The federal government has opened hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in California for oil and gas drilling as part of a broader effort to strengthen energy independence.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued its final decision Friday, allowing oil and gas leases on plots mostly in the Central Valley and parts of the Central Coast.
The 725,000 acres of public land in Central California had been off-limits to oil and gas drilling since 2013. The plan, initially announced in May, was part of a Trump administration goal to make the U.S. energy-independent. Critics have called it a string of giveaways to the industry.

So the BLM makes these decisions? I suppose I should have known that, but it seems like too much power for a corrupt agency. These are the same people that shot the Bundy's cattle and drive ranchers out of business so they can take their land. Maybe there has been a change of leadership, but that can change again too.

It's the central valley. Used to be great farm land until California cut off irrigation to save the delta smelt. Right not it's nothing more than desert. Make it useful. Drill baby drill!!

California is the ONLY US State still importing significant amounts of Middle Eastern Oil - because they will not build a pipeline to Texas. And, rail lines do not have enough tanker cars to move it over the Rockies.
If there is ever a serious disruption in supply - say the Saudi Complex is put out of commission for 6-9 months, California will be dealing with $10 a gallon oil and screaming for a Jones Act exemption so Texas oil can be transported via ship to the Golden State.

I suspect that an injunction may have already been issued by a federal district court judge, and this will stay in the courts for years. I hope to be wrong, but...

This is going to amount to nothing for a long while. We've essentially achieved "independence". There are thousands of wells drilled and left untapped because of the low price of oil in the commodities markets.

2013 when the Lightbringer was into his second term of the destruction of America and helping his mooselimb pals by buying their oil at top dollar. How I miss those days.

So - - here's the real question - - why does the federal government own any land outside the District of Columbia?
Isn't this country called the United STATES - - and shouldn't all land outside DC be controlled by the states?
Isn't this a perfect way to help drain the DC swamp - - by taking away any and all federal claims to land outside DC? Wouldn't this be a great issue for the Pubbies - - if only the Pubbies really wanted to do something worthwhile?
Amazing ain't it - - that no one in the swamp wants to touch this.

California will find a federal judge that Obama appointed to halt this silly idea of energy independence and lower prices for fuel. The keep California miserable campaign is alive and well NIMBY attitude.

Why the pessimism? We have to start somewhere and this gives Green New Dealers something to talk about among themselves. Gas is 4.60 now in California, and there is lots of oil and gas.

Believe California imports about 50% of the oil from Saudi Arabia, which is why gasoline prices are over $4/gallon, except at the ARCO stations which is Alaska oil.
Don't believe CA has any pipelines that would allow for oil to flow into CA from TX, OK or ND.
Trump administration should stop allowing 27 different blends of gasoline, and at least create 1 for all states West of the Mississippi.
This would open up refining capacity and improve efficiencies.
As far as the prospects of more oil production in CA in the Central Valley, it would be helpful and provide California a new revenue stream. Need to start selling this to those local communities and counties on how it will help them pay for schools, roads, police and firefighters. How the good-paying jobs will expand the taxable pie.
