An American Airlines mechanic was arrested Thursday on a sabotage charge accusing him of disabling a navigation system on a flight with 150 people aboard before it was scheduled to take off from Miami International Airport earlier this summer.
The reason, according to a criminal complaint affidavit filed in Miami federal court: Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, a veteran employee, was upset over stalled union contract negotiations. (Snip) As a result, flight No. 2834 was aborted and taken out of service for routine maintenance at America’s hangar at MIA, which is when the tampering with the ADM system was discovered during an inspection.

I am not comfortable with a guy named Abdul working on aircraft. Sorry if I sound prejudiced but too many Abduls and Mohammeds have tried to harm America, especially with planes. I, too, am not buying the union negotiations story.

Do they go through TSA, the long line, every day they come to work? That would make us all feel safer. I have TSA Pre and all it required was a simple background check. I have a co-worker who flew from point A to point B with a paring knife in her purse. I had a bar of soap in my luggage, and my luggage was pulled for extra examination. If I use body butter before a flight, I get frisked by the mentally weaponized TSA. How often are background checks run on airport staff? We got TSA because our ever loving government didn't want to profile the Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alanis of this world. So, we're all treated like terrorists to protect the hurt feelings of those most likely to be terrorists or know someone who is a terrorist. Then, when the Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alanis are caught doing terrorist-type stuff, we blame workplace violence or union negotiations.

The private-jet-using-elites will now call for the following regulations on public jets: less than .5 oz. of fluid total in carry-on luggage, mandatory frisks of all white octogenarians and babies, removal of underwire bras for all white women with greater than B cup sizes and private gathering spaces for all Muslims to “pray” while at American airports.

Typical religion of piecer (misspelling deliberate). Don’t like something, kill a bunch of innocent people.
AA, along with their lousy service and surly attitudes, needs to review their HR policies, re: diversity.
Thank God for the vigilance of the pilot.

Really misleading headline by El Herald. Makes it sound like they spotted a major problem at 120 knots and did a high-speed abort, hot brakes, etc.
Are we that hard up for mechanics that we need to have an Abdul working on our aircraft? Sorry for any prejudice, but merely learning from experience.

Yes, above posters. Airport personnel, pilots and flight crews have to go through TSA security, but they have their own line.
This guy didn’t need to worry about going through TSA - his job already provided him with the tools to sabotage the plane. No Muslim should be working in any capacity at all in any US airport, but GW Bush was too gutless to make that happen.
If you’ve ever flown out of Washington Dulles with any regularity, you’ve probably had your ID checked by a woman in a hijab and long black robe. I can’t tell you how many times that has happened to me and it puts my normally very low blood pressure through the roof.

Good news: The preflight checks by pilots caught the problem and sent plane to maintenance. Bad news: I don't believe for a moment that a mechanic with the name, Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, intentionally sabotage the navigation system because of prolonged labor talks. TSA needs to be turned over to private sector. Bueller?
