In the latest edition of La Repubblica, Pope Francis' longtime atheist friend and interviewer, Eugenio Scalfari, claims that the Pope told him that once Jesus Christ became incarnate, he was a man, a "man of exceptional virtues" but "not at all a God."
The teaching of the Catholic Church and most Christian churches is that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was incarnated as fully man and fully God.
As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "The unique and altogether singular event of the Incarnation of the Son of God does not mean that Jesus Christ is part God and part man, nor does it imply that he is the result

He would have been tortured and burned at the stake for this in 1300's

There have been too many examples of heretical statements by this Pope for us to dismiss them all as "misquotes."

Well, out of the 266 popes, that means the vote on "Was Jesus God?" is 265 to 1.

this guy never tells the truth about what the Pope says. I'll wait and read what was really said. Scalfari must be a democrat.

This is no surprise. Most of our liberal Protestant ministers are basically atheists now. They only want to push social justice themes and have no interest in saving souls.

If true, the current Pope is not competent to lead his church...
...oh, never mind. We knew that, already.

I have always been a protestant and never in the fold of the Catholic church. I have met good people here and in Mexico who are practicing Catholics and I respect them highly as individuals. There are two in my sister's family. Given that, I will say it is no surprise to me that this pope does not believe in God nor the Son; definitely not a Christian for sure.

I am not a Catholic, and I dislike Pope Francis for so many reasons, but in this case i think it is possible that Scalfari got it wrong.

If this is indeed yet another misquote, it is so substantial that Francis should publicly disown Scalfari and never sit down with him again. If Francis is not willing to do that, we have no choice but to accept his reported statements as representing his genuine beliefs. Fool me once...

Fake news is considered credible if it says what we are predisposed to believe (or what we hope is true).
It's more likely just the latest in a long line of steaming piles...

May I offer the Nicene Creed as evidence that Jesus Christ is "of the same essence" of The Father and is in fact God as well as Man.
I would also expect that an atheist would have a different opinion - until he dies.

I would like Pope Francis clarify this matter. I'm not buying it but, for the record and because so many trust in his word, he should be addressed ... promptly.

Q. "Is the Pope Catholic?"
A. Looks like he isn't Catholic anymore
However, little brown bears still poop in the woods. :)

Time for Pope Francis to retire and be replaced by Cardinal Sarah and maybe we can begin the healing process in the Church. Similar to the world of politics in the United States, there are too many people in the upper hierarchy who should retire as well so we can start fresh.

This is the SIXTH time Pope Francis has "reached out" to Scalfari and been interviewed, although he knows that Scalfari does not record or even take notes, and that what emerges is always Scalfari's unreliable guess at what Francis possibly said or meant.
I do not believe that Pope Francis fully and formally denies Jesus is God. But I do believe the ambiguity and equivocation are intentional. If now, why would Pope Francis favor Scalfari with interviews over and over again?
By the way, it's 1,115 days since Francis has refused to answer legitimate theological questions (dubia) from his own cardinals. He can't be bothered to deliver a "Yes" that means "Yes" or a "No" that means "No." And the Bible says God is not the author of confusion.
