The numbers that come out of the 2020 census will be challenged heavily by both sides, especially if there is any statistical legerdemain involved. The idea of the census is to count, not to estimate, and that will be the nub of the fight. Democrats will argue undercounting; Republicans overcounting - both screaming they deserve better. States like Calilfornia will have the most to lose numerically; small states will have relatively the most to lose if their delegations are cut from four, let's say, to three as a result. And then there is the question of who counts...

You know those earnest but tedious Sunday morning talk shows that you don’t watch anymore? Well, more people are also not watching. New data from the Pew Research Center and even later numbers from Nielsen show total viewership for the four major network shows — NBC’s Meet the Press, Fox News Sunday, CBS’ Face the Nation and ABC’s This Week — continued their viewership decline last year, only by a slightly larger number. [Snip] However, the Fox program was the only one of the four to

Two planets in our galaxy are inhabited. One is Earth, where humans have made a mess of things for quite a few centuries. The other is Mars, which is totally inhabited by robots, driving, drilling, listening, sampling their way around that sandy wasteland. The desolation on Mars, they believe, might shed light on the origins of life on Earth. [Snip] There are new indications that humans — at least the American kind — are entering one of their irregular cycles of restless curiosity about space and the lethal mysteries that lurk there. We had one back

You’ve probably heard a lot about President Trump backing down on trying to get a citizenship question on the census questionnaire next year. Perhaps you too were surprised that this president who takes on even meaningless slights or disagreements on Twitter would give up so easily. He didn’t. The rest of the day’s story is somewhat different: Trump says he’s devised another path to the same information, which isn’t certain to be tied up for months with

I first “met” Ross Perot on the telephone at work one morning in early 1990. “Mr. Malcolm?” said the voice in a clipped Texas twang that would become familiar to the nation in two later presidential campaigns. “This Ross Perot.” I looked around the newsroom to see which colleague was pranking me. “Mr. Malcolm, listen,” he ordered. “I read your article about the service members who died in Panama. God bless them.” [Snip] I knew none of this when we had the first of what would become several long phone conversations. He asked they be off the record and since I had no

For his entire political career of nearly a half-century Joe Biden has cultivated an image of Middle Class Joe from Scranton, the kind of guy who rides the train to work like millions of other workers. To scrape up extra income, Biden even charged the Secret Service rent on a cottage agents used while protecting him in Delaware, That middle-class schtick is probably not gonna work so well anymore. For his first two years out of the federal government, Joe Biden reported earnings of nearly $16 million. That’s about $21,369

The 2020 election is shaping up arguably as the most fascinating presidential selection event in modern history. Republicans are going with an incumbent whose post-inaugural job approval until last weekend has never exceeded 46%. Democrats overwhelmingly say their top issue is ousting Donald Trump. But two dozen of their wannabe nominees have raced far from the electable center of the political spectrum to argue instead over a smorgasbord of trillion-dollar freebies. [Snip] While a majority of Americans tell pollsters they definitely will not vote for Trump, a majority say they believe he will be reelected. How does that work? For that matter,

Now, we may know exactly why President Trump is vowing so often that the United States will never embrace socialism: That polls really well among Republicans, like more than eight-out-of-ten well, including nearly two-thirds of whom have a very negative view of that system. The president will need every single one of those GOP votes to go with him on Election Day in just 70 weeks to overcome his chronic deficit in job approval. And the same new poll by

Last time Donald Trump ran for president, he was an upstart, outsider, unlikely to win, who put some $66 million of his own into that successful unorthodox campaign. This time is different, very different. He’s an incumbent commander-in-chief with no real challengers and the Republican National Committee is fully on his side. So, it seems, are a lot of small donors. It shows. While media ooh and aah over the $24.8 million collected in the second quarter by Pete Buttigieg, the Trump campaign and the RNC took in $105 million — $54 million from the

