A leader in the Christian purity movement has announced he is "falling away" from Christianity and says he regrets his teachings on dating and sexuality. Joshua Harris, who first came to notice when he wrote I Kissed Dating Goodbye as a 21-year-old, also shared that he and his wife, Shannon, are splitting up and "will continue our life together as friends." "I have undergone a massive shift in regard to my faith in Jesus," Harris wrote Friday in an Instagram post. "The popular phrase for this is 'deconstruction,' the biblical phrase is 'falling away'. Bet he's been hiding in the closet for years. Not a change - an admission. Can't wait to meet his boyfriend.

I don’t know what a “Purity expert” is, but i doubt a self marketed “purity expert” actually ever was one.

He was never a Christian with that kind of confession. He only played the role, acting the right way and saying all the right words, but never was the real thing. God makes the Christian. Man has no part in making himself a believer. It is strictly by faith.

And giving all of his I’ll-gotten proceeds from books he sold but now disavows to Christian Charities? No? Wonder if a class action law suit would help him decide.

I can understand how a bad marriage can make any man feel like there is no God. I just think he took it a little to the extreme.

I read a lot of stories lately (sometimes twice) and I have no idea what's going on. Every day seems to be sillier and more absurd than the last. It's a shame these people can't channel this energy into something useful

Pray for his relationship with Jesus to heal and that he regain stability on his journey of faith. Throwing stones at him now is probably one of the worst ways to promote a healthy and happy outcome. If you're holding a stone right now, throw it at the media, instead.

I never believe these types. None of it - the initial "purity" or the "conversion" or the "re-conversion" or whatever. Fickle and obsessed with self, it's just all about selling the next book.

Josh seems sorry for the hurt he has caused and is causing. That is a good characteristic.
He also is being honest, with himself and with the world. This too is good.
Wise words spoken to me once, ironically, by Josh's father were to the effect that the "christian world" is full of people who don't truly believe in the resurrection. We go to movies and see talking cars or talking animals and we suspend our disbelief for the duration. He said that the church is full of people who have suspended their disbelief. Which is not even close to the same thing as real belief. Perhaps in time, Josh will encounter the resurrected Jesus.

John 6:66-68 New International Version (NIV). 66 "From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 “'You do not want to leave too, do you?' Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." Obviously Josh thought there was somewhere else to go. Good luck with that, Josh.

Hey, they didn't build the church for the sinless. I remember visiting with a Pastor in Dallas and complimenting him on his refurbished church. I told him, hey, if you did this for the sinless, you bought way too many chairs. To which he replied, "And one too many pulpits."

Nobody's business but I'm interested in these things having gone through something semi-similar.
Never heard of 'deconstruction' in these terms and I've never fancied myself fallen away despite what some peeps close to me allege.
Same path as ever. Paths are funny; even Bilbo knew this.
As I said this is nobody's business but he seems intent on making it everyone's business, which is a clue right there.
My advice would be get ready for a bumpy ride and don't be shocked when few really give a damn about what you're thinking about. Why should they? You're not the first kid to figure out a tricycle.
And keep sex out of it, yo. Yours and everyone else's. People are burning out on that hustle.
"Purity expert." Heh... That's a good one.

The popular phrase is 'deconstruction, the biblical phrase is 'falling away', and the most discriptive phrase is 'going to hell!'

The other Biblical phrase is apostasy. I have never heard of this false prophet, but I do know that the Bible continually warns against them.

I thought "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" was silly hype when it came out, and still think so. But I'm sorry for his wife and children, and for him, too. May he finally find Christ at the end of his searching.

The Apostle Paul went through a similar conversion, albeit in the other direction.
Before he started his new ministry Paul sequestered himself, shut his big mouth and studied the scriptures for a few years until he got his head on straight. I recommend that Mr. Harris do the same.
I doubt that he will. Too much money to be made right now.

Is it possible this guy was living a particular kind of Christian faith -- but not the only kind? I know plenty of Christians who aren't against women, don't treat gays like dirt, etc. I don't want to judge ultra-conservative Christians, especially those who are kind. But you can believe in Jesus -- you can hold to "one holy catholic [little c] and apostolic church" and the beliefs summarized in the creed; you can have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ -- and still have questions about faith.
This guy sound like he's gone from the deep end of one pool to the deep end of another. I feel sorry for him.

Guessing Josh Harris found it too difficult to follow his own 'purity' standards. Christianity is about forgiveness, not following all the rules. By God's standards, no human being can follow all of his rules. Only God's grace can change a person. Hopefully, Josh Harris makes his peace with God. God will still welcome him.

There Christian "Doctrine of Eternal Security," is summed up by the Lord Jesus Christ in John 10:28, which quotes Him, "I give to them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand."
if Joshua, says he did something to lose his perfect salvation, he contradicts the Lord Jesus Christ, and is screwed up on something much more critical than boy-girl relationships.

It is called wimping out. It is easy to be a Christian when everything is going right for you. The real test is handling adversity and trusting God to be there for you.
