In the wake the landmark $44 million verdict against Oberlin College for defaming a 5-generation family business, information is coming to light about the behavior of students and administrators at that once-respectable institution that is simply appalling. As throughout the entire story, Legal Insurrection is owed a huge thank-you for its deep dive into the evidence.
A revealed in a tweet from LI, a 2017 article in a student publication at Oberlin, The Grape, discussed the predominance (over 80%!) of Oberlin students in shoplifting arrests in that small Ohio city.

When did it change to $44 million? I thought the number was $33 million; $11million tripled.

This is the scam. I'll break whatever laws I want to break, fail to be responsible for my obligations, and have no moral standards. If you get in the way of that, you are a racist bigot.

Social justice is really just fancy phrase for wanting everything for free. Shoplifting is bit a tiny step from that.

If you’re curious to observe full-blown socialism, up close and personal, just visit a campus like Oberlin.

Sometimes racist bigots win as in this case. Shoplifting might be a petty crime to you but it's theft from another person who owns the property plain and simple. It all depends on which side of the wine bottle you stand on and a 'beat down' is a crime too.

So, 80% of shoplifting is committed by students. I hope this revelation motivates shopkeepers in other college towns to speak up.
This article deserves a second read, if you've only read it once. The damage from this "I deserve! . . ." culture like Oberlin College's is significant, meaningful and will be long lasting unless confronted immediately.

So it seems Oberlin believes their students should have "diplomatic immunity" from their behavior.

Chase and Detain should be changed to Shoot First, Question Later. In some areas of this country it is ludicrous to use "black" and "culture" in the same sentence. My daughter was once hit with a thrown apple at college for not acknowledging the crude catcalls of the black boys. There are more animals than decent people in this group. Yeah, I'm a racist now.

FTA: "One student, anonymously quoted in the story, described stealing pasta noodles from Gibson's twice. 'It wasn't expensive and I felt like it....I just preferred not paying for it but I could have.'"
No thought for anyone else but her/himself. No thought for the impact on the store owners or society at large. What if everyone felt that way? How many businesses would there be if everyone just helped themselves to whatever they wanted and didn't pay?

I don't believe California prosecutes crimes under $900. It's a project of the LEFT.

Re #1, the jury awarded $11million in compensatory damages and $33million in punitive damages = $44million. That is what they awarded. State law limits punitive damages - I believe the formula is 2x the compensatory damages, but that is from memory. That would reduce the actual punitive damages award to $22 million. When they speak of $44million that is the total of what the jury believed the Gibsons should receive. Any adjustment came after the fact.

The sad thing is that the students and faculty have not learned a thing from this. They are still defensive, and telling each other that they were right and everyone else is wrong. I would be withholding my financial support of the college, if I was alumni. I would be ashamed to admit I had ever been a part of Oberlin College. Recent graduates, still living in their parent's basement, may sympathize with the school. I bet some of the older graduates, who actually send financial support, do not!

#1#11#12- Less than 24 hours after the $44 million settlement verdict, Oberlin College’s president sent a letter assuring alumni the punitive damage award will change: “This is not the final outcome. This is, in fact, just one step along the way of what may turn out to be a lengthy and complex legal process. ...” That verbiage, to some interpretations, seems threatening, intending to repudiate, at all costs, the imputation that Oberlin College libeled Gibson’s Bakery and, with Oberlin College’s extensive financial resources to pursue appeals, cause the Gibson family further emotional turmoil and personal financial liability. Also, the letter said the legal process “...will not distract, deter or materially harm our education mission, for today’s students or for generations to come.” Time and actions on the part of the college will be telling.

Leftists are evil. That is the root problem.
"Archaic chase-and-detain"......how about the Gibsons arm themselves and when
they are attacked by multiple attackers in their 'archaic chase-and-detain' effort to
keep their own items from thieves, they can pull out a gun and use the achaic
shot-to-defend approach? Works for me.

Berlin, like so many colleges today, is a stinking, rotting corpse of institutional corruption. I hope they go bankrupt and Oberlin simply dies.

I'm reminded of the Obama program whereby the Sheriff in Broward County Fl would not charge black students for crimes, letting the schools handle 'punishment,' so they wouldn't have criminal public records.

Can the Gibsons force the college to put the money in escrow if the college wants to drag this process further? ......

I once met a man who served onboard a ship in the Royal Navy with Prince Andrew. The prince was far from universally loved and this person later learned that enlisted galley personnel would routinely add unpalatable things, nauseating but harmless, to the prince’s victuals. Gibson’s may not retain the Oberlin account but some other local bakery will. In all probability the owners will know the Gibson family and have neighbors who have been victims of the low-class and criminal culture at Oberlin. They may detest the rich arrogant thieves at the school as much as any other local. Think about that, Oberlin snowflake, the next time you bite into your fresh morning croissant and consider how wise it is to insult those who prepare your food. And have a nice day.
