Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren unveiled a proposal to guarantee universal high-speed internet access on Wednesday as part of a new plan to invest in rural communities. “I will make sure every home in America has a fiber broadband connection at a price families can afford,” the senator from Massachusetts wrote in a post on the blogging platform Medium. “That means publicly-owned and operated networks — and no giant [internet service providers] running away with taxpayer dollars.” Warren said she would create a federal Office of Broadband Access to manage an $85 billion grant program. The grants would be awarded

$85 Billion for high speed internet? It shouldn't be anywhere near that expensive, even if for every American. Somebody is planning to skim from those loans and grants.
Ask the mayor of Baltimore what I might mean. He was given about $2. Billion to fund public works. Now, they can't quite figure out what happened to all that money.

So people in the middle of the forest in Alaska or middle of the desert in Arizona, miles and miles from any infrastructure are going to be guaranteed government internet at affordable prices? Once again I need to ask, why do I need to pay for other peoples life choices? If one chooses to live far from where services are available, it is not everyone else's responsibility to make sure get services. Internet is not a right.

Aren't we already paying for this with a tax on all our phone lines, going back to a brilliant idea from genius Al Gore?

If there's government money involved there will be government control.

So good old Fauxahontas gets to decide who gets what internet? Just what I want to hear. The government making all your choices for you, ain't that just grand? Only if you are an idiot and can't make decisions for yourself. Hey, Chief dumber than dirt, we are adults we will handle our own affairs if you would just stay out of the way and stop putting your fingers on the scales.

This isn't an issue the government has any business getting into. Besides, aren't we already paying a so called service fee every month to provide internet access for schools? I think internet access is in every school in the country now, but we're still paying this stupid fee. It's a tax that won't go away even after the purpose of the fee has been fulfilled. I could get a faster internet connection if I wanted to, but it would cost a ridiculous amount of money every month. So I choose not to have it. These politicians think everyone out there has an unlimited amount of money to give away to them.

Since when did "access" become to mean free stuff paid for by your fellow citizens who are working hard to pay for their own stuff?

Musk is already working on a project that will give everybody internet access. It won't cost the taxpayers anything. But Warren isn't dumb. The liberal thing is to grant the money out and get campaign contributions back. Waste of taxpayer money. I would bet her plan would control who gets the grants.

Sounds like a new version of the U.S. Postal Service, and once government is involved, it comes with strings.
And, it NEVER goes away, but ends up as an on-going government program, just ask the Rural Electrification Department that's still around from the 1930's - believe most of the United States has had electricity for decades, but the program still receives regular funding.

What #5 said. There’s maybe 15 houses in a 5 square mile area where I live. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have high speed internet but that 85 billion isn’t nearly enough. My wireless internet provided by a small company is good enough for me.

Posters 9-21, :o) we don't need a billion dollars. We can tape a bunch of metal parts together, place her inside, and just push our beautiful rocket over a really high cliff overlooking a very rocky ocean. That should get her to the moon real cheap.
