LONDON — Britain's Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt warned Iran of "serious consequences" if it does not release a British-flagged oil tanker it seized in the strategic Strait of Hormuz waterway on Friday, although he ruled out "military options." Hunt announced later in a tweet that he had spoken with Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and "expressed extreme disappointment" that Iran had "behaved in the opposite way" of trying to deescalate the situation. The seizing of the "Stena Impero" potentially marks the most significant escalation in tensions between Iran and the West since they began rising in May,

Whatever happened to the concept that an individual, or a company, or 'a country' had a right and an obligation to 'protect' their property, family members, employees - and so on - and defend them against those who aggressively indicate their intention to harm, capture or destroy? It's a frightening and puzzling 'new world' we're now living in.

Are those serious consequences anything like Mr. Obama's red line in the Syrian sand?

I don’t think at the Theresa May led government in the UK has the guts or the wherewithal to bring on serious consequences against Iran. The Mullahs there only respect force, and currently the UK has very little force anymore on the high seas, as they have reduced the once proud Royal Navy to the status of a coast guard. Back during the days of Admiral Lord Nelson if any country like Iran had seized a British ship in international waters, Nelson would not have even called London for instructions, but would have sailed to the sound of the guns and would have retrieved the ship. The May Government incompetence is certainly evidenced by their failure to effectively warn British flagged ships to stay out of those waters near Iran unless they were being escorted by a British warship.

Alaric the Goth before Rome moment. Guess what, Britons now are slaves. Ruling out military consequences mean there will be no consequences.
Bombing the Iranian oil terminals would be an appropriate response. Making the Strait a no-fly zone and requiring Iranian shi[\ps and boats to remain in their own territorial waters for the next six months would solve these problems.

What are they going to do, cut back on the number of illegal Iranian immigrants they let in the country and put on welfare?

Can you imagine the Muslim EXPLOSION in London and elsewhere if Britain lifts a finger to recover its property. I don't think they will risk it.

Hmm. They could sail down their one and only mini-aircraft carrier with up to 6 or 7 aircraft and that would terrify the Iranians.....maybe.

Since they've ruled out military options, are they promising to send another sternly worded letter if Iran does it again?

Who knew Iran had a helicopter and troops that could rappel down to sieze a ship??? Perhaps ships should now be armed with stinger missles as well as small arms...how about .50 machine guns and grenade launchers.???? This crap has got to stop...

Unfortunately the Royal Navy is a shadow of it's former self. They have a total of 13 frigates and six guided missile destroyers on their active list. I presume that some are in the yard at any point in time undergoing overhaul, so maybe 10-11 frigates available, plus a few guided missile destroyers. And they are scattered around the world in various places.
The Brits could send a couple of them down to the Strait if they wanted to, but in addition the being nearly bereft of capability, they are pretty much bereft of political spine. And, as has been pointed out, they are heavily infiltrated by Muslims.

Yeah, the shipping companies should take on the Iranian military...how will that end? Arm foreign flagged ships with international crews with Stingers and other lethal weapons...how will that end? The US has no interest in this. This is a Brit/Euro problem. Let them wallow in it.

I say, old chap, this simply won't do. Unhand our vessel at once or we shall be very, very put out.

Britain warning Iran of serious consequences means they will ask for our help - you know, where we put up troops, military might, and fund the action, while Britain sends a token show of force. This is like the little brother starting a fight with the big bully and then calling on his big brother to save his neck. We have been sucked into these Euro battles too many times, so, no thanks, Lucy.
We have no need to get involved in this. We have all the oil we need and enough to export. If Britain wants oil they can buy from us. Britain has not been a good friend.

Time to put well armed SAS and Navy Seals on tankers to prevent this garbage. Small boats and helicopters can't match our hand-held defensive munitions.
