There’s an old saying that wars are easy to get into but hard to get out of. President Trump understands this, which is why he wisely resisted the temptation to launch a military strike against Iran after that nation launched a missile and drone attack last week against Saudi Arabian oil facilities. When he was running for president, Trump promised the American people he would not jump into endless conflicts in the greater Middle East, where thousands of members of the U.S. military have been killed and wounded in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Fighting began in 2001 in Afghanistan and 2003 in Iraq and still continues in both countries.

We have been 'wisely avoiding a devastating war with Iran' since they seized the US embassy and held the staff hostage decades ago. If anything, Iranian national behavior was worsened year after year. Apparently we intend to 'wisely avoid' war until they actually have functional nukes with functional delivery systems.

If the sanctions are working like they are supposed to, Iran may get woke, anyway.

The only "devastating" part would be to Iran. If we can get them to come to heel without blowing a bunch of stuff up, OK, but war is what you do after diplomacy and coercion has failed. We are pretty near there, and they seem to not want to let us just ignore their nasty, destructive, ignorant little country.

The author lays out a possible scenario but you can not simulate crazy. Knocking out the fanatical muslim leadership in Tehran and their "elite" guard could easily bring the country around to becoming a peaceful nation or could just as likely stir up the brainwashed sheep to go all-out to destroy themselves and the countries around them. We could easily turn the entire country into a sea of melted glass but our ridiculous ROE would not permit that so I say stay out altogether. As a business proposition you never win a war even if you WIN a war. We have been proving that since WW2. We saved Europe, we rebuilt Europe but look what we have today, a bunch of whining America-haters who would rather be Communists.

Agreed. Trump is trying to get us out of all these police actions, but the chickenhawks of the Uniparty are blocking his efforts. You would not believe how many of the Uniparty are trying to push this notion that the path to a secure reelection goes down the longer Trump fails to bomb Iran. Oh and they believe that Trump's biggest mistake of his presidency was firing Bolton. There is a strong opposition out there who doesn't mind using our military for cannon fodder while they sit back like overfed poobah's and are entertained by the spectacle. Makes you wonder how many of these poohbah's and others are getting bought off from the military industrial complex.

We have lost too many of our young ones in those useless wars. Now that we are no longer dependent on them for fossil fuels, the countries of the Middle East have to step up and take responsibility for the region. Since the Europeans are dependent on them for oil, it's their turn in the barrel. Trump need to get us out of there in a responsible way.

On the one hand, all of this pacifist and appeasement talk with respect to Iran sounds like the post WW I talk with respect to Hitler.
On the other hand, we are an oil exporter. The damage to Saudi Arabian oil production is damage to a competitor. Their big customer who stands to suffer higher prices and supply disruption is China. Our oil exporters stand to make money. So I'm not sure we should be all that upset.

We can do FAR more damage to them economically with far less risk. Iran made that easier for other countries to support when they attacked Saudi Arabia. Iran probably hoped that Trump would start a war and they could strike back militarily as they are not able to do economically. But Trump refuses to take the bait and tightens his economic grip. Yes, it is hurting the people of Iran but so would a war. In addition, it's hard to show sympathy PR pictures of people being bombed "economically". Trump knows all this and is using our greater strength. We just need some patience as Iran is brought to its knees.
But I also agree with the closing sentiment, if things change and it becomes necessary, "strike with overwhelming force". As with ISIS, the intent should be to ELIMINATE the enemy. That what armed conflicts are for and also why they should be only used as a last resort.

Surrender monkey gotta do what a surrender monkey does. Surrender before "WE" fire our first shot. Iranians have been killing Americans unanswered for 40 years.

No US president is going to enter into a direct war with Iran for any conceivable reason now that we have sufficient oil production to minimize any significant domestic impact. There is simply no practical reason to do so. It is important to note that the recent attacks were not on population or military centers but on large oil facilities with few workers. This restricts the response to something similar, i.e., no blood for oil. As long as Saudi citizens don't feel directly threatened, they will tolerate a tit-for-tat arrangement. Losing a couple weeks oil production and procuring high tech defensive weapons is vastly cheaper than going to war with all its associated unforeseen consequences.

After 40 years the US still maintains hope that this moderate Iranian middle class will revolt and take over government from the theocrats. For 40 years the US has played a dangerous game in the Middle East supporting Israeli territorial and European commerical interests. Over those 40 years we've been involved in four major war engagements and the first of those cost us plenty with little/nothing to show but expanded enmity that led to 9-11 and other attacks.
Meanwhile, the Euros. particularly Germany and France, profit handsomely from Iranian commerce. The Saudis buy our military hardware, have the third-largest military budget on earth, and can't take care of some "revolutionaries" in Yemen. Somehow, in all this, some think the US carries a level of obligation to our "allies." It's a political loser - one doesn't defend democracy in any form in Saudi Arabia, especially after they chopped up Khashoggi and blundered the cover-up. And let's not forget their apparent involvement in 9-11, not to mention their financing of Wahabbism, the most virulent form of Muslimisma, to expand this murderous cult throughout the world.
Maybe Dubya can send Prince Bandar a box of stogies, if anyone can find him.
