This week, Sen. Bernie Sanders upped the ante on free stuff the legion of Democratic presidential candidates are promising voters. In what he called a “revolutionary proposal,” Sanders says that if elected he would forgive “all student debt” — that’s $1.6 trillion worth — and end “the absurdity of sentencing an entire generation to a lifetime of debt for the ‘crime’ of getting a college education.”
It would be hard to devise a plan that would shower more benefits on the wealthy than this one.
Just 12% of college debt is owed by those in the bottom quarter of income earners, according to the Urban Institute.

If the left really wants to make college affordable for everyone, force the extremely wealthy universities and colleges to spend their endowments on all of their students (some have endowments in the $billions) lower the cost of a degree by 90% and cut the salaries of their professors and administration.
They also need to inform their students that those endowments are grown by investing in BIg Bad Evil Wall Street, not just through alumni donations.

Isn't it bribery to offer "quid pro quo" arrangements? Sanders and others are saying "Vote for me or donate to my campaign and I will give you a return payoff". He is offering a couple trillion $$$ payoff to get the college student vote.
Note also that the REASON these students are so indebted is that the government took over college lending and has allowed students to take on absurd levels of debt. If you are intending to be a teacher, taking out student loans of $200K means you will never be able to pay it back. It's like giving them a loan to buy a Ferrari instead of a Chevy. It is a classic case of the government creating a problem in the first place and then stepping in to fix the problem in an even worse way.
Medicare for all is the government response to the government created problem of BOCare.
The Dodd-Frank financial debacle is the government fix for government forcing the banks to give loans to unqualified candidates, who then defaulted on the loans and created the 2008 financial crisis.
When government is offering to "fix" something, the first thing you should ask is "Why should I trust you to fix something that YOU broke in the first place?".

The student financial aid offices in most colleges and universities make it very easy for students to get loans. Most of the students are ignorant and do not realize the impact all these loans will have in the remaining of their lives. If the students reject the loans the officers get very mad and insist they take out loans. These loans guarantee their employment and cushy retirement plans. There is no counseling to the student as to the impact of these loans. All they see is free money for now.

Somewhat off topic but in the late 1960’s or early 70’s a slang term came in to rather common usage and it was the term “big league.” It was used identically to the way the President uses what is reported as “bigly.” and could be what he’s actually saying instead of the word universally reported by the lazy press.

Near the end of my academic career, I worked as a Dean of a School of Business, reporting to the Academic Vice President, who fancied himself an expert on higher education finance.
He liked to say 'there is room to charge $5000 more tuition per year here." (private school.)
He did not say 'if we charged 5000 more, we could add a major in X, or pay down debt.
His analysis was based on formulas used by the lenders on student loans. And that attitude, sadly, exists all over the country.
The original student loan program of President Nixon's, early 1970s, computed amount of loan to include family income. Jimmy Carter uncoupled that, in 1978, and I told my students there would be trouble ahead. And I was right.
Add in Title IX to the equation.
The federal government forced schools to add women's sports in amounts roughly equal to men's sports, from the beginning of title IX. there had to be expanded facilities, scholarships for every women's sport imaginable, and if that didn't balance participation numbers, men's sports had to be cut. (my university cut gymnastics to balance.)
All of those scholarships had to be paid for, thus, higher tuition for everyone else.

When the government starts paying for "free" college, it will come with strings. The government will eventually determine course curriculum. The government will determine what curriculum you will attend. The government will set quotas. Tge government will have a say in your career choice. And you just know that "diversity" will be goal #1.

Yes #7, this is just a piece of the grand plan to control our every move or movement. Healthcare opens the door to our fridge and other lifestyle choices in which our neighbors now have a vested interest. Education covers a vast swath of the rest.
Here's a prediction: Now as they call for free college the implication is that is to apply to all. If they are contemplating "means testing" for Social Security what makes anybody think "free college" won't be selective? Of course it will. Everything is about equality of outcome, absolutely everything. Well of course with the exception of the ruling elite.

Real simple. All those "free for everyone" laws have an amendment that says "You and I aren't gonna see a dime from this one ... it's free for everyone but me and you."

When the Middle Class finally gets the picture that they are working to support a nation of layabouts, stupid, pseudo-intellectual, perverted, pot-smoking, climate change fearing lunatics, they will soon become big fans of John Galt.

There are not enough billionaires and millionaires out there who will not find legal ways to shelter their assets to pay for all the “free stuff” which the leftist and liberal Democrats are using to pander for votes to prospective voters. As history has shown it will be the large legitimate middle class that will end up paying, if the Democrat socialists gain enough political power to actually pass their expressed “free stuff” socialist based programs into law.

Sadly, free education would apply to illegal immigrants too. We would pay education costs for the whole world, should they choose to cross our border illegally!
For those who just finished paying off their loans, it would be unfair to not reimburse them, right? I'm waiting to hear one of the 20-30 democrat clowns, er, candidates propose that!

Sounds like all who had repaid or paying will receive “ reparation” all the way back..the current trillion plus pales in comparison to the “reparation”
Laughable, hypocrisy, arrogance and topped off with stupidly..

"Socialists always run out of other people's money. It's quite a characteristic of them." -Margaret Thatcher
And as others have said, no one on the left ever asks "HOW will you really pay for it? " The "rich" seem to be an inexhaustible resource... only they aren't and the ones paying in the end will be everyone that works.
