DES MOINES, Iowa — Beto O'Rourke stumbled with women from the start, featuring his wife sitting silently in his presidential campaign launch video and joking repeatedly about being a part-time parent. But with his campaign at risk of stalling, O'Rourke is attempting to improve his standing with female voters. His wife, Amy, will begin a rare string of campaign appearances on Friday in Iowa, speaking at joint events and making herself available to chat and take pictures with would-be supporters. Her presence will be an important test of whether Beto O'Rourke can reverse his less-than-favorable first impressions with women. It's an

If he were a viable candidate, there wouldn't be a need to "rely on the wife". It's somewhat disconcerting in a graspingly tacky way that Mr O'Rourke or his handlers would need to resort to such a plan B. In any case, she looks relatively advanced in her years and her hair needs fixing.

I seem to recall one Dr. Howard Dean in 2004 who had a Dr. wife who wanted nothing to do with campaigning. And as his campaign fell apart, he trotted her out - to campaign. But she merely sat beside him, silent in her support. When I look at the fake mexican's wife, I am reminded of that.

#5, perhaps she hasn’t recovered from the concussion she must have gotten as she sat next to him on a sofa when he declared his presidential run. He was gesticulating so wildly that her whole body was suffering whiplash. Her brain must have been sliding around her skull like an omelet in a pan just before it is flipped. Throughout, she didn’t exactly look engaged in the enterprise.

That video is great in its own way. There is a grinning, silent, possibly heavily medicated Amy looking longingly at Beto. The problem is, she is clinging to his left arm and preventing him from frantically waving it around while speaking. But then again, as noted, perhaps she was 'dazed and confused' from a previous speech of his where she failed to secure his arm, and got whacked in the noggin...

SOUTH STRAFFORD, Vt. — Matt Christie knew that life had changed dramatically shortly after moving here from Malden in January. His car battery was dead, and he went to the general store across the street in search of jumper cables. The owner, a neighbor Christie had met just briefly, didn’t have any for sale, but he told Christie to go into his garage (unlocked), take his truck (keys in the ignition), and drive it home to give himself a jump (success). Former Vice President Joe Biden's decision to change his position on the Hyde Amendment during the 2020 election cycle raised questions about the frontrunner's "steadiness" and "performance." That was the claim from David Axelrod, a top adviser and strategist to former President Barack Obama -- Biden's running mate. His comments came as the former vice president appeared to change his mind twice on the controversial amendment blocking federal funding for most abortions. Biden initially appeared to tell an activist that he wanted to repeal Hyde but his campaign later clarified that he supported the measure -- as he did in the preceding

It has become a cliche of this campaign: A White House hopeful pauses from a speech to invite beleaguered university graduates to shout out the size of the debt they carry -- as if competing in an auction -- and the numbers bellowed from the crowd spiral upward. The promise of free college has catapulted from the fringe in 2015, when Sen. Bernie Sanders muscled the idea into presidential politics

The 2020 election is lurching toward us like a malfunctioning robot, and I think we must ask ourselves: Can we risk nominating a man for president? Men selected as major-party nominees for president have failed to win the popular vote 50 percent of the time. Contrast that to the 100 percent of the time that a female nominee for president has won the popular vote. More importantly, are Americans ready to withstand another four years of male presidency? It is unpleasant to traffic in stereotypes, and many men are in no way like this, but recent experience teaches that for usually 31 days a month (sometimes 30, occasionally 28),
