On the day Beto O’Rourke announced he was running for president, Jesus Simental helped him deliver an answer to the skepticism that had been swirling around the Texas Democrat’s presidential run. Simental chipped in $30 or $40 — a tiny piece of the staggering $6.1 million O’Rourke raised online that day, beating out even the first-day total from online fundraising behemoth Sen. Bernie Sanders. “I’m disappointed in the result,” Simental said. “I don’t know enough about the political sciences to know why he hasn’t caught on. But it’s been disappointing to me.” If he has to blame someone, Simental said

Apart from his very wise sounding name, Señor Simental may not solved the riddle of ''If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.'' If he learned that, his money was well spent.

Other than the fact that for some reason he enjoys jumping on tables and counters to give speeches, he has helicopter arm movements and I am evil personified because I am white, he's pretty useless.

Cory Booker was, before this week, an afterthought in the crowded 2020 Democratic race, with half a dozen other candidates outpacing him in the polls and eclipsing him in the national conversation. But a direct confrontation with Democratic front-runner Joe Biden over the former vice president's comments about working with segregationist senators has placed him suddenly and squarely in the spotlight. It is not a moment Booker expected or planned. After Biden this week touted his ability to work with prominent segregationist senators in the 1970s, and quipped about the pejorative term "boy," Booker stepped in and spoke out on

The founding editor of Politico criticized Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden in a Thursday op-ed. Of Biden's recent campaign gaffes, John F. Harris wrote, "Joe Biden is facing an urgent question: What exactly is the rationale for his presidential candidacy?" (Snip) The primary issue with Biden's presidential bid, according to Harris, is that he seems to be out of touch with modern Democrats. Their concern, he writes, "is that Biden sees contemporary America through a distorting haze of nostalgia, that his values and assumptions were shaped by the last generation or even the one before that, that after many years

Joe Biden's two days of off-message musings about his long-ago work with some of the most notorious segregationists of their era has staffers calling for an intervention to save his 2020 presidential campaign. (Snip) Biden's light schedule, off-the-cuff ramblings, lateness to important events, and seeming inability to heed the advice of his aides create an impression of a directionless campaign. Just below the surface are fears of another campaign crash like Biden's first presidential effort, for the 1988 nomination, which ended amid plagiarism charges and a wave of unflattering stories. Twenty years later Biden didn't even make it past the

In the aftermath of a white police officer fatally shooting a black suspect in South Bend, a mostly African American crowd of family members, pastors and politicians gathered at a street-side vigil to voice anger over the killing, question its circumstances and emphasize their distrust of the police. One key leader wasn’t there to hear their grievances: Mayor Pete Buttigieg. The rising, 37-year-old Democrat had suspended his presidential campaign to return home, but mostly remained out of public view for three days. When he resurfaced, it was to deliver a speech telling six newly sworn police officers that they carry

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn has apologized to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer for his comments about the lack of diversity among their top staff that stirred furor within the upper ranks of leadership. Clyburn's swift efforts to recant his criticism of his fellow Democratic leaders are the latest in a string of recent verbal missteps in which the No. 3 House Democrat has been forced to walk back contentious remarks. Earlier this month, Clyburn had retreated from his comments suggesting that an impeachment inquiry was inevitable. Weeks before that, Clyburn came under fire by some

It said imposing the tariffs will drive up costs, which will be a burden for J.C. Penney’s core customers -- middle-class working women. Of the priority goods, 13 are apparel

Residents of Prince George’s County, Maryland and the American Humanist Association had sued to have the cross taken down, but the court determined that factors including the history of the memorial support the notion that it is not religious in nature. “For nearly a century, the Bladensburg Cross has expressed the community’s grief at the loss of the young men who perished, its thanks for their sacrifice, and its

Shortly after Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016, a debate broke out about the future of the Democratic Party: Should it work to recapture white voters who had fled and voted so overwhelmingly for Republicans? Or should Democrats continue down the path of so-called "identity politics" and double down on efforts to build a racially diverse coalition of voters? Thanks to developments this week, we can put that choice in clearer terms: Are Democrats going to be the party of Joe Biden or Ta-Nahesi Coates? Judging by the early returns, Bidenism has a limited future. The real question, perhaps
