An extensive blackout struck Manhattan on Saturday night as power was lost in Midtown, Hells Kitchen and the Upper West Side. Street lights were reported knocked out on Columbus Ave. on the Upper West Side, and a power outage was also reported in Rockefeller Center around 7 p.m. “We are responding to extensive outages on the west side of Manhattan,” said Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin. “It’s equipment issues, and we are working to restore customers,” Clendenin said. More than 42,000 Con Ed customers had lost electricity by around 8 p.m. Clendenin didn’t know how long the power might be out.

So a fraction of a percent of New Yorkers are affected, and it is "extensive". Get real.

These New Yorker's are the same people who complain about oil burning power plants.
I bet now they can't wait to get there power back on....

40,000 is hardly a "massive" power outage. Get a grip. The press is getting hysterical about everything. One transformer goes out and you repair it and voila back to normal. You would think the entire island was in darkness. This is absolute proof that you cannot trust the press to report on anything in a reliable and sensible way. Anyone who knows about outages knows that these numbers are minimal and the power should be back on in a matter of hours. Unless they cannot get a replacement transformer or parts in which case it may take a day. Meanwhile keep calm and carry on

Here in Arizona, I refer to APS as our "third world power system". Outages never make the news they are so common. If you vote for a dem in NY and the green new deal, get used to it.

They wallow in darkness of their ignorance. Electric supply has little to do with it.

Meanwhile, FoxNews is breathlessly covering it-saying the same thing over and over and over again for a solid hour.

Losing power ain't fun...especially if you're very old, very young, or very sick. Or trying to run a business.
So best of luck, guys. Hope the lights come on soon.

A hint to our enemy. They'll know where to hit to create chaos and panic in our country. With every passing year, the population of America has stopped becoming RESOURCEFUL. Consequences of DUMBING down society.

I would think walking through the subway tunnels would be pretty dark since there is no juice for the lighting there.

Totally agree with #6. The breathless cable news coverage of this on Fox is over the top and ridiculous. Get a flashlight out for pete’s sake and quit whining.

We had an ice storm in Raleigh, NC, in 2003, and many lost power for days. Yankee from New York in my apartment building kept complaining that power outages didn't happen in NYC, and how they wouldn't stand for it if it did. I'd love to ask Ms. Yankee-face where's the ice? I know she took herself back to NY, since we country bumpkins were so backwards with our power outages from a freaking ICE storm. What a silly woman, I thought at the time.

Was midtown and the upper west side of Manhattan forced by de Blasio and Cuomo to only get electricity from solar and wind mills? Wouldn't surprise me. I call it karma.

Update: all power restored by midnight so the "massive" armageddon power outage lasted a total of 5 hours and a maximum number of 72,000 customers were affected. Let's see 8 million live in NYC so less than 1%, less than 5 hours and actually more like 4 for most. Sad that these oh so sophisticated brilliant New Yorkers cannot deal with a little reality once in awhile.

this was pathetic - a mere 5 hours w/o power and according to national news it was an emergency of the first order. meanwhile tens of thousands had been without power in Louisiana all day - with prospect of flooding, hurricane etc. L A went without power for days after 1994 earthquake. wimpsville - NYC is - and obviously verrrrrrrry ill-prepared.

Just another day in New York. Poor babies! I live in a rural area. Power outages are fairly common. I love my back up generator.

Interesting coincidence that it was on the anniversary of the big New York black out on 7/13/77.
Interesting coincidence that it was on the weekend of the ICE round up.
I'm like Joe Kenda - I don't believe in coincidences.

Between a blackout and reported shortages of natural gas due to city regulation, New Yorkers should be getting very edgy about now. When do they start burning their furniture?

Good news! It's been fixed!
An emergency supply of windmills - - stored in lower Manhattan from the Dutch settler days - - has been installed throughout the city - - solving the electricity generation problem with the latest 17th-century technology. Volunteer crews of social justice warriors are waving their arms furiously in order to keep the windmills spinning.
There is never a shortage of innovative thinking in leftist-run cities.

CUOMO somehow will get rich off this. Is the GOLD storage area within the blacked out areas?
Think Bruce Willis...and KNOW that these people are far too UN-CREATIVE to even change the plot line.
Then think hollywood...what ever happened to a "NEW BLOCKBUSTER"? Like the dems in the Russian hoax, hollywood is ONLY doing 'do overs'.

I live in a rural area about 65 miles North of New Orleans. After Katrina, we went without power for a little over a month. It was during the hottest month of the year, the government confiscated all the gas, whenever a station could go on line temporarily. You had to drive 30 to 60 miles to fill up as many jerrycans as you could, so you could run a small generator to try to save your food. We grilled a lot. I vowed never again, and now a back-up generator and a full tank of propane await every outage.I'm with poster #20.
