– A retired jockey died when she fell onto an eco-friendly metal drinking straw which impaled her eye, an inquest heard.
Elena Struthers-Gardner, 60, who was known as ‘Lena,’ suffered brain injuries in the accident at her home in Broadstone.
She was carrying a mason-jar style drinking glass with a screw-top lid in her kitchen when she collapsed. The 10-inch stainless steel straw entered her left eye socket and pierced her brain.

A horrible way to die. I pray she had no way of seeing it coming. What a freak accident!

If it hadn't been impalement on a metal straw it would have been a fatal infection from an improperly disinfected reusable straw. Then they'll say disinfecting reusable straws harms the environment and so does using paper straws.
You can't spell environmentalist without mental.

Seemed like a good idea at the time, but tubes (even plastic straws) are very strong in compression and, done properly, would probably drive that metal straw through a cinder block.

freak accidents occur, blaming it on global warming advocates is as stupid as the global warming advocates are stupid blaming everything on global warming.

Think about what things you have in your hands and lap when you are in a car, too. If the airbag fires, whatever you have in front of your chest and face will be very forcefully slammed into you by the inflating airbag. I have thought that some of these stainless thermal cups would be a deadly weapon if you were taking a drink when the airbag fired. A metal straw....similar to a dagger, potentially.
A foam cup and a plastic straw is pretty safe. But of course, the left is all insane about it. I miss the really nice styrofoam cups that McDonald's used to have. They didn't get all wet from condensation, the drink stayed cold longer and they were sturdier than the pathetic replacements.
No metal straws - definitely dangerous. I wonder if they are legal to take on a plane? Would TSA confiscate them?

So sad.
When my sister and I were small, Dad made drinking straws for us out of green onion tops. Fun for kids. Just don't use one to drink milk.

Revenge of the Plastic Straws. This could be a horror movie title. The first death from trying to save the environment and people have to die. I blame the left and California for this. My wife uses those horrible metal straws and they, like your water pipes in your house, build up nasty deposits if you don't keep the clean.

This is why I prefer my bendy plastic straws if I use a straw. The sticks from some of the candies of the 60's through the 90's weren't exactly user friendly either. Impalement via the roof of your mouth isn't a fun way to spend an afternoon at the ER either.

That little boy's bogus "study" of plastic straw use started this anti-straw panic.
Someone needs to keep publishing the debunking of his "study" until people calm back down.
This is as ridiculous and un-necessary as those over-priced silicon straws that come with a "cleaner" and purse carrier for way too much money.

I'm sure Federal safety standards for straws will soon be published. Mothers Against Almost Everything and advocates for the elderly will see to that. Buckle up for safety!

You KNOW there is nothing wrong with bendy-straws except that children love them. What we really need is those old asbestos ceiling tiles in the school lunchroom. Straws and spit balls were their only known enemies.

Since these are hazardous to people's health, I have an idea: Maybe we should ban metal straws and start making them out of plastic!
