FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday disputed Attorney General William Barr´s use of the word "spying" to describe surveillance of President Trump´s 2016 campaign. "That’s not the term I would use," Wray told the Senate Appropriations Committee. "To me the key question is making sure it´s done by the book, consistent with our lawful authorities. That´s the key question, different people use different colloquial phrases." Wray, who appeared before lawmakers to talk about the FBI´s budget request for fiscal year 2020, added that he was not "personally" aware of any evidence pointing to illegal information gathering by law enforcement before

Wray´s primary purpose in life now seems to be covering up and explaining away the massive corruption inside the FBI rather than cleaning it out.
I am becoming convinced that Wray is part of the problem, not a part of the solution.

Only in the insane asylum of DC. Spying isn´t spying. Therefore, the CIA Spooks are no longer Spooks but Surveillers?

Of course you would not use that term, you directly supervise those that actually did the spying.
I believe that you may be biased when it comes to the FBI´s spying on Trump as you are part of the swamp; I hear no condemnation of these activities nor see any action to prevent it in the future.

No you wouldn’t, you limp-wristed mendacious little pantywaist tool of the Deep State…
One of these days you will wake up and realize that no one has considered you to be anything but a placeholder for quite a while now, and the tick tock is going strong….
An LDotter called him Fey Wray. Very good. My mind runs to worse adjectives.

No, he didn´t contradict Barr. He CYA. His agency was the one that initiated and executed the spying. He is protecting the FBI by saying that FBI spying wasn´t really spying. He has to. He doesn´t want the world to think he took over a corrupt agency. It would destroy public trust, in what little trust there may be left with hard core Democrats. IF the FBI is to have any respect, the head hs to protect it from being known as an the rogue agency that spied on a US presidential campaign.

The whole distinction between surveillance and spying is, once again, one of intent. "Spying" is the same as "surveillance" but with "hostle intent". If you think the FBI´s investigation of Trump was done with hostile intent then it was spying otherwise it was surveillance. Wray obviously views the activity as driven by a legitimate and constitutional objective to protect the country. But the facts are that it was conceived and set in motion by hostile political motives from Brennan, Clapper, Comey, McCabe, Strzok, Clinton, et al. Therefore it was spying.

Spot on # 1. I am hoping that when Trump is reelected that he will dump this little liar who looks and acts like a street punk every time he is at a hearing. The puny country hick should not ever have been appointed FBI director. Leave it to Rosenschwein to recommend useful idiots for the job.

The headline is wrong and people are falling for it. He just said that he viewed "spying" as a colloquialism. He is not disagreeing with Barr, only with Barr´s terminology. He makes it clear that "surveillance" as he calls it must be legal. That is still the question.

Mr. Director,
I don´t really care what term you would use.
"Spying" is good enough for me.
Please tell your boss that there are a LOT of people out here who want him to run the rats to ground and in fact since he is the chief law enforcement officer of the USA, we EXPECT him to. You, sir, on the other hand would do well to sit down and shut up.

what do you expect the head of the FBI do, come out and admit that leaders of the FBI under Obama spied illegally on anyone. Leaders of the FBI cover their asses better than just about anybody out there in govt. Surprised? Not me!

It all boils down to hair splitting! As in the end who cares what Wray believes as he was not there when the “spying” was ongoing and is not part of the DOJ/IG Investigation.

What #18 said. Look them up. Spying means watching over and reporting on their activities. Secretly. Surveillance means the same thing.

Well my guess Mr Wray is that you do not have the courage required to use the term. Mr Barr is one of the few in DC who actually does. But then he doesn´t need the job maybe you do.

All this hedging is a clear indicator that the Deep State believes the President is not going to win re-election. I assume they are confident because of the dems ability to steal votes and not due to their outstanding Ilene up of candidates. This guy is playing the odds and he is dead wrong. I believe Trump will win in 2020. It won’t be easy or without a fight, but the American people like what he has done for the country. However, this little pipsqueak is banking on Trump losing. Therefore, he is clinging to language that will enable him to keep his job. He is what is wrong with the Deep State. They desperately cling to their careers and exchange any integrity they have for longevity in their careers. The perks, benefits, and pensions define their loyalty.

Surveillance is when one observes and records. An investigation is when you ask around for information to gather facts.
When you send in a honeypot, under false pretenses to deceptivly gather information, thats spying.
I dont care how crass or nice the words used. The fact remains that the US government infiltrated a political campaign under false pretenses, without cause and attempted to entrap. Ok..... maybe it wasnt "spying". So lets just say that the government used nazi, stalinist tactics. Is that descriptor more palitable?

The only future I see for the FBI is to totally close it down and if any of the former agents and leadership want to work for the new one, they get a lie detector test asking them if they love this country.

#12 may be correct.
And I would add that Barr should have said ´a good and legal reason´ to start the spying instead of saying a ´predicate´ which means the same thing, I think.

Of course you wouldn´t. Because it smacks of all the corruption that is at the heart of your agency. You are swamp Mr. Wray, and you need to go. The fact that you are trying to conceal yet more, possibly actionable, corruption makes it totally obvious.

It´s high time to get the FBI out of the counter-intelligence business completely. They abused it and like a little child they need to be taught a serious lesson by losing that privilege forever.

I have a couple simple questions. What term would you use, Wray? And you say you are "not ´personally´ aware of any evidence pointing to illegal information gathering by law enforcement before the 2016 election." Are you "professionally" aware? Are you aware in any manner that there was unethical or illegal gathering of evidence either before, during, or after the election by any entity including law enforcement or so called intelligence?
