Last fall, as the House impeachment wave was building, I asked a gathering of 10 friends what they thought of President Trump’s prospects. Only six were Trump voters in 2016, but the group was unanimous on two points: The president would not be convicted by the Senate and would be re-elected in 2020.
Because the world has been turned upside down since then, I wanted an update from the same group. All successful New Yorkers, they are active in business, philanthropy and politically astute.

Americans do not consider the leading contenders for the Democrat presidential nomination to be very religious, reveals a new survey from the Pew Research Center.
Asked how they view the religiosity of four of the top contenders — Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren — fewer than ten percent said they see any of these as “very religious,” Pew found.
Just three percent said that Elizabeth Warren is very religious, while four percent said the same of Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg (despite the latter’s frequent Bible quoting). The largest portion (nine percent) of Americans view Joe Biden as very religious.

Is Andrew McCabe off the hook? Don't count on it. The former FBI deputy director has been one of the central figures in the various anti-Trump coup plots that have unfolded over the last four years. He was well placed to do it, serving as deputy director 2016-2018, and briefly as acting director in 2017. He had means, motive and opportunity to abuse his power to the hilt.
McCabe’s downfall was rapid. He stepped down from the deputy directorship in January 2018, ahead of findings from the DOJ Office of the Inspector General that he “lacked candor,” a.k.a lied, to investigators...

A former top Treasury Department official pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy for leaking confidential banking reports associated with members of the Trump campaign, following her dramatic arrest in October 2018 as she toted a flash drive full of sensitive documents. Natalie Edwards, 41, entered the plea in Manhattan federal court, where U.S. District Judge Gregory H. Woods set sentencing for June 9. Although the conspiracy charge carried a potential penalty of up to five years in prison, Edwards signed a plea deal with prosecutors that recommended a potential prison sentence of zero to six months.

Donald Trump's decision to assassinate Qassem Soleimani has triggered a major rupture between the United States and its historically closest ally in the United Kingdom. In remarkably outspoken comments, UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said on Sunday that Trump's isolationist foreign policy stance meant the UK was now looking for alternative allies around the world.
"I worry if the United States withdraws from its leadership around the world," he told the Sunday Times.

Lanell McGee James and her husband were traveling to Dallas to say goodbye to his deceased brother when they were stopped on the highway for a “non-speeding violation.” But, in a very nonstandard act of compassion, Trooper Bates took a moment to pray with the couple before sending them on their way. The gesture so touched them that James posted the story to social media, where it has been shared over 85,000 times.

The comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello did a routine about baseball that is a cult favorite.
In it, they kept batting back and forth the question, “Who’s on First?” “What” was on second and “I Don’t Know” was on third. “I Don’t Give a Darn” was shortstop.
“Who’s On First” was a humorous and outlandish exchange between the two comics.
As the routine went, so politics goes today. President Trump labels any Republican who questions his erratic and narcissistic style as a RINO (Republican In Name Only).

Can 20 U.S. senators withstand the potentially irresistible temptation to reverse the results of the 2016 election and remove a president a number of them openly or privately dislike?
Since Donald Trump announced his intention to run for the White House on June 16, 2015, many of the entrenched elites across the various power centers of Washington and beyond have spent many of their waking hours trying to stop or unseat him.

A couple of years ago, I was interviewing a former senior White House official when the name Jeffrey Epstein came up.
Unaware of my personal history with Epstein, this person assured me that the New York financier was no serious harm to anyone. He was a good guy. A charming guy. Useful, too. He knew a lot of rich Arabs, including the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, and, further, he had clever ideas about creating bond issues for them. “OK, so he has a girl problem,” this person threw on, almost as an afterthought.

High-level support and almost three-quarters of a million dollars in donations poured in Sunday for the German captain of a migrant rescue ship who was arrested after she defied repeated orders to stay out of Italy and struck a police boat while bringing 40 people to port.
...
"We ask the German president to keep busy with what's happening in Germany and possibly invite his fellow citizens to avoid breaking Italian laws, risking the killing of Italy's law enforcement forces," Salvini said in a tweet Sunday evening.
