A 21-year-old Pittsburgh resident and Syrian refugee accused of planning an attack on a Christian church on the city's North Side and providing resources to ISIS has been arrested. Mustafa Mousab Alowemer, 21, was arrested Wednesday based on a federal complaint charging him with one count of attempting to provide material support and resources to ISIS, and two counts of distributing information relating to an explosive, destructive device or weapon of mass destruction in relation to a plan to attack a church. Alowemer allegedly planned to bomb the Legacy International Worship Center using a weapon of mass destruction. The FBI said Alowemer thought he was plotting

The president of the United States weighed retaliatory airstrikes on the Islamic Republic of Iran before pulling back at the eleventh hour, he confirmed Friday morning. ‘We were cocked & loaded to retaliate last night on 3 different sights when I asked, how many will die. 150 people, sir, was the answer from a General. 10 minutes before the strike I stopped it,’ Donald Trump tweeted. He said the planned response was not ‘proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone,’ referring to the recent malign activity from the regime. ‘I am in no hurry,’ he caveated. ‘He just tweeted it out,’ Alex Ward, defense reporter at Vox, joked. MARRAKESH, Morocco — Their screams must have carried for miles in the thin air of the Atlas Mountains, anguished sounds of a terrorist attack that no one was there to hear, see or stop. Maren Ueland, 28, and Louisa Jespersen, 24, Scandinavian students who revered the outdoors, were descending North Africa’s highest peak in December when they encountered four men searching for Westerners to kill. The men waited until after nightfall, then approached the women’s tent with knives and misplaced hopes of becoming Islamist heroes. They attacked Ueland, a Norwegian, and her Danish friend, Jespersen, in their sleeping bags, stabbed them until their bodies went limp

WASHINGTON — On Thursday evening, U.S. Cyber Command launched a retaliatory digital strike against an Iranian spy group that supported last week’s limpet mine attacks on commercial ships, according to two former intelligence officials. The group, which has ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, has over the past several years digitally tracked and targeted military and civilian ships passing through the economically important Strait of Hormuz, through which pass 17.4 million barrels of oil per day. Those capabilities, which have advanced over time, enabled attacks on vessels in the region for several years. Though sources declined to provide any further details of the retaliatory cyber operation, the response highlights

This is how you know the Mueller investigation, once touted as a Trump-killer, has ended as anything more than another cash-grab. You know it's over when they're signing the book contracts. Andrew Weissmann, one of special counsel Robert Mueller's top prosecutors, is writing a book for Random House focused on his work during the Russia investigation, the New York Times reports. The big picture: Weissman's book will be one of the first inside looks from Mueller's team, but the Times reports that it's not clear if it'll provide any new revelations or details about how the investigation operated. The famously leak-free investigation that is.

Justice for the victims of the Flint water crisis will not come by locking up good people. It will only be delivered by rebuilding the city's water system and making whole those who were damaged by its contamination. That's why we applaud Attorney General Dana Nessel for dropping the charges against the eight remaining defendants, including Nick Lyon, the former director of the Health and Human Services Department, and Eden Wells, the state's former chief medical officer, both of whom had faced manslaughter counts. We have been suspicious of the motives of the criminal probe since it was launched by former Attorney General Bill Schuette in advance

The 2020 presidential election is in high gear; some 16 months before voters cast their ballots, the campaign already promises to be intense and bitter to a degree perhaps unprecedented. A measure of this is that President Trump's supporters began lining up to get into his campaign launch rally in Tampa, Fla., 40 hours before it was scheduled to begin. They camped out on the streets during a monsoon! There were more than 100,000 applications for seats in an auditorium with a maximum capacity of 20,000. People drove from as far away as Boston to be there. Intense! But intensity of support is matched by fervor of opposition.

There are actually things Congress could be doing, you know. Things which are of more value than putting on demagogic expositions like allowing Sheila Jackson-Lee, the utterly moronic Democrat congresswoman from the slums of Houston, to stage a hearing on the urgent necessity of paying reparations to the black community for slavery. This wasn’t a hearing to discuss a true reparations plan, mind you. No, what Wednesday’s circus involved was a hearing to talk about creating a commission — surely a blue-ribbon outfit that will be! — to create a study of whether reparations would be practical. From the text of the bill Jackson authored

Facebook usage has plummeted over the last year, according to data seen by the Guardian, though the company says usage by other measures continues to grow. Since April 2018, the first full month after news of the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke in the Observer, actions on Facebook such as likes, shares and posts have dropped by almost 20%, according to the business analytics firm Mixpanel. Taking that month as a baseline, total actions fell by more that 10% within a month, recovered a bit over the summer and then fell again over the autumn and winter of 2018, except for a brief rally over the period of the US midterm elections.

The trial of Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher, who is accused of killing an ISIS prisoner, took a dramatic turn on Thursday as a combat medic said during his testimony that he believes that he himself killed the terrorist and not Gallagher. "SEAL Team Seven Medic Corey Scott, during cross-examination in the courtroom at Naval Base San Diego, revealed he killed the fighter by asphyxiation after holding his thumb over a breathing tube that had been inserted into the militant's mouth," Fox News reported. "He also testified that Gallagher stabbed the fighter, but did not kill him."

Robert Mueller turned in a disgraceful performance as Special Counsel, allowing himself and his staff to be used as a tool of the Democratic Party. He knew from an early stage that the core of what he was supposed to be investigating–“collusion”–did not exist. But he plowed forward, hoping to ensnare members of the Trump campaign or administration in process crimes. Meanwhile, he ignored the real scandal: the attempt by top-ranking officials at the FBI and CIA to swing the 2016 presidential election to Hillary Clinton, or, failing that, to disable the incoming Trump administration before it had a chance to get off the ground.
