The 22-year-old granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy died Thursday at the fabled political family's compound in Hyannisport, Mass., the family said in a statement.
Saoirse Kennedy Hill was the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill, (Snip)"My depression took root in the beginning of my middle school years and will be with me for the rest of my life," she wrote. (Snip)
She added that "someone I knew and loved broke serious sexual boundaries with me," leading her to pretend the incident hadn't happened and attempting suicide.

Very strange name, sometimes you wonder if that has a stressing effect on people.
The Kennedys have been having problems with drugs, alcohol and mental illness for 3 or 4 generations.

I'll say a prayer for her. I suspect she was self medicating.

OP, in her essay for her school newspaper, it sounds as though her depression started as a young child and she was later assaulted in her high school years. I think many depressed young women self medicate with alcohol and are susceptible to being assaulted (but that's just my non-M.D. opinion). #2, Saoirse is an Irish name, pronounced "Sur-shuh." Her father is Irish.

At what point do the offspring stop being considered Kennedys? She was a Hill. If she had a daughter who married a Smith, would that child still be called a Kennedy?

#5, I think they stop being Kennedys when they stop acting like Kennedys. Still another one with drug issues. One screwed up family.

She tells of being a happy young child. Her depression started at the beginning of her middle school years. That would be age 12-13. The person who "broke sexual boundaries with her" was someone she "knew and loved". That carries a pretty heavy load as it could also be a family member … or an extended family member?

about when the kennedy offspring will stop being called kennedys, I see a time when politicians will take DNA tests to "prove" they have at least 1:1024th lineage to the kennedy tribe.

Did she ever meet BJC?

Whatever her family, it is always sad when a young person dies, and even worse when mental illness is involved because it is so often ignored or stigmatized. She did show courage about her own illness and that is a good thing. Unfortunately it was not enough to sustain her, and that is very sad for the people who loved her, and all of us really.

She had a weird name. I have read the article a couple of times. It reads like she was 22 years old and still in high school. (Now that's depressing)
Why are the ones born with a silver spoon in their mouths always the crazy ones?
Oh-well, RIP...for the "Kennedy Curse" lives on even if most Kennedy's do not.

I agree with #10. I didn’t know this young woman so had no way of knowing whether she had “drug issues” or not. That someone might choose a drug OD as a means to end their life does not neessarily mean that they had “drug issues”. Her mother and dad legally separated when she was only 9. An only child, she was sent to a coed boarding school for high school. As another poster noted, it was there that she was “assaulted” by a friend. It was also there that she felt isolated because of her depression. That is what depression can do.
A beautiful young woman. No one is reporting anything negative about her. I am sorry she couldn’t find her way out of her illness.

Sympathy to the family. Parents aren't supposed to bury their children. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, even the Kennedys.

#12, IMO parents who send kids off to boarding school do not really love their children, they see them as a pain in the neck, to be gotten clear of by hiring somebody to take care of them.
Finding that she was sent to a boarding school saddens me, because IMO that qualifies as child abuse.

Actually #1 that is a very common Irish name. One thing I will say for the Kennedy's is that they always stuck up for their Irish heritage. Having said this, I am sorry to hear that she may have been the victim of molestation. One thing I am learning from watching the reality crime shows, is that philandering, abusive behavior, and promiscuity have a tendency to lead to death on some level. Whether it is a family unit, an innocent spouse, children or relatives. Something or someone always dies. This is why God frowns so deeply on all forms of sexual impropriety. It is devastating to His children.
RIP little lady. I am sorry you had to deal with this horrible theft of your childhood.

A lot of self-pitying verbiage about "depression" was written by this young woman.
Too bad she didn't give herself long enough to grow out of her juvenile self-preoccupation.

With the history of mental illness in this family, you'd think the Kennedy's would have a phalanx of psychiatrists on speed dial. Joseph Kennedy's legacy on down to his children's children's children. It is a tragedy for this young woman that she was born into that family. Whenever I hear these stories about the girls of the terribly rich and famous, I always remember Edie Sedgewick of Warhol's Factory. I read George Plimpton's book, Edie, and it has haunted me since my 20's.

#15, you lack wisdom.
We sent our daughter to a residential performing arts (ballet) school in Canada when she was 14. To do otherwise would have limited the development of her God given talents.
She is now 30 years old, and is developing her skills as an actress. You might have seen her in a TV series. She also models.
Don't make sweeping generalizations. It is unbecoming, and wrong.

Thank you #4. I was wondering how to pronounce her name. I heard it on the news a couple of times and I think they just kind of 'slid' over it.

#18, I, too, am familiar with the Edie Sedgwick story. There is a movie about her life called Factory Girl. It stars Sienna Miller as Edie Sedgwick & Guy Pearce as Andy Warhol. It’s quite well done, although difficult to watch. Guy Pearce is amazing.

This young woman was no Warhol girl. Except for the depression - which can have many causes - she was active in school, an avid soccer player, active in what we would call SJW pursuits, close to her family (even though it was a split family which included a stepmother). Depression is often due to an imbalance in the brain’s chemistry, an imbalance that has nothing to do with recreational drugs. In my opinion, this kind of analysis is far, far beyond our pay grade...

Very sad. There are no winners here. I pray she has eternal peace. This has happened to many families without a famous last name. It's not national news for them. This was somebody's little girl and loved by her family. Condolences to them. When did we get so mean?