This is one of those shadowy war mysteries with a backstory that belongs in a Richard Ludlum novel. We’ll never know the true inside story. But it’s interesting nonetheless. You may recall back in 2011 as Barack Obama was heading out of the White House one day to take his mother-in-law along on a South American tour, he dropped the news that oh, by the way, he’d ordered U.S. air forces to help European allies oust Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi. He launched this multi-month offensive without congressional approval. Gadhafi’s crime (actually, it hadn’t happened yet) was he threatened to

Swoosh! Nike, the big shoemaker, seems to have a new boss. For America’s Independence Day, Nike released a new sneaker shoe style with the image of the early U.S. flag stitched by the notorious revolutionary Betsy Ross. It had the familiar red and white stripes and 13 stars in a circle for the original colonies. Apparently, sales were going well until noted kneeler Colin Kaepernick objected because, well, some of the 13 colonies had slaves at the time and we shouldn’t be knowing that in this Woke era. Naturally, the mega-company with $36 billion in annual shoe and

Approaching its 243rd birthday, the United States has a proud and widely-admired political tradition of freedom and generally democratic elections of its own leadership. Thanks to voters’ brief episodic attention spans and earnest but shallow media coverage that treats a leadership choice like some marathon Kentucky Derby, the United States has a presidential selection process that’s a mess.[Snip] We saw much of this made painfully clear during and after the first pair of Democratic primary debates. TV relishes such set-piece events, like old-fashioned shootouts down by the corral. We know when it will be. Where it will be. Who

It’s déjà vu all over again. President Trump has given the hanging party a first-rate piece of rope to use against him. His tweet will not live in infamy, but his cringe-worthy “go back” language rhymes with many of his earlier self-inflicted mistakes. The pattern was established during the 2016 campaign and he has been faithful to it many times since taking office. It always seems to happen when things are going pretty well. So it was Sunday, with Democrats engulfed in a vicious civil war and Trump’s poll numbers rising against the 2020 candidates as the public begins to realize how far left they are goin

"I may run again but that's not why I speak out." "I'll be honest with you," he continues, "I dislike getting asked every day to comment on the latest Trump-crisis.

An open letter to Barack Obama: Mr. President, it is time. You must speak. Your country needs you. Eleven summers ago, as you accepted the Democratic nomination for president, you announced: “Tonight, I say to the people of America, to Democrats and Republicans and independents across this great land: Enough. This moment — this election — is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive.” Of course, we knew then that our nation had deep political differences, and would continue to. Only the most naive among us would have expected the election of the first African American president to come about with no backlash. But would anyone have anticipated

In a blog post, Domenico Bettinelli wrote, "Facebook has repeatedly banned a quote from St. Augustine every time I’ve posted it. And it’s not some fire and brimstone 'Sinners are going to hell!' quote, but in fact, quite the opposite." Pulled from one of St. Augustine's homilies included in the Roman Catholic Church's official liturgical books, the offending quote is this:

Berkeley became the first city nationwide to ban the use of natural gas in new low-rise residential buildings in a unanimous vote Tuesday by the City Council. The ordinance, introduced by Councilwoman Kate Harrison, goes into effect Jan. 1, 2020, and phases out the use of natural gas by requiring all new single-family homes, town homes and small apartment buildings to have electric infrastructure. After its passage, Harrison thanked the community and her colleagues “for making Berkeley the first city in California and the United States to prohibit natural gas infrastructure in new buildings.” The city will include commercial buildings

Teddy killed the 28-year-old “girl,” as he called her, and he was allowed to plead guilty to … leaving the scene of an accident. Not vehicular homicide, or drunk driving, or reckless driving, or

In the new nation that Democratic Rep. How can we know this? She has declared it in writing. Omar's campaign website includes a section called "Ilhan's Vision." The agenda it presents contradicts foundational American principles — particularly the rights to life and property — that were spelt out in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The declaration says that "all men are created equal" and "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights."
