Berkeley became the first city nationwide to ban the use of natural gas in new low-rise residential buildings in a unanimous vote Tuesday by the City Council. The ordinance, introduced by Councilwoman Kate Harrison, goes into effect Jan. 1, 2020, and phases out the use of natural gas by requiring all new single-family homes, town homes and small apartment buildings to have electric infrastructure. After its passage, Harrison thanked the community and her colleagues “for making Berkeley the first city in California and the United States to prohibit natural gas infrastructure in new buildings.” The city will include commercial buildings

gas is used to HEAT homes..
i don't think this matters much in Kalifornia where it never gets cold..
in the Republik of Minnedishu the cost of heating a home with electricity would
probably be four times as much as using natural gas..

A city full of vegans? Yeah, good luck outlawing gas.

Basic thermo here...electricity use for heat/cooking consumes 3x the fossil fuel that nat gas use requires

They're just trading CO2 emissions for increased powerline EMF fields inside the homes. And putting more load on CA's already overburdened power grid.

Not really educated in this field... but don't we need coal to get electricity?
If so, it seems natural gas is the better alternative.

I enjoy the monthly royalty checks I get for my share in natural gas wells in Kansas.

This is insane. I can just see all the gourmet cooks in Berkeley going nuts if this ban also applies to kitchen remodels. Really good cooks far prefer gas stoves and ovens...

You can ALWAYS count on Berkeley to do the OPPOSITE of what is sensible, economic and sane.
ALWAYS.

Brilliant! So, now gas-fired electric plants will burn more to generate the electricity required.
There are big losses in electricity transmission and almost none with gas.

Having California is like having an experimental crazy liberal ideas laboratory so the rest of us can watch the (predictable) outcome. Living in Berkeley just got way more expensive.

I wonder how many brown-outs we'll see this year. I wonder if Kalifornia can force Nevada to sell them electricity.

What are they planning to bottle up all the gas coming from the politicians and use it? Kind of like that picture of a cow with a methane collector strapped to it...or they could collect all the feces in the streets and compost it to create methane...

Funny they should mention Adeline Corridor and South Shattuck. There’s a huge homeless tent camp there. I wonder if the urban campers will be allowed to use propane stoves.

What do they think the electrical generators run on?

So all the commercial buildings will be what? Solar? Maybe they should take a look at what happened to that "state of the art" Solar Meat packing plant in NJ when there was a fire. You see folks, solar panels on your roof mean live electricity that cannot be turned of with a switch, so therefore it is impossible to fight a fire in your big building because you cannot go onto the roof and you certainly cannot pour water on it. You do know what happens when you try pouring water on live electricity right? Look it up. These people are beyond stupid.

Exactly #2! I happen to live in Minnedishu (nice!), not in the cities thank goodness, and I am already outraged at my electric bill. It was $40/month 18 years ago and now is $200-$400 thanks to the liberal enviro-whack jobs running the place. It might not sound like much to someone living in CA though. It just wouldn't work here, they also have their war on clean coal. People will be freezing to death.
