The suspect who allegedly shot six Philadelphia police officers and holed up inside a building for hours has been taken into custody, according to the police department. The department said the man was in custody and a SWAT team was clearing the house just after midnight Thursday. The resolution ended a day marked by frightening violence caught live by overhead helicopters in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Tioga-Nicetown as the man fired wildly at police officers, who were seen diving for cover behind cruisers and evacuating injured comrades. Maurice Hill, 34, has been identified as the suspect, according to his lawyer and law enforcement sources. Hill surrendered peacefully to police,

New York Times chief outlines coverage shift:
From Trump-Russia to Trump racism

Dean Baquet, the executive editor of the New York Times, said recently that, after the Mueller report, the paper has to shift the focus of its coverage from the Trump-Russia affair to the president's alleged racism. "We built our newsroom to cover one story, and we did it truly well," Baquet said. "Now we have to regroup, and shift resources and emphasis to take on a different story." Baquet made the remarks at an employee town hall Monday. A recording was leaked to Slate, which published a transcript Thursday. In the beginning of the Trump administration, the Times geared up to cover the Russia affair, Baquet explained.
The End of Hong Kong as We Know It 16 replies

The protests in Hong Kong have been going on for more than four months now, and no matter how the current crisis concludes in the coming days or weeks, it will mark the end of Hong Kong as we know it. The protests started in response to an extradition bill that was proposed by the city’s Beijing-backed chief executive, Carrie Lam, in February. Hong Kongers rightfully feared that should the extradition bill become law, the city would be forced to turn over to China anyone President Xi Jinping’s regime deems a “criminal,” including human-rights activists, political dissidents, and others who pose a threat

One of the inevitable outcomes of the Russia case will be that the Department of Justice (DOJ) almost certainly will need internal reforms. The first reform is the most obvious, given the unraveling of the Russia collusion narrative: a new set of rules governing when the FBI can investigate or spy on a First Amendment-protected political campaign during an election. The FBI never should have been allowed to sustain a counterintelligence investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign based on hearsay from Australian diplomat Alexander Downer, who helped to arrange a $25 million Australian government donation to the Clinton Foundation, and on a “minimally” verified dossier written by British spy Christopher Steele,

After first saying they would waive their anti-BDS law and allow Reps Omar and Tlaib into the country, Israel changed its mind today and decided to ban them from coming into the country on Sunday. In 2017 the Knesset passed an anti-BDS law that blocks foreign BDS activists from gaining entry to Israel as the BDS movement is not only anti-Semitic but calls for the destruction of the Jewish State of Israel. Note: If anyone needs a refresher on BDS and why it is anti-Semitic, it’s explained in this article. Interior Minister Aryeh Deri who made the decision said: “The state of Israel respects the American Congress

On Wednesday, former Google employee Zachary Vorhies went public as the whistleblower who spoke with Project Veritas in June, revealing the political bias in Google's "Machine Learning Fairness" program. He also told the story of police storming his home to perform a "wellness check" after he was outed as a "leaker" and after Google had sent him a demand letter. Project Veritas released its video with Vorhies (whose identity was masked), exposing the bias in the "Machine Learning Fairness" program and its hidden camera interview footage showing a Google executive describing her work on algorithms to prevent "the next Trump situation." Shortly afterward, the whistleblower received a demand letter from Google.

When the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was revealed in July, GM President Mark Reuss said it would start at “under $60,000.” Well, it does. Just. Chevy announced Thursday that the new mid-engine supercar will have a base price of $59,995 for an 1LT model, including delivery. That’s just $3,000 more than the outgoing front-engine car. The Stingray will be available in three trims that offer increasing levels of equipment, with the 2LT priced at $67,295 and the 3LT $71,945. A Z51 performance package that adds an updated suspension, tires, bodywork and other equipment costs $5,000 and a hydraulic nose-lift to avoid scraping the front of the car on inclines is $1,495.

Conspiracy theories are flying regarding the death of well-connected sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, flourishing on social media under hashtags including #ClintonBodyCount and #TrumpBodyCount. When more sober commentators point out that there is, in fact, something suspicious about Epstein’s death, scolds reprimand any such questions as “irresponsible.” Any conversation about irresponsibility here, though, ought to start elsewhere: with those in the ruling class of this country who allowed this whole travesty to occur. As to why so many people don’t trust the authorities who tell them Epstein killed himself, just consider the Epstein saga. It starts with a man with no apparent virtues or skills, who easily bought the favor of our power elite.

There really was a collusion plot. It really did target our election system. It absolutely sought to usurp our capacity for self-determination. It was just not the collusion you’ve been told about for nearly three years. It was not “Donald Trump’s collusion with Russia.” Here is the real collusion scheme: In 2016, the incumbent Democratic administration of President Barack Obama put the awesome powers of the United States government’s law-enforcement and intelligence apparatus in the service of the Hillary Rodham Clinton presidential campaign, the Democratic party, and the progressive Beltway establishment. This scheme had two parts: Plan A, the objective; and Plan B,

It has long since become commonplace for the Democrats and the media to misrepresent any and all policies proposed by the Trump administration, but the blizzard of balderdash that greeted the so-called “green card rule” has been over the top even by left-wing standards. From the moment acting Citizenship and Immigration Services director Ken Cuccinelli announced it on Monday, the public charge regulation — which merely implements two bipartisan statutes passed in the 1990s — has been mischaracterized as a reversal of the nation’s historical immigration philosophy, a racist conspiracy, and a plot to favor rich immigrants over their poor counterparts. All too typical of the nonsense

First thing this morning, Taylor looked at the shooting that took place at the ICE offices in San Antonio. While we can all be grateful that nobody was injured (though someone apparently missed taking a headshot by a matter of inches), I wanted to circle around and hit a couple more details. The first thing to note is that they took a suspect into custody earlier, but later cleared the person of any involvement and released them. Perhaps more interesting (and valuable) is the evaluation of these events from San Antonio Field Office Director Daniel Bible. (KENS News) ICE ERO San Antonio Field Office Director Daniel Bible

With each passing day, Hong Kong is moving dangerously closer to a bloody explosion. America can no longer wait: It’s time to make unmistakably clear that it stands with those demanding freedom and democracy for the region. Since June, demonstrators have taken to the streets in unfathomable numbers — as high as 2 million by some estimates. That’s an astonishing share of Hong Kong’s entire population of 7.4 million. In recent days, protesters camped out at the region’s international airport, forcing the cancellation of more than 200 flights. They used force to hold two men thought to be infiltrators, triggering police and setting off violence. And all this despite well-grounded

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez offered her opinion on whether President Trump's supporters are racist during an interview with Crooked Media's Pod Save America podcast. "First of all, the biggest mistake that we have — and it's a trap that gets set by the Right, whether intentionally or unintentionally — is just the frame of asking, 'Is blank racist?'" the New York Democrat explained, arguing the conversation needs to be about racism itself, not the people who ascribe to it. "Like all winning political phenomena ... they rely on coalition building," she continued.

An autopsy has now found, the Washington Post reports, that Epstein "sustained multiple breaks in his neck bones, according to two people familiar with the findings." Police say Melvin Harris, 40, admitted to beating Leon Armstrong, 26, to death after he attempted to break into the teenage girl's stall at a QuikTrip convenience store bathroom. Harris was waiting for his daughter and her two friends in the store’s parking lot when Armstrong approached his car asking for money. Harris gave him change, then Armstrong walked into the convenience store, police said. Soon after, Harris' daughter and her friends came out of the store and said the man had harassed them, according to a police report.
