in northeast Syria, as U.S. troops who have been deployed and operating with Kurdish-led forces in the area began pulling back from their positions. The decision sent shockwaves through the region and Washington, with U.S. officials telling Fox News that top Pentagon officials were “completely blindsided” and “shocked” by the order to pull back hundreds of U.S. troops, a move that effectively green-lights the Turkey operation.

It was June 11 when a teenager showed up at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin short of breath. He had lost a lot of weight, was fatigued and couldn't do routine activities. A chest X-ray showed something doctors found odd: interstitial pneumonia. Unlike the more common viral or bacterial pneumonia that infects one or two of the lungs’ five lobes, interstitial pneumonia looks like a complex spider web crisscrossing the entire lung. “It's usually associated with bad disease,” said Michael Meyer, medical director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

A deeply divided Supreme Court ruled Thursday that federal courts may not intervene to block even the most partisan election maps drawn by state lawmakers, a decision that allows such gerrymandering to continue unabated. The 5-4 opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts and joined by the court's other conservatives said partisan election maps drawn by North Carolina Republicans and Maryland Democrats are constitutional despite their one-sided nature.

Michigan Rep. Justin Amash became the first Republican lawmaker to declare that President Donald Trump committed impeachable offenses and that Attorney General William Barr “deliberately misrepresented” special counsel Robert Mueller’s report. Amash, whose libertarian views often put him at odds with Trump and his fellow Republicans, posted a series of tweets Saturday afternoon outlining positions that even some Democrats have been unwilling to embrace — an extraordinary development that comes as Democratic leaders face increasing pressure from progressives to launch impeachment proceedings.

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan says he believes there are some Democrats who could defeat President Donald Trump in next year´s election. “The person who defines that race is going to win the race. If this is about Donald Trump and his personality, he isn’t going to win it,” Ryan said Monday night during a speech in Vero Beach, Florida. The speech was one of Ryan´s first public appearances since retiring from Congress

One of the factors that has kept Bob Uecker in the radio booth for the Milwaukee Brewers well into his 80s is the manner in which players have treated him as one of their own. But, when the players put their money where their mouths were last November, it stunned Uecker, moving him to the brink of tears. When deciding who would get full playoff shares after the Brewers advanced within one game of the World Series, the players voted to give one to Uecker, which was worth $123,000.

I am nonbinary. I was assigned female at birth, but my gender is neither male nor female. When my ex-partner and I were trying to conceive our first child, I had not transitioned yet and was still identifying as a woman. We were a same-sex lesbian couple searching cryobanks for the perfect sperm donor. I was ready and excited to have children, but the idea of pregnancy terrified me—repulsed me, actually—but my then-partner was excited to carry a child, so we shopped for sperm. I joked that the idea of lesbians needing sperm to start a family was

To end it, we have to change. That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country.”Ocasio-Cortez continued, claiming without evidence: “Yesterday morning I spoke with a woman

KYIV (Ukraine) – Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden received $900,000 for lobbying activities from Burisma Group, Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada member Andriy Derkach said citing investigation materials. Derkach publicized documents which, as he said, "describe the mechanism of getting money by Biden Sr." at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine's press center in Kyiv on Wednesday. "This was the transfer of Burisma Group's funds for lobbying activities, as investigators believe, personally to Joe Biden through a lobbying company. Funds in the amount of $900,000 were transferred to the U.S.-based company Rosemont Seneca Partners, which according to open sources, in particular, the New York Times, is affiliated with Biden. Washington - Each state in America has an official state bird, usually an iconic species that helps define the landscape. Minnesota chose the common loon, whose haunting wails echo across the state’s northern lakes each summer. Georgia picked the brown thrasher, a fiercely territorial bird with a repertoire of more than 1,000 song types. But as the planet warms and birds across the country relocate to escape the heat, at least eight states could see their state birds largely or entirely disappear from within their borders during the summer, according to a new study.

While the Supreme Court heard arguments on Tuesday about whether sex discrimination, as codified in the 1964 Civil Rights Act, also applies to sexually fluid people – intersex, transgender -- activists protested outside the court proclaiming that sex is not based on biology. LGBT activists yelled, “trans women are women” and had several speakers lecture on gender diversity. On the other side, the conservative group Concerned Women of America pressed that changing the meaning of “sex” in the Civil Rights Act “would greatly undermine the women's movement.” They held signs that read, "Sex is not Gender."

With its spouting geysers, majestic mountains, awe-inspiring waterfalls, and panoramic views, Yellowstone National Park has the undeniable power to uplift. But it also has an unparalleled potential to destroy. Concealed beneath the park rests the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano in North America. Each year, millions of visitors trek over a massive magma chamber that, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), stretches from 5 km to 17 km beneath the surface and is about 90 km long and about 40 km wide. A little deeper rests another chamber that's 4.5 times larger. The Yellowstone supervolcano has unleashed three cataclysmic eruptions in the past 2.1 million years;

In the latest edition of La Repubblica, Pope Francis' longtime atheist friend and interviewer, Eugenio Scalfari, claims that the Pope told him that once Jesus Christ became incarnate, he was a man, a "man of exceptional virtues" but "not at all a God." The teaching of the Catholic Church and most Christian churches is that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was incarnated as fully man and fully God. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "The unique and altogether singular event of the Incarnation of the Son of God does not mean that Jesus Christ is part God and part man, nor does it imply that he is the result
