New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is learning a lot of new things in Washington — including what a garbage disposal is. SEE ALSO Ocasio-Cortez: Garbage disposals were never really a thing in NYC The 29-year-old freshman congresswoman posted photos and videos on Instagram showing the apparently “terrifying” contraption at work in her swanky DC apartment and saying she’d never seen one before. “OK everyone I need your help because I just moved into this apartment a few months ago and I just flipped a switch and it made that noise and it scared the daylights out of me,”

FTA:
“This DC apartment is bougie and has things I’ve never seen before…,” Ocasio-Cortez captioned the video, later noting: “Is this what social mobility is? Using kitchen appliances you never saw growing up?”
“Garbage disposals were never a thing in NYC.”
If she never had one, and didn’t know what one was, then no one had one.
But what about her real home in Westchester County? The one her late father moved them to when she was just a kid?
Loony toon.

She should be told that pouring cooking grease down the disposal is A-OK.

Don´t know if it´s still the case, but it used to be illegal to have a garbage disposal in NYC. That was a nod to the unions thugs doing garbage collection. Even if that was repealed, there a lot fewer than average disposals in that area.

For her sake and her readers’, I hope the bathroom of this swanky apartment doesn’t have a bidet.

To some degree, AOC is getting what she wants from these antics and others like them: ATTENTION.
Is it the right kind of attention? One could argue successfully that, in politics, no attention is bad attention. People remember names when they go to the polling booth. They vote for the names they remember, often whether for good or ill.
Is AOC an idiot? Sure. Yes. Definitely. Is she an idiot who gets attention? Sure. Yes. Definitely. Is the attention doing her any harm? Nope. Not a bit.
Maybe we should just ignore her -- at least until she stops acting like a child. That may take 80 or 90 years.

Not a chance this is true. While disposals were once illegal in NYC they haven´t been for at least a decade.
Besides that, she was raised in Yorktown Heights not the city. She also presumably lived in Boston while attending college AND worked in the food service industry, where they are also common
Her Twitter followers will obviously believe anything!!

Yeah, it won´t get the coverage that GWHB got back in the early 90s when he first encountered a supermarket scanner on a campaign visit (which, by the way, was just starting to become a regular sight at grocery stores at the time).
Garbage disposals have been around since before I was kid ... and I´m more than twice of this whiz-kid bartendress.

Not only that but someone should also introduce AOC to the wonders of an indoor flush toilet, so she can experience one of the benefits of a capitalist system.

Puerto Ricans had their own garbage disposal in NYC. It was called ´midnight special´. They tended to toss their rubbish right out of the window. It appears they brought this ´culture´ from their island up to NYC...

Growing vegetables in dirt. She said it´s like magic. Now a garbage disposal. I understand that she is currently looking for hot dog seeds and needs help with that large white pot full of water with a lid that sits in her bathroom. What´s next? A sweeper, pencil sharpener, washing machine, ice. Everyday is truly an adventure.

1997, or 12 years, which would be her entire adult life.

Sorry for the math error - 1997 would be 22 years, or since she was seven.

She actually grew up in northern Westchester County, NY State, about 45 minutes north of the Bronx/NYC line. I know the area like the back of my hand, and I call TOTAL bee ess.

#5, after living in Italy, my mother came to appreciate the bidet, and had one installed in her home in rural Virginia.
A lot of looks and strange questions came from that. Fortunately it was in the master bath and relatively few folks ever saw it.
When we sold the home after my parent´s death, it was a topic of interest, no doubt, with people viewing the home to buy. I wonder if the buyers left it in place or not?

The bar she worked in didn´t have a disposal?? What did she do, eat all the lemon and lime rinds?? Oh, wait, maybe that is why she has such a sour outlook all the time...

I have read that the aged infrastructure in many NYC apartments has also contributed to the dearth of garbage disposals, with landlords not wanting to tax an already vulnerable plumbing system. I didn´t know they were illegal at one time.
That said, surely she has encountered such a thing before this.
