Tropical Storm Barry presents New Orleans with an unprecedented problem, according to the National Weather Service. The Mississippi River, which is usually at 6 to 8 feet in midsummer in the Big Easy, is now at 16 feet, owing to record flooding that's taken place this year all along the waterway. In the meantime, Barry is spinning away in the Gulf of Mexico, threatening a storm surge of 2 to 3 feet at the mouth of the river, said Jeffrey Graschel, a hydrologist with the weather service's Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center in Slidell, Louisiana. Quick. Bring back Ray Nagin and Kathleen Blanco. They will know what to do. And don't forget William "Cold Cash" Jefferson.

Live in NOLA. Preparing for the worse. Seen the Bonnet Carrie and Lake Pontchartrain interacting this evening. Wind and lake are pushing river overflood back towards river. Wonder if this will be a new problem unforseen. We shall see. Sorry, don't beleive a word reported in this. I just can't beleive CNN.

Never seen before problem? Hardly, what you never see is a Sewarge and Water Board crew shoveling out the catch basins, and running a vacuum truck to clear the lines. New Orleans hasn’t done this since the feds did it for them after Katrina. I live in Jefferson Parish and I got 6 inches of water a couple of days ago and I was dry as a bone. Jefferson Parish has crews that clean out storm drains year round, has vacuum trucks and mechanics that can work on them and fix them when they go down. Guess what political party runs Jefferson Parish? Guessing what political party runs Orleans Parish?

Current weather radar shows a few moderate rain squalls in the Gulf. Did this whole storm just break up and go away, leaving just a few rain storms?

I live in Jefferson Parish, having moved here two years ago. This is my third hurricane season here, and I rely on Bob Breck's blog to keep me informed. The local stations as well as the weather channel people are alarmists. The national hurricane center's website shows New Orleans to be outside of the cone of uncertainty. Most local weather stations show the city to be well within it. This does not mean we will not have problems, as we will still be on the wet side of the storm, but geez, the locals need to give it a rest for a minute.

At Essence Festival here on Saturday, they wore matching T-shirts, and pink-and-green beaded necklaces to represent AKA’s signature colors. As soon as Harris acknowledged their presence and support, they cheered loudly and belted, “Skee-wee!”—the sorority’s high-pitched trademark greeting. The scene unfolded at Spotify’s “Are & Be” venue, where Harris sat down with me for a wide-ranging podcast interview that will air July 15. Although she is often described as cautious and

Starting Sunday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is expected to resume its previously announced plan to apprehend thousands of illegal immigrants across the country. The reinvigorated effort comes just weeks after President Trump tweeted that ICE was preparing to kick off days of raids in at least 10 major cities. The operation was halted, however, the day before it was set to start, to give Congress time to arrive at a legislative solution on immigration. Trump said his administration would relaunch the raids after a two-week window – after the Independence Day observance – and that time now seems to have arrived.
