Have you ever wondered why dishwashers today take twice as long to do a worse job of cleaning dishes? Or why it’s so much harder to get gasoline out of a new gas can? Or why cars made decades ago always turn heads, while today’s are drab in the same way?
There’s a simple answer to these modern-day mysteries: Government regulators.
Take the dishwasher. Earlier this month, the Department of Energy announced that it would revise its rules regarding dishwasher efficiency. Why? Because the existing rules — which set limits on how much electricity and water a dishwasher may use — are forcing manufacturers to build machines that are worse than ever.

It is now impossible to fill the tank in my lawnmower without spilling gas. Whoever came up with this idea needs to be pilloried in the public square.

Agree #1. Fortunately, I kept my old gas cans and use those instead of the new ones.

When the free market determines the will of the people every consumer or potential has an equal vote. When government decides what is best an infinitesimal minority can dictate to everybody.
There is nothing more equality based than the free market, one person one vote as a provider of what they chose to, do and a consumer.

The current gas cans are horrible, nearly completely unusuable, and result is A LOT more spilled gas. Fortunately, I have 5 old, high grade, simple Rubbermaid/Gott 5 gallon cans that are in good shape and are taken care of very carefully, since you can't get them any more.
Evil government, ruining everything they touch.

Today's dishwashers are mostly adequate IF you managed to stash away a load of the phosphate-laden detergent that was banned about 10 years ago. We pretty much have a lifetime supply. :)

I had old gas cans that I tossed. Later, I needed new ones and bought four five gallon. They have the new EPA regulation spouts. OMG! What a freaking unusable contraption of springs and slides and slots. I paid $23.00 each for these plastic cans! I immediately went to work on those stiff, hard to use spouts and cut the springs out, tossed the guts, this left an open 1/2" slot 2/3 the way down the spout. I had to use heat shrink to close that slot, and now have this stiff, cumbersome but workable spout that spills gas every time I use it. But, I tried four ways to Sunday to use that spring loaded, self venting, self closing haul of BS the EPA decided was THE Spout to save the planet! Who designed it and decided it was workable must be an office idiot who never poured an ounce of gasoline into a tank in his or (probably) her life. Their alternate motive must have been to stop people from using portable gasoline cans! Like Ronald Reagan said, the most terrifying words a free citizen will ever hear is, "We are from the government and we are here to help you."

Those gas cans are everything from stupid to dangerous. Take a half-
full can from the garage into the sun and and in short time it becomes
pressurized. In refilling my 2 cycle leaf blower I got sprayed in the face
with oily gas.

I paid more money than I should have for a new gas can after my old plastic one sprung a leak. Unfortunately, I threw the spout away too. The new one has this contraption built in that doesn't work! I can't get gas through it. I thought it was me, but now I see it's a nightmare brought about by some idiot tree-huggers. I've had to resort to using a funnel every time with the result my tank overflows on the ground. All these bureaucrats need to be sent packing.

I hope no one has to buy a new washing machine either. Restrictions on water levels and amounts leave clothes soiled and insufficiently rinsed. Soap and fabric softener remains. and the only way to get it out is to run another cycle. Real intelligent regulations, right?

I reached the little ole lady stage a few years back...........I cannot fill my lawnmower using the "new" gas cans. Nothing like feeling really really old and pretty useless when you have to find a teenager to fill the gas can on a lawn mower.

The other way they ruin cars is by mandating insanely uneconomic levels of fuel economy. Now many cars are being forced to switch to a turbocharged engine - which adds in a $1000 turbocharger, plust intercooler (extra radiator) and lots of large diameter plumbing to and from it. And a wastegate to control the pressure.
All this costs a bunch of money, and most of these pieces will NOT make it to the normal life of the engine, so you will be paying big $$ for premature failures if you keep your car for many years.

The link in the article to the replacement spout kit is brilliant! I have made my own. I have to siphon diesel into my tractor though.
There is another problem with the new dishwashers. We used to use it to gather dirty dishes for a few days before washing so there would be a full load. The new one does not clean the dried on food well so it needs to be run right away. This means it runs more often mostly empty. We wash dishes by hand, using more water.
Toilets get to be flushed two or three times.
Shower heads get modified.
Anyone still use those ridiculous twisty fluorescent light bulbs? When one goes bad we would never put another one back. What a mistake those were. The eight track tapes of the lighting industry.

I really like my tall tub style dishwasher and if I ever have to get another, that is what I will get. As to washing machines, do not under ANY circumstances get one with the impeller style tub. Get one with an agitator. The impeller is an HE machine, and is the worst scam foisted on the public in a long time. Had to replace my impeller HE after almost two decades recently and daughter convinced me to go back to an agitator model. Not only do the cycles wind up being faster, I get a full tub of water, the loads stay balanced and are less wrinkly coming out of the machine.
I could not believe how dingy the HE impeller style machine leaves clothes. My machine is a Maytag Commercial grade machine with knobs and no push buttons except to start the thing. I will never EVER go back to the impeller HE style machine. I have been able to do laundry that my old machine could not handle on its best day. It is not worth it, and I love having extra time back in my life again. So take my advice, do not go for the HE impeller style. You will regret it.

After my one year old NEW whirpool washing machine went out. I found an early 1980's series, yellow Sears washing machine for free on Craigslist! My dryer was already the same series and has worked great for 20 years. The new machine that broke, locked when started it, did not allow you soak clothes and never drained very well. It was digital, which was horrible and went out several times. The worst feature was the lock. If you found some socks or a towel, you could not stop the cycle and drop it in. Love the old Sears series. I still have old gas cans. I did not even know about the new ones.
I will be hanging onto those.

Re: washing machines. We've been there, done that recently. The only real washers out there right now are the Maytag Commercial and the Speed Queen Commercial. We went with the Queen. Pricey, but worth it.
