Sen. Richard Blumenthal asserted that former acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan was potentially involved in a criminal cover-up for failing to disclose an alleged domestic violence incident before his nomination as the permanent secretary of defense. "I feel that there was possibly a deliberate concealment here," Blumenthal said Tuesday after Shanahan resigned when it was revealed that he was involved in a 2010 violent domestic dispute with his ex-wife. "I think there ought to be an investigation by the IG and the Department of Defense. There is absolutely no reason for the failure to disclose to the Arms Services Committee as a part of our process that there was

Acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan withdrew from consideration to be confirmed as Pentagon chief on Tuesday, President Trump said, plunging the Pentagon into leadership upheaval for the second time in six months. In a message on Twitter, Trump said that Shanahan, a former Boeing executive who has led the Pentagon on an acting basis since early this year, had “decided not to go forward with his confirmation process so that he can devote more time to his family.” Trump thanked Shanahan for his “outstanding service” and said that Mark Esper, another former defense industry executive who now serves as

Mexico has decided to reassume operational control and responsibility over its southern border with Guatemala, pledging to deploy up to 6,000 of its own national guard troops. The shift comes in response to President Trump’s recent tariff threat. This is most welcome, not to mention in accord with principles of justice. Open-borders activists are fond of arguing (asserting without evidence, really) that true Christianity is pro-open borders because the alternative—a sane, functional, and efficient immigration system that prioritizes and secures the interests, safety, and welfare of American citizens—is somehow “cruel.” That’s nonsense.

Soon after he took over as medical director of the Urgent Care & Surgery Center in eastern Tennessee in 2012, Dr. Marc Valley realized he was supervising illegal drug dealers in lab coats. While it’s not unusual for special government offices to outsource for services such as computer support, Mueller also hired contractors to compile “investigative reports” and other “information.” The arrangement has led congressional investigators, government watchdog groups and others to speculate that the private investigators and researchers who worked for the special counsel’s office might have included Christopher Steele and Fusion GPS, the private research firm that hired Steele to produce the Russia
