U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Wednesday evening that her girlfriend—WNBA and UConn legend Sue Bird—told her that she needs to slow her roll because left-wing activists are “going to ask you to run for president.” While leading the women’s soccer team to its fourth World Cup, Rapinoe emerged as one of the symbols of the anti-Trump resistance by refusing to put her hand over her heart and sing the national anthem.

Please run, there are a lot of people who would donate to your campaign, and I can't think of anyone else better for donors to waste their money on than a 1) anti-American 2) hateful 3) man-hating Lesbian with zero experience in politics who has already turned off at least half of the voters in the United States. As if there aren't enough hateful anti-Americans already in the running.

What is she going to run on? Anger and bitterness? You need something more positive and palpable than petty negative emotions to succeed. Just because you can kick a ball on a field doesn't mean you can lead. I suspect she's being exploited by the mainstream media and she's in turn exploiting this to feed her melodramatic sense of self-importance.

In a way, I can’t blame those who grew up in the Cold War for being pessimistic about the future. We lived then in an age of potential nuclear annihilation and Hollywood made sure that we knew about what would happen if it occurred. The studios rolled out film after film of post-apocalyptic dystopian worlds from Planet of the Apes to Soylent Green. These films were usually shot in vast desert areas in foreign countries because the truth is that America is still very, very beautiful.

America is a providential nation, chosen by God always to be a beacon of freedom and hope. In the freedom and opportunity it offers its citizens and in the example it offers to other nations, America is that "city upon a hill" envisioned by John Winthrop, first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. By that, he meant that the pilgrim colony in New England, standing proudly as if on a hill, would be a model of goodness and right living for all to see. America is still that city upon a hill, but our future is less certain.

In 1958 Eugene Burdick and William Lederer published The Ugly American. The book was written to expose the failure of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Southeast Asia. The American diplomatic corps were boorishly indifferent to local language, customs, and culture. The book caused quite a stir in the waning days of Eisenhower’s administration, and Kennedy used it as springboard to launching the Peace Corps.(snip). A mysterious change seems to come over Americans when they go to a foreign land. They isolate themselves socially. They live pretentiously. They are loud and ostentatious."

There have now been five national polls since the first Democratic presidential primary debate. Together, the surveys, conducted by ABC News/Washington Post, Quinnipiac, CNN, The Hill/Harris, and Politico/Morning Consult, show the debate has shaken up the race. The field has separated into three clearly definable tiers, all atop a large group at the bottom made up of candidates with virtually no support. Within the first tier -- Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and Elizabeth Warren -- the leaders' positions are rapidly shifting. Since the debate, only one of the four -- Harris -- is up, while Biden, Sanders, and Warren are down.
