Tuscaloosa, Ala.—The University of Alabama board of trustees voted Friday to give back a $26.5 million donation from a philanthropist who recently called on students to boycott the school over the state’s new abortion ban. Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr., a 70-year-old real estate investor and lawyer, had already given $21.5 million to the university after his pledge last September with the rest still to come. But in a news release last week, he urged students to participate in a boycott of the school. Hours later, Alabama announced it was considering giving back his money, the biggest donation ever

Good for the University of Alabama. Money hardly ever comes without strings attached. Culverhouse could give some of it to Oberlin. They will be needing some money soon.

For 26 million, Hugh F. C. could build a nifty human baby abattoir in Los Angeles, or Boston, or Chicago, or NYC. One door closes, another opens.

I'm sure the football program brings in more money each year than Culverson, whoever he is, gave. Glad they told him to take his money and go pound sand.

As a native of Auburn and a diehard Tiger, it is very difficult for me to say (or think) anything good about UAT (University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa), BUT, this is an exception. Good for you, Alabama! Makes me proud to be from the Heart of Dixie, where our state motto is “We Dare Defend Our Rights”. On this one, I will even say Roll Tide!

I recall, several decades ago, the president of Yale, Giambetti, said money donated by criminals to Yale was purified as soon as it went into a Yale bank account! (relying solely on memory here, always risky, but I believe correct.)

Hours later, Alabama announced it was considering giving back his money, the biggest donation ever made to the university. Within minutes a maintenance crew removed his name from the law school that was named in his honor. Excellent move, Alabama!

A growing number of Democratic presidential candidates in the 2020 election are calling for an end to a long-held standard for blood donations, which critics say enforces latent homophobia and leaves America’s blood supply vulnerable to unscientific limits. That policy, which bans gay and bisexual men who have had sex with other men within the past year from donating blood, has been criticised as unnecessary in terms of modern scientific testing for blood-borne sexually transmitted diseases like HIV–modern tests can find the virus in the bloodstream within two weeks. Democrats lashed out in all directions at President Trump after he won concessions from Mexico to try to stop the flow of illegal immigrants at the border. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi chided the president Saturday for his method, saying his threat of tariffs was unbecoming of a friendly country’s treatment of a neighbor. But Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer took a different approach, saying—seemingly with as much sarcasm as can drip on Twitter—that since Mr. Trump has struck a deal, he can stop talking about illegal immigration.(Snip) Just days before Mr. Schumer had predicted Mr. Trump would cave

The march, which is returning to Washington after a 12-year hiatus, is seeking to be more radical than its previous version, including LGBTQ people of various races, religions, socioeconomic classes and gender identities, organizers told The Washington Post. However, pro-Zionist and “nationalist symbols,” including Israeli and Jewish Pride flags, will not be welcomed at the event, organizers said. Yael Horowitz, a Jewish march organizer, said the ban is

Phoenix—The federal government has stopped paying for English-language courses and legal services at facilities that hold immigrant children around the country, imposing budget cuts it says are necessary at a time when record numbers of unaccompanied children are arriving at the border. The Health and Human Services department notified shelters around the country last week that it was not going to reimburse them for teachers' pay or other costs such as legal services or recreational equipment. The move appears to violate a legal settlement known as the Flores agreement that requires the government to provide education and recreational activities

The 2020 election is lurching toward us like a malfunctioning robot, and I think we must ask ourselves: Can we risk nominating a man for president? Men selected as major-party nominees for president have failed to win the popular vote 50 percent of the time. Contrast that to the 100 percent of the time that a female nominee for president has won the popular vote. More importantly, are Americans ready to withstand another four years of male presidency? It is unpleasant to traffic in stereotypes, and many men are in no way like this, but recent experience teaches that for usually 31 days a month (sometimes 30, occasionally 28),

The insurer that covers Oberlin College for liability, Lexington Insurance Company, filed documents with court last month indicating that its umbrella liability policy would not cover costs of any judgment for the plaintiffs. That means that if, after the appeals process has run its course, the plaintiffs move to collect the $11 million a jury just awarded them (plus whatever punitive damages – up to $22 more – are awarded next week), Lexington likely won’t pay and Oberlin would have to sue for reimbursement. (snip) Oberlin has a mess on its hands and its trustees must begin planning for possible need to cough up millions of dollars.

Incorrectly calling a fetus a ‘baby’ or ‘the unborn’ is part of the strategy used by antiabortion groups to shift language/legality/public opinion. That is simply a bold-faced lie.
