Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) great-great-great grandfather Jonathan Crawford served in Major William Lauderdale’s Battalion of Tennessee Volunteer Militia from November 1837 to May 1838, a six month time period during which it fought two battles in Florida against the Seminoles. Today, there are two federally recognized Native American Seminole tribes, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which has 4,000 enrolled members, and the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, which has more than 18,000 enrolled members.

Likely fought the Indians at the behest of Andrew Jackson, father of the Democrat party. Believe most of the "pacts" with the Indians were broken - by Democrats. If you'd like a good read, try American Lion - it's about Andrew Jackson, and the times of the day. You'll read things as they were back then, and see how little has changed.

A University of Tennessee landmark used to pay tribute to a young fan who was bullied was vandalized with an anti-Semitic message on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Newsweek reports. The Rock, a 97.5-ton chunk of Knox dolomite stone located on the Knoxville, Tennessee, campus, is an iconic symbol that's frequently painted by individuals and groups. After fans of the school learned a young boy was bullied for a shirt he made to support the University of Tennessee, they painted his design onto the rock. On Wednesday night, an unidentified person or persons painted over the message of love for the young boy with an anti-Semitic hate message.

Sen. Cory Booker endorsed the proposal set by former Rep. Beto O'Rourke for mandatory confiscation of AR-15s and similar rifles, but said "demagogues" are using fear in describing how it would be carried out. "What’s your view on mandatory gun buybacks or confiscation? And is there a difference?" CNN anchor John Berman asked Booker after Thursday night's Democratic debate. "Well, look. I hate when Democrats use the language that Republicans try to use to scare people away as opposed to the sort of pragmatism and practicality of this," the New Jersey Democrat said on Friday.

Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke, the former congressman from Texas who couldn’t beat Ted Cruz in a U.S. Senate race but who nevertheless believes he can win the presidency, said a curious thing at the Democrats’ third primary debate in Houston on Thursday night. As I say, curious. Who exactly, I wonder, does Beto mean by “we”? A legion of overgrown adolescent 6-foot-4 rich-kids like him, collecting rifles on skateboards? Or does he mean the United States government, under his command? If he intended the latter, then a little history lesson might be in order.

For the past few years, climate-change activism has shifted its focus from the potential dangers of climate change to the present threat of “climate crisis.” If the idea was to scare people into facing the problem squarely, it’s working. But not in the way activists had hoped. Some on the left are so convinced by claims of flood, drought, and fire that they now deem the problem unsolvable. Of course, if all the doomsday tales were actually true, then these climate-change depressives would be dead right. Lucky for all of us, they’ve merely been taken in by a publicity campaign gone wild.

Americans boosted their spending on cars and online purchases in August, supporting economic growth and pushing retail sales higher than economists had expected. Retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 0.4 percent in August from a month earlier, the Commerce Department said Friday. The figures include sales at department stores, restaurants, car dealerships, gas stations, and online shops. Economists had forecast a more modest 0.2 percent gain. The previous month’s gain, boosted in part by Amazon’s Prime Day sales, was revised up to 0.8 percent from 0.7 percent.

The summertime blues are behind us. After plunging in August, U.S. consumer rebounded by more than expected in the first weeks in September, according to data released Friday by the University of Michigan. Consumers felt better about both current conditions and their expectations for the future, according to the preliminary September survey. Economists had expected the University of Michigan’s gauge to bounce to 91 after the August decline to 88. On Friday, however, the reading was 92. The jump in sentiment, combined with a report of strong retail sales in August, indicates that consumers continue to support economic expansion, making a recession much less likely in the year ahead.

Early Monday morning, Donald Trump tweeted: “94% Approval Rating in the Republican Party, a record. Thank you!” Where the president got this specific number remains a mystery. Recent polls by YouGov put his GOP approval roughly ten points lower, and Gallup, which has tracked Trump’s popularity since he took office, puts him at 88 percent. But I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that Trump used his Sharpie to round up his score. He’s deeply invested in being — or at least claiming to be — the most popular Republican president in history.

Good advice. It is a curiosity how a self-declaring Christian can still stand strong on the side of abortion rights. To date, five congressmen from Texas have resigned instead of seeking re-election in 2020. Their resignations signal two things from GOP leadership. The first is the realization that Texas is now lost. The second is that this loss is due entirely to the changing demographics resulting from legal and illegal immigration. The five congressmen that have resigned are Bill Flores (17th), Will Hurd (23rd), Pete Olson (22nd), Kenny Marchant (24th), and Mike Conaway (11th). Of these five, Congressman Conaway is unique in that his district will likely remain red for some time. He has not faced an opponent in numerous election cycles.

When we’re faced with threats of inundation, our reaction has traditionally been to build walls. Sea-level rises, storms and floods have been held back with solid barriers, seawalls and dykes. We have used walls to keep out people, too: the fact that this has failed throughout the ages has not stopped its recent revival in the United States. The climate crisis threatens global sea-level rises of well over half a metre if we fail to act, while tidal storm surges will reach many times that height. Fiercer and more frequent hurricanes will batter us, and millions of people who live in areas where crops have failed
