President Donald Trump is officially withholding hundreds of millions in U.S. aid to three Central American countries as punishment for being much of the source of the current illegal immigration crisis. The White House informed Congress Monday that it will permanently divert $370 million in aid to El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, according to Reuters. That money was previously approved by Congress for fiscal year 2018, but had not yet been used. Trump is not stopping there. The administration is also suspending $180 million that was approved in fiscal year 2017 that had not yet been spent. Three reasons Trump-Russia hasn't turned into Watergate 23 replies

Why haven't efforts to impeach President Trump gained Watergate-style momentum? The lack of energy has created a sense of bafflement and disappointment among some of the president's most determined adversaries. But there are some simple reasons for it. Here are three: 1.) The facts are different. In Watergate, the underlying crime was a break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters, perpetrated by burglars paid by President Richard Nixon's reelection campaign. The scandal proceeded from there. In Trump-Russia, the underlying crime was the hacking of the DNC's and John Podesta's emails — a crime committed by Russians in Russia. Special counsel Robert Mueller, who indicted a number of Russians and Russian entities

Happy 70th birthday, fake Indian! Elizabeth Warren’s big day is Saturday, and I’ll bet this is news to you. But I think the imminent 7-0 explains the recent torrent of fawning puff pieces Lieawatha has gotten in the alt-left media over the last few days. These next 72 hours are her hagiographers’ last chance not to have to lump her in there, actuarially anyway, with the other wrinkly septuagenarians on the Democrat side, Joe Biden, age 76, and Bernie Sanders, age 77. These slobbering kisses she’s been collecting in recent days are actually the second break she’s gotten on the old-folks candidate front.

Democratic presidential hopefuls have been reluctant to attack Joseph R. Biden Jr. over his eight years with President Barack Obama, but voters in early primary states say it’s an opportunity for anyone brave enough to challenge the Obama orthodoxy. While the Democratic base still harbors enormous goodwill toward the country’s first black president, some early state voters say Mr. Obama failed to deliver on many of his promises, leaving the political battleground virtually unchanged a decade after his historic ascent to the White House. “We saw what happened with Obama. There’s no change yet,” said Democratic voter Derryl Mitchell II, 27, who owns a media marketing firm in Charleston, South Carolina.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Gavin Newsom formally apologized Tuesday and pushed the state to reckon with California’s dark history of violence, mistreatment and neglect of Native Americans, saying it amounted to genocide. The Democratic governor met with tribal leaders at the future site of the California Indian Heritage Center, where he also announced the creation of a council to examine the state’s role in campaigns of extermination and exploitation. Throughout history, the California government was key to efforts to remove and kill Native Americans who lived on land that would become part of what is now the world’s fifth-largest economy. “Genocide.

Comments from two U.S. senators -- one a Democrat and the other a Republican -- appeared to illustrate Tuesday how far apart the two parties are on the proposal of reparations for the descendants of American slaves. U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., one of three African-Americans in the U.S. Senate, is expected to argue Wednesday that the nation hasn’t fully come to grips with “the racism and white supremacy that tainted” the nation's founding, according to remarks prepared for his scheduled Wednesday appearance before the House Judiciary Committee. “As a nation, we have yet to truly acknowledge and grapple with the racism and white supremacy

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews is worried that Democrats and their Hollywood “buddies” have not learned important lessons from the 2016 presidential election. The “Hardball” host told network colleagues on “Morning Joe” that President Trump is primed to once again win votes in Pennsylvania and key states due to the hubris of the “liberal elite.” “[Voters in 2016] knew there was a great party going on among the liberal elite with all their Hollywood buddies, and they weren’t invited,” Mr. Matthews said Monday. “Nobody wants to go to a party if they haven’t been invited. … A friend of mine once said — he said this about relationships with men and women —

You really have to wonder by the series NBC News is running right now asking each of the Democratic presidential candidate to name their “one big idea” for America that will cause a groundswell and propel them to the White House next year. These are some of the “big ideas” they are offering: Cory Booker: Baby bonds. What? John Hickenlooper: Skills training. Whoa! Save up for that! Kamala Harris: Raises for teachers. Responsible people recoil when politically pejorative terms are hurled around. The Left, for example, now calls opponents “Racist!” without any basis. The Southern Poverty Law Center, once an address for identifying true prejudice, now has lost all claim to seriousness by defaming even morally decent, mainstream legal-defense groups like Alliance Defending Freedom as bigots — even as their own conduct has been rife with sexual abuse creating a hostile work environment. Democrats are quietly airing concerns that battles with President Trump, including investigations of the president and his administration along with the noisy debate over impeachment, are overshadowing the party’s agenda, threatening its grip on the House in 2020. That narrative has been fueled by Trump, who has used his Twitter feed and interviews to lambaste Democrats as the “Do Nothing Party,” when in fact they have spent the first five months of their House majority ticking through agenda items they highlighted in the midterm campaign, addressing matters including health-care prices, political corruption and background checks for gun buyers. But voters aren’t paying much attention, party leaders are finding,

“What’s your pitch to the swing voter on the fence?” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked President Trump on Sunday. Questions of this sort are gifts to politicians, but interviewers ask them for a couple of reasons. One, they’re civic-minded. Politicians deserve the opportunity to make their cases straightforwardly — and voters deserve to hear them. Second, they save time. (Snip) Trump’s initial answer started off following the standard script. He got four words off that must have had his political advisors cheering, “Safety, security, great economy.” Ideally, this is where Trump should have stopped talking.
