From the Mustang to the minivan, auto
legend Lee Iacocca is dead at 94

Lido Anthony Iacocca, the automobile industry legend best known as “Lee,” died at the age of 94 on Tuesday morning, his family confirmed. A child of Italian immigrants who grow up in humble conditions, Iacocca became one of the most powerful — and best known — executives in Detroit. Iacocca rose to become president of Ford Motor in December 1970. After being fired in a dispute with company heir Henry Ford II, Iacocca joined the then-struggling Chrysler. Using both his business skills and ability to turn a phrase, he won federal loan guarantees that helped the automaker avoid a potential 1980 bankruptcy.

Comments:

A true American success story. Mr. Iacocca never forgot his humble roots.

Iacocca was the consummate “car guy” - he spent his whole life in that business. He birthed the Mustang, and the very forgettable K-car, but he’ll be most remembered for the minivan, which changed the buying habits of millions of families. Another one of his feats was buying Jeep, for about ten cents on the dollar, and turning it around. When he retired from Chrysler, they had all-new product lines, all-new factories, and their stock price was up. He did a hell of a job for Chrysler, and they haven’t been that good since he left.

In 1984 I was shocked with the ugliness of the first Voyager minivan I ever saw, wondering who would ever buy such a hideous contraption. Four years later I was that guy.

In 1984, when I was looking for a job, my father gave me a copy of Iaccoca's autobiography, detailing how he responded when Henry Ford fired him when he was 54. A great read.

Jeffrey Epstein paid $350K to 'influence'
possible co-conspirators: prosecutors

Accused child sex predator Jeffrey Epstein wired a total of $350,000 to a pair of possible co-conspirators just days after the publication of a newspaper story alleging he sexually abused dozens of underage girls, federal prosecutors said Friday. The prosecutors said the payments, which were made last November after the bombshell Miami Herald story came out, demonstrate Epstein's willingness to tamper with witnesses. "This course of action, and in particular its timing, suggests the defendant was attempting to further influence co-conspirators who might provide information against him in light of the recently re-emerging allegations," the prosecutors wrote in court papers arguing that Epstein should remain behind bars until his trial.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, 9:50 A. M., Tuesday, August 31, 1999. “They will kill four today,” one Saudi in the crowd said. “No, fifteen,” said another. “You’re all wrong,” said one of the dozens of soldiers deployed around the parking lot of the city’s central mosque where the executions take place. “They will kill eight. They killed eight last Tuesday, and two more on Friday. And today is Tuesday, and they will kill eight again.” The method of execution is decreed in the Qu’ ran: beheading by sword. Saudi Arabia is the only nation that regularly beheads offenders. I’m the only Westerner in the crowd.

Last April 24 was Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. Millions of Armenians around the world remembered how the Islamic Ottoman Empire killed -- often cruelly and out of religious hatred -- some 1.5 million of their ancestors during World War I. Ironically, most people, including most Armenians, are unaware that the first genocide of Christian Armenians at the hands of Muslim Turks did not occur in the twentieth century; rather it began in 1019 -- exactly one thousand years ago this year -- when Turks first began to pour into and transform a then much larger Armenia
