Shortly before the Fourth of July, The New York Times published an op-ed attacking air conditioning as unnecessary, contributing to global warming, and oppressive. Taylor Lorenz, a staff writer at The Atlantic took up the call, calling air conditioning itself "unhealthy, bad, miserable, and sexist." She called for a ban on air conditioning in general, and the internet rushed to defend the technology. "Air-conditioning is unhealthy, bad, miserable, and sexist. I can’t explain how many times I’ve gotten sick over the summer b/c of overzealous AC in offices," Lorenz tweeted, adding "ban A/C."[tweet] The New York Times's Penelope Green begins her article

Then put on a bloody sweater! I'm not giving up my AC just so some chirpy little chippy can feel good about herself and return us to the days of rampant malaria.

What a stupid twit! Air conditioning does not make you sick. You get a cold when a cold virus enters your respiratory tract, whether it's 30 degrees or 90 degrees. It amazes me how many otherwise intelligent people don't "get" that.

You first NY Slimes, you first. When I see the cranes removing the air conditioning units from the high rise office complex that you call home then I might, MIGHT consider it but not until YOU take the lead. When every single NY Slime office is without air-conditioning that would be quite the example to follow. Some how I don't see that happening. So never mind.

It seems like all of the wacky, lunatic ideas and most of the America haters are women. Ever since women left their husbands, had children without marriage or a stable partner, and joined the workforce, they complain about everything. The craziest amongst us are yelling for open borders, free everything and a world without gender or responsibility. Does anyone believe that the mess this country is in will be solved by women??

One thing: having air-conditioners is why we are in such a political mess in D.C. In days before AC, Congress recessed during the summers to avoid the nasty humid heat notorious for that low-lying piece of land. With AC, Congress now sits comfortably year-round, creating all kinds of legislative mischief.

Years ago the federal government outlawed the refrigerant Freon and replaced it with a much more expensive refrigerant and I understand that that refrigerant has been outlawed and been replaced with an even more expensive refrigerant that has to operate at a much higher pressure. The cost of installing central air in a home has gone up exponentially as a result. I have often wondered if the ultimate goal was to make AC cost prohibitive for people in the middle class and below so only the elite can even afford it.

To echo #’s 10 and 12...come on down here to the South Carolina Low Country where the heat index has been about 108 - 115 degrees for most of the last month. Our HVAC system got a leak in it last week and lost all of the coolant. It cost $550 just to replace the coolant, not to mention almost $3,000 to find the leak, replace the leaking element and repair the system.

I grew up without air-conditioning in the South, and because of financial reasons turned it off one summer 13 years ago. Yipes! If I thought I would never have it again I would gladly move to Northern California, earthquakes, fires and lousy politics, still better then the steaming high humidity of the South. I have relatives in MI and Canada, but cold freezing weather is almost as bad-almost.

I live in Kentucky. Today the high is supposed to be in the lower 90's with 80+ percent humidity. I grew up with no air conditioning and there were days when I was miserable. Later we got a window unit and it made one room bearable. Now, I am grateful for my AC. I keep it at about 77 which is fine for me and if I find myself in a place where I know the AC is set to blast freeze, I put on my sweater. Easy peasy.

O'Neil mentions the great Willis Carrier, inventor of the air conditioner. Yes, Mr. carrier was one of the most significant inventors in human history, and there should be abundant statues in his honor. I don't know what intellectual virus has infected the NYT, but it's fatal to reasoning faculties. These people are nuts. Two years ago my A/C went out for four days--parts had to be rush ordered--and I took pictures of the temperature gauge in my bedroom on the West Coast of Florida. The third night, the mercury reached 88.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Believe me, you cannot sleep in such an environment, pouring sweat all night long. Radical Greens really do want to take modern life away from us. In return, we should make certain that their political power is permanently removed, and that they become cautionary tales for future generations. Tell your grandchildren: "Gore's not only completely wrong about everything--he's going to hell for earth worship and bearing false witness. Do you want to go with him?"

