A party by the beach to commemorate the unofficial start of summer resulted in crews in the coastal Virginia community cleaning up heaps of trash and tons of debris left behind by beachgoers on Memorial Day. The city of Virginia Beach said in a news release Tuesday beach operations crews cleared away more than 10 tons of trash and debris from Chic's Beach, the mass of trash left behind from "Floatopia," a beach event put on by locals Sunday that spread via a Facebook invite. "The city takes great pride in keeping our beaches clean, so we were disappointed to

Invite in trashy folks, get trashy outcomes. I never, ever leave trash anywhere.
Va Beach has had trouble with their well tanned visitors causing trouble in the past, I wonder
if this is the same ghetto crew or different trashy folks?

For over 125 years, the nearby Pasadena Tournament of Roses has held its New Year’s Day Parade. Manned entirely by 935 volunteers. It generates a great deal of trash along its 5-1/2 mile route. Visitors/spectators camp out New Year’s Eve along the route, barbecue, feed themselves, sleep. By no later than the next morning, you wouldn’t know there had been a parade.

Permits and security deposits would cure this.

In the 80s, this area wasn't the nicest part of VABeach. Sounds like some people are trying to recreate the past.

Not unique. Same thing happens every summer holiday weekend from Panama City Beach in Florida to Pacific Beach in San Diego. And for the residents there, while you don't deserve this I never found Chick's to be a "beautiful" beach. The sand is grubby and biting flies are always a problem.

But, I'm sure no one left a stray plastic bag, or straw, right? s/
Never quite sure why people seem to believe they can go somewhere, and believe someone else is supposed to clean up after them.
Of course, more trash bins with regular pick-ups during the events might help too. Rarely see pick-ups just cans over-flowing and spilling about.

So rude it must be an East coast thing. Having grown up in a beach
town I can say the absolute depth of low class behavior was to leave
trash on the sand. Trash barrels were numerous and even on the
4th when they would fill quickly, the trash would be neatly stacked
next to the barrels.

Yeah but they raked in tens of thousands of tourist dollars, at least from the ones who didn't run out on their restaurant and bar tabs. It's the same reason that Myrtle Beach puts up with Black Bike Week, the money outweighs the fights and the trash. I won't return to either of those beaches.

It's been my observation that conservatives generally clean up after themselves, others not so much.

Virginia Beach must be a libtard enclave. They strew garbage all over the place wherever they show up.

In the comment section from another news site someone suggested the city track down the organizers and participants via social media, start by searching #floatopia (and two other hashtags) on Twitter and Instagram. Make them pay for the cleanup and fine them for hosting an event without the proper permits.

People crack me up. They ruin everything.
Well, certain people that is.
Even fly larvae -- maggots -- and brainless aquatic bivalves provide a crucial service in the maintaining of the planet. Homo sapiens, not so much.
Again, certain Homo sapiens that is.
When I was a Boy Scout 50 years ago the drill was simple: leave a campground or wilderness area cleaner than when you arrived. Nothing to it and we did it all the time.
Of course, people ruined the Boy Scouts too so there's that...

10 tons sounds like a lot but that would all fit in one garbage truck.

#12 -- "It's been my observation that conservatives generally clean up after themselves, others not so much."
That may seem a snobbish comment, but I remember seeing contrasting photos of a pro-life gathering of Conservatives in Washington, DC vs a protest-type gathering of Liberals in the same spot. The first one was neat and trash-free, while the second absolutely looked like a garbage dump; both were taken immediately following the events. Enough said.
