Just a trial run for when NYC switches over to turbines and solar energy. But seriously, 40,000 have lost power and they act like King Kong is back in town. Towns and cities all across America lose their power to tornadoes, floods, snowstorms, hurricanes and other natural disasters and mechanical problems and I don't see those situations flashed across the TV.

One transformer fire causes a "massive" power outage. Typical journalistic hyperbole.

The huge disruption in much of Manhattan this evening is the result of one electric transformer fire that is now being called a “major disturbance”. Can you imagine the great and long-term harm that would be caused in a big city like NYC if the Islamists sometime in the future get ahold of an Iranian produced nuclear weapon, hide it on a container ship, and detonate it while the ship is in a US harbor knocking out all that city’s infrastructure and power for months or years?

A. I hope everyone keeps a cool head about themselves. B. Out here in the sticks, power outages are common. Many have generators, certainly every public service building has one. C. Guess you are going to have to put your phone down and actually TALK to one another. :)

One of my ultimate nightmares is to be trapped in an elevator as a result of the power going out, and not knowing if and when it's going to come back on. This is the main reason why I avoid them. I've been known to climb 10 flights of stairs to attend an appointment rather than use the elevator.

I would not like to be caught in a stalled elevator in a real high rise (10 stories are nothingburgers) in a power outage. In other words, in pitch black darkness. Ditto the subway. Stalled. In darkness. Ditto all the underground parking structures. In the dark. This isn’t Kansas, Toto!!!

#9, there isn't a single logical reason such a building couldn't add a $20k generator to the building for e-lighting, elevators, and communications. Out here in flyover it's quite common. Not to mention the server farms out this way (and yours too!). While I feel for the folks involved, perhaps spend less on glitz and more on infrastructure.

I’m so old that I remember when George Will’s opinion mattered to Republicans. Apparently, the Bezos Bulletin scribe realizes he’s lost his influence on the Grand Old Party and now offers advice to the Democrats on their nominee, in hopes that someone out there still cares about his opinions. His disgust at President Trump – who has the support of roughly 90% of Republicans – is such that he has now taken to telling (fellow?) Democrats whom they should nominate in 2020, in order to defeat the man who has restored the American economy to growth rates exceeding population growth ( a task his predecessor assured us required a “magic wand”),

In a news conference last Thursday, President Trump and A.G. In explaining his determination, Trump said: This information is also relevant to administering our elections. Some states may want to draw state and local legislative districts based upon the voter-eligible population.

The report features highlighted cases, including ones where the arrests were for rape, murder, assault, burglary, car theft, drug possession, and DUI.

In two essays, “Illness as Metaphor” in 1978 and “AIDS and Its Metaphors” in 1988, the critic Susan Sontag observed that you can learn a lot about a society from the metaphors it uses to describe disease. She also suggested that disease itself can serve as a metaphor—a reflection of the society through which it travels. In other words, the way certain illnesses spread reveals something not just about a nation’s physiological health but also about its cultural and political health. For instance, AIDS would not have ravaged America as fully as it did without institutionalized homophobia, which inclined many Americans to see the disease as retribution for gay sex.