No one I knew in Texas had air conditioning in my growing up years. We kept the windows open and hoped for a breeze. In ranch country, there is always a breeze, but it is usually full of sand. In high school, one of my friends had a '57 Ford station wagon. Brand new and AIR-CONDITIONED! Goodbye to arriving at the movies with sweaty hair. About the same time, my parents bought a window unit for the house. It was installed in the dining room window and my father took his daily naps on the floor right in front of it. I assume no one at the NYT ever experienced life before air-conditioning. Give doing without it a try, guys, before you decide the rest of our nation should sacrifice it.

Air conditioning is unhealthy and sexist? Really? Try sitting in sweltering heat with high humidity. That can be very unhealthy. You can overheat and get heat exhaustion or heat stroke. That is particularly true amongst older folks and ill people. And sexist? Why does every complaint these days have to be classified as "racist" or "sexist"? Taylor Lorenz needs to grow the hell up. It's time to move from diapers to big girl panties, Taylor. You make a mockery of what it means to be a woman and a true feminist.

Back in the Carter days, when the government decreed that all office thermostats would be set to miserably high degrees, the wife and I had occasion to visit a federal office building in downtown New Orleans in the middle of July. Temp was about 95 and humidity was in the 80s. The office thermostat, right near the doorway of an interior office, was set at the mandated temperature. A clamp light was clamped onto the adjacent doorway frame, with the lightbulb inches away from the thermostat, and you could have hung meat in that room. The A/C never cycled off. We're looking at another day in a week of 105+ heat index days today, here in South Louisiana, and my house is a comfortable 77. We used to have rolling blackouts in the summer, and after one particularly hot shutdown of about 5 hours, we installed a standby, back-up generator. It won't happen again.

My take from the article and its comments is that everybody is different. A nice March day in Florida is just as pleasant as a nice March day in Pennsylvania. Other months, not so much. Just because you have an air conditioner doesn't mean that you have to keep it set at 68 like many people do, 74 is just as comfortable, probably more. For decades jackets and ties were mandatory for work apparel for men while women could wear sleeveless blouses. Yep, that was sexist but men were the victims. No, you do not NEED air conditioning to survive but you don't NEED shoes either, it's just more comfortable.

Since AC has become widespread buildings are no longer designed to lessen the effects of hot weather. No more big high windows, fans etc. to help cool them. It was 97 F in Atlanta last week. Can you imagine trying to work in a cube farm office. The temperature would sky into the hundreds and would be near lethal to the office workers. We need to thank Mr Carrier every day here in the South.

Perhaps the most historic, in the sense of era-defining, moment in the history of the Academy Awards was that standing ovation Roman Polanski got when he was given Best Director honors in 2003. There they are, leading Hollywood liberals, leaping to their feet to cheer for a man who, at age 43, gave a 13-year-old girl Quaaludes for the purpose of having sex with her and sodomizing her. Polanski suffered in no significant way for his crime, and today it seems obvious he should at the very least be denied the highest honor his profession can bestow. In 2018, Polanski (along with Bill Cosby) was expelled from the Academy

California’s uncanny “earthquake pause” is over. It should have already had several “big ones” by now. All that pressure has to go somewhere. Wow! How insulting. Is Pelosi saying that only white people count as citizens? Jeffrey Epstein’s arrest on federal charges of sex trafficking minors has all the features of a tabloid extravaganza: money, sex, power, and serious crimes. No one deserves the notoriety more. The billionaire financier was already convicted of similar crimes in 2008 and received a very light sentence. Epstein’s plea bargain ended the earlier investigation before any of his friends were implicated. That won’t happen again. The floodlights are on this one. In 2008, the prosecution negotiated the plea deal while it kept victims in the dark. The underage girls Epstein exploited were not notified in advance about the agreement or allowed to object.
