Tens of thousands of Hong Kong residents, some waving American flags, marched to the U.S. Consulate Sunday, urging Congress to quickly pass legislation providing for U.S. responses to Beijing-instigated rights abuses or attempts to erode the territory’s autonomy. “President Trump, please liberate Hong Kong,” read a large blue banner and numerous posters held by demonstrators, some of whom also sang along to “The Star-Spangled Banner,” piped through loudspeakers. “Resist Beijing! Liberate Hong Kong! Democracy Now!” protesters chanted, alluding to concerns about an erosion of freedoms in the former British colony, which reverted to Chinese rule in 1997 with

I remember when Hong Kong was recognized as the real government of China because the United States refused to recognize the Communist revolution. I don't remember when that changed. Under Nixon?

As flattering as it may seem to see Hong Kong people lauding the United States, this is not a battle the U.S. can fight, nor is it a struggle the Hong Kong people can win in the short term. Hong Kong's fate was sealed with the 1997 handover to Communist China. China communist regime will not tolerate internal opposition indefinitely, and any perception of foreign interference in Hong Kong will only increase the speed and brutality with which this movement is crushed. The worst thing that could happen to Hong Kong would be for mainland movements to rise up in sympathy. The second-worst thing would be for the Hong Kong movement to be perceived as falling under American influence. Either of these will trigger a severe response from Beijing. The Hong Kong people have already achieved significant gains in this confrontation. The best course of action for them would be to de-escalate the demands and demonstrations, consolidate those gains, and prepare for the next round of carefully-calibrated resistance. In the long run, communism cannot win, but they are notoriously sore losers. Like it or not, Hong Kong has to play a long game to protect its autonomy, and its strongest cards are patient perseverance and the abilities of its remarkable people. One day, they may be free, as so many of us hope. But not today, and it is unrealistic to hope and demand otherwise.

Having some fun at the media’s expense, President Trump said Monday night he may have to run for a third term, so he'll still be in the White House when the United States hosts the soccer World Cup in 2026. Addressing supporters at a rally in North Carolina, Trump spoke of his meeting at the White House earlier in the day with Gianni Infantino, president of the world soccer governing body FIFA. The U.S. is set to host the 2026 men’s championship, the largest event in global sports, in conjunction with Canada and Mexico. “We’ve got a problem – it’s in 2026,” Trump said.

“We need a political revolution,” Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) declared on Saturday. In a Twitter post, Rep. Tlaib said America must “completely transform” its political and economic system: “We have to make the tough, courageous changes that completely transform a political and economic system that is now built for corporations (and profits), not people. “Choosing the status quo means doing nothing and giving up. “We need a political revolution.” Tlaib’s tweet was in reply to a Saturday post of an interview she gave The Nation published on June 11 of this year, titled: Rashida Tlaib: There’s a ‘Real Human Impact of Doing Nothing’ This week on Next Left, the outspoken representative who is holding Trump accountable.

By his own admission, the recently fired FBI director James Comey leaked at least four memos of private presidential conversations — at least one of them containing some classified secret material — variously to his lawyers and through liaisons to the press. In both phone calls and personal meetings, Comey never gave any hint to the president he served that he intended to leave a written record of the conversations for what turned out to be his own selfish agenda. Comey said his intent by leaking his versions of these conversations was to force a brouhaha that would in turn prompt

“In some countries working-class groups have proved to be the most nationalistic and jingoistic sector of the population,” wrote the highly esteemed sociologist and political scientist Seymour Martin Lipset — 60 years ago last month. In his seminal article “Democracy and Working-Class Authoritarianism,” which appeared in the August 1959 issue of the American Sociological Review, Lipset observed that many in the working class were “in the forefront of the struggle against equal rights for minority groups, and have sought to limit immigration or to impose racial standards in countries with open immigration.”

In addition to Maddow, OANN is suing MSNBC, Comcast Corporation and NBC Universal for defamation. Maddow based her claims on a Daily Beast report alleging that OANN’s Kristian Rouz is a “Russian national on the payroll of the Kremlin’s official propaganda outlet, Sputnik.” After pointing out that President Trump has promoted OANN because he likes it better than Fox News, Maddow exclaimed, “we literally learned today that the outlet

Bruce Deitrick Price in a recent article at quora.com perceptively noted that “teachers understand a lot less about what’s going on in their own classrooms than you might imagine.” He adds that the Education Establishment has “done a great job of making everything so murky that nobody understands what is going on.” Murky is a synonym for “shadowy” such as the shadows on the wall in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave in Book VII of The Republic. The murkiness is premised on the belief that educational outcomes can be produced, even mass produced, independent of the commitment or natural abilities of the student.

In earlier, more tender times, it was assumed that adults pretty much ran the world with precision based on knowledge and moral rectitude. Sure, there was evil and there were bad people, but it was recognized and they were consigned to outlier status as aberrations. Humphrey Bogart, Clint Eastwood, or Iron Man would pretty much clean things up in a couple of hours. In simpler times the evil were exposed and paid for their sins. But times and values have changed in the new postmodern America. For many, truth and what’s right are no longer universal standards but instead what they’re made to be, and particularly
Climate Changing for the Better 0 replies

The idea that climate change is a negative thing, an unnatural thing, and an inevitably destructive thing predominates in our society. In truth, climate change and carbon emissions have overwhelmingly positive effects. CO2 is incredibly good for plant growth. Plants see significant improvement in growth with higher CO2 levels. Greenhouses commonly increase CO2 levels to 1,500 ppm and the temperature to 80 F or higher. For comparison, atmospheric CO2 levels are a bit above 400 ppm, and the average surface temperature on earth in 59 F. CO2 also increases photosynthesis. The production of carbohydrates increases as CO2 increases.

House Democrats expanding their sprawling investigations into the Trump administration are battling more than White House stonewalling — they’re also racing against the clock. The Judiciary Committee this week will vote to adopt new rules designed to power their ongoing probes, as the panel weighs whether to introduce articles of impeachment against President Trump. But as Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) is revving up the committee’s operations, some Democrats say party leaders should aim to wrap up the process by year’s end — or risk a political backlash at the polls in 2020.

The morning after the 2016 election was not the first time feminists awoke devastated and bewildered by election results. Three days after Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential victory, this headline ran in the New York Times: “Feminists Dismayed by the Election and Unsure of What the Future Holds.” In the story, George McGovern, the former Democratic presidential nominee who had just lost his Senate seat, blamed anti-feminist sentiment for the titanic Republican wave: “People were reluctant to come right out and admit they wanted to put women in their place, but there was a strong current of that running through much of what happened.”

President Donald Trump knows why he wants his border wall painted black—but on Monday, it seemed like that information had yet to trickle down to the rest of his administration as U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan appeared to struggle to explain why he supports the U.S. leader's decision. Asked during a White House press conference whether he has any objections to Trump's dictum to paint the roughly 450 miles of border wall black, even if it means having to forgo a few miles of wall to cover the cost, Morgan made clear that he did not. The acting CBP chief said he thinks it is "common sense" that

It's the first time the aquarium has had a non-binary animal, which comes four months after same-sex gentoo parents, Rocky and Marama, acquired the offspring.
